There's a difference between capitalizing on peanuts and capitalizing (and profiteering) from fears and war. Lockheed Martin and others in the military-industrial complex par.asites are nothing but a group of high-tech scammers. They justify for their existence and luxurious lifestyle by first instilling fear among us (scaring to submission), then coerce us (through lobbying the corrupt congress) into coughing out our hard-earn money so they could charge us a ten-thousand-dollar wrench.

The stench in the military-industrial complex is waking up even the de.ad.

We already live in a welfare state for engineers and military contractors. What's different here?

Yep. Isn't this the kind of thing Bush shoulda been doing years ago? But that would have meant no bid cocntracts.

Hello psnyder
Please........expound upon your welfare state for engineers comment. I am a professional engineer (mechanical) and have never heard this comment espoused by anyone until now. Honestly, I am not being confrontational, just curious.

I don't see the problem here really. We live in a capitalist country and a lot of these companies stand to lose a lot of money since a number of old weapons programs are being canceled, so why wouldn't they want to act in their best interest? I'm sure in a few years once marijuana is legal the tobacco companies will make a quick switch.

1941 Victor Fleming version, with Spencer Tracy, Ingrid Bergman and a very young Lana Turner. Cinematography by Joseph Ruttenberg. imdb.com is so handy!

After reading many of the posts on this thread I know most of you don't want to hear this but the cyber-warfare debate is old news, very old news. Concerns were raised about our infrastructure's vulnerability to cyber attack as early as 1995 and in 1998 it was President Clinton who issued a directive that set ambitious infrastructure-protection goals. “I intend that the United States will take all necessary measures to swiftly eliminate any significant vulnerability to both physical and cyber attacks on our critical infrastructures, including especially our cyber-systems,” Clinton wrote. Policy directives such as these over the last 10 years have not transformed into practical reality. The Bush administration largely ignored the potential vulnerabilities until 2007 when the Pentagon began a real effort to counter reportedly aggressive Chinese infiltration efforts. That effort has been expanded and continues as evidenced by this story.

I think I have a problem with this:

"Military experts said Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics, which have long been major players in the Pentagon’s security efforts, are leading the push into offensive cyberwarfare, along with the Raytheon unit. This involves finding vulnerabilities in other countries’ computer systems and developing software tools to exploit them, either to steal sensitive information or disable the networks. "

Now we are endeavoring to exploit other countries' computer systems? WTFis that?

Crazzeee me. I thought we worked TOGETHER with other countries.

Maybe only the ones we like? (for the moment)

The others better watch out because we're aiming to turn their networks into sewage, after we download all their secrets.

Defense is one thing, but this seems offensive.

Three letter agencies, CIA, DIA, FBI, NSA and a bunch of new ones I don't know are on our team. We have been nailed by Chinese (power grid), the Japenese (auto industry, why they bothered, I don't know), and DoD (North Korea and free lancers) so far this year. Of course, the "battles" are just the ones in the press.

Welcome to the new Cold War.
