Sotomayor

The early public response to Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is strong. President Obama's choice for the bench is receiving polling numbers comparable to those awarded Chief Justice John Roberts, whose nomination was widely praised. Perhaps more importantly, Sotomayor seems to have avoided the rocky roll-out that plagued the last failed Supreme Court nominee, Harriet Miers.

A Gallup poll released on Thursday showed that Americans feel good about the choice:

Americans' first reactions to the news of President Obama's nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court are decidedly more positive than negative, with 47% rating the nomination as "excellent" or "good," 20% rating it "only fair," and 13% rating it "poor."

Perhaps most remarkably, nine percent of Republicans rated Sotomayor as an "excellent" choice, and 20 percent rated her as good. Combined, that total is one percent point more than those who deemed her "poor," though 24 percent said she was "only fair." For comparison sake, Gallup found that 31 percent of Democrats viewed Chief Justice Roberts as excellent or good when he was nominated.

Meanwhile, a Rasmussen Poll released on Thursday showed that people believe she will be confirmed:

Eighty-seven percent (87%) of voters nationwide believe Judge Sonia Sotomayor will be confirmed as the next U.S. Supreme Court justice. That figure includes 59% who believe her confirmation is Very Likely.

Ultimately, of course, Sotomayor's fate comes down the to perceptions of the 100 (or 99, with the Minnesota contest still unresolved) senators who will vote on her nomination. That said, the public perception of a candidate for the Court has the potential to drastically alter the course of his or her nomination. Clarence Thomas made it to the bench during George H.W. Bush's administration, but only after taking a massive personal and political blow for allegations of sexual harassment and an inadequate legal mind. Miers' appointment, meanwhile, fizzled in large part because she was not held in high opinion among conservative voters.

When Gallup polled Miers' nomination in the days after it was announced, 44 percent of the public said they had an excellent or good immediate reaction. That total was not too far off Sotomayor's 47 percent. However, Miers was viewed as an only fair or poor choice by 41 percent of respondents, far higher than Sotomayor's 33 percent.

The difference, interestingly enough, may have been among woman. Fifty-four percent of female correspondents say they had an excellent or good immediate reaction to Sotomayor's nomination. Only 44 percent of woman had the same feedback to the Miers appointment (39 percent responded in kind to Justice Samuel Alito and 50 percent to Chief Justice Roberts).

Wow. There are a lot of people on here who are really scared of a Puerto Rican woman who thinks her life experience is of value to her judgement.

I thought our society was a little more grown up that this. Did you guys miss the whole civil rights thing in the 60's?

I'm not scared, as a Democrat, that a Puerto Rican woman thinks her life experience is of value to her judgement.
I think it does, just as John F. Kennedy's life experience was of value to his judgement.

That is not the point. The point that you miss is that she made a clearly racist/sexist remark.

That is the point. Stop trying to do a work-around it.

Actually not. I was here in the 60's and am very familiar with it.

Anyone who makes a racist/sexist remark, Republican or Democrat is subject to scrutiny, or at least should be.

This s an Obama Democrat speaking, Not Newt.

for any of the commentators here who don't seem to have a problem with the racist/sexist comment she made, let's just hope things work out well for you and yours in the future. Aracist/sexist by any other name is a racist/sexist, and to give legitimacy to one is to give legitimacy to all.

Remember that for future reference.

Chris Cilliza over on WaPo says that this is a winning issue for Republicans. As usual the mainstream press doesn't have a clue about what average citizens are thinking. While the polls show most approve of Sotomayor, they're busy taking call from Republican spin meisters and reporting what is whispered in their ear as fact.

Go for a plane ride, Chris, and then talk to real people on the street in the highways and byways of this country and then come back and write your report.

I'm still praying there's no tax problem -- I would be banging my head on the table so hard. Lord knows they're digging for anything. The desperate 'racist' and 'empathetic' attacks show an empty hand so far.

What's not to like! She's bright, qualified and brings a unique perspective to the bench to balance it out. I personally admire her because she is disabled and had not let her disability keep her from leading a full and active life.

You might actually try reading her comment in the entire context in which it was written.

Not just in the way that Rush, Beck and Hannity interpret it.

Stop the trolling with LIES. This has been debunked. She never said such things. More was said on that issue with Justice Alito when he was interviewed on his parents being IMMIGRANTS. http://www.dailykostv.com/w/001783/

You dislike her achieving more than you ever could.

Republicans should count their blessings. Democrats are well-positioned to appoint someone to the Supreme Court who really does fit the description they're trying to pin on Sotomayor. "Activist" indeed.

I personally feel that we approach dangerous ground when we worry about the popularity of a Supreme Court Justice. I discount this article as a typical HP sensationalized headline engineered to garner higher readership.
I don't care how poplular a jurist is as long as they understand and follow their role in government. I think this lady will be a good justice but one can only hope and pray.

Racism is racism, and her remark, as "intelligent " as she is, WAS RACIST.
If I, a white male, Democrat, made a similar remark, and stated a WHITE rather
than a BROWN person were invilved, it would be judged racist, and all hell would break loose because a WHITE person said it, rather than a BROWN person.

I retired after spending a life- teaching in an inner city high school located in a 'hood so dangerous that it was nicknamed "the killing Fields."For years, I read autobiographical essays written by my students for their college portfolios, students like Sonia Sotomayor. Neither the white guys in the media, nor the GOP (Greedy Old Privileged white Guys) can understand my day-to-day experiences. Nor can they understand the personal truths my students wrote in their portfolio essays. In the same line, the Grand Old Privileged White guys also have no idea of the life or obstacles that Sonia Sotomayor had to overcome.
As far as I am concerned, when Sotomayor made her famous oft-quoted remark about privileged white guys, never was the truth more told. It's the truth that Privileged White America and the Privileged White GOP can neither face nor understand.
P.S. For what it's worth - I am a white guy.

I'm also a "WHITE GUY."
But unlike you, I am able to recognize a RACIST REMARK when I read one, regardless of your teaching experiences, which have little to do with a RACIST REMARK.
RACISM IS RACISM. PERIOD.

Agree. As an Asian woman, I feel a more diverse Supreme Court would only benefit the country. The bench is pretty monolithic right now.

So then . . . the Republican scandal points have been debunked unless they're also going to go after Scalia and Alito for similar statements. And if they buck Sotomayer, they have to go against not only the Hispanic vote, but also women. How dumb are they? The Republican Senator from Kansas has decided to announce that he's voting against her---------before he asks her even one question. So, the answer to the question, How dumb are they? Pretty dumb.

After the last three nominees, if the person polled has paid attention Sotomayor is a huge breath of fresh air.

Even more me as a devout progressive, I am a bit dubious as I would like an aggressive brass knuckles liberal judge, to go in there and smack alito and scalia around.

But hey, thats why Im not President, and on this count I trust Obama's judgement, he picked a judge with Enormous unprecedented experience and temperament.

Don't forget folks, Obama could have chosen ANYONE he wanted, he could have chosen a far younger, and far liberal nominee, but he didn't, he chose the best.

Very well said and your comments make the point that she is eminently qualified to sere for many years as a great Supreme Court judge. Once again, Obama hs shown his own superior intilect in his pick of Judge Sotomayor as his nominee for the Supreme Court. But I have also heard the racism spouted by some Southern Republicans and some Democrats also. This entire race problem is so much ingrained in the South. Then there are the racists from other areas also that accounts for a lot of the anti Sotomayor rhetoric. As a former Republican who lived a long time in Eastr Texas, this sort of anti Hispanic hysteria sounds like the same old same old that i heard there for years. It explains why I am no longer a Republican after hearing this tripe time after time in precinct meetings. Sad for me to say that eventually Republicans will have no minorities in their party and then they can expect only a regional party. How far they have strayed from the Reagan doctrine of inclusiveness.
