NEW YORK (AP) - President Barack Obama made good on a campaign promise to his most important supporter Saturday night -- his wife, Michelle.

The president and first lady jetted to a date in New York late Saturday afternoon, aides and media in tow.

"I am taking my wife to New York City because I promised her during the campaign that I would take her to a Broadway show after it was all finished," the president said in a statement an aide read to the press.

After dining a little more than two hours at Blue Hill, a West Village restaurant touted by New York magazine as a "seminal Greenmarket haven" that features food grown by chef and owner Dan Barber on his upstate farm, the president and first lady headed to the Belasco Theater to make curtain call for "Joe Turner's Come and Gone."

The play by August Wilson is about black America in the early 1900s, with residents of a boardinghouse recalling their migration from the sharecropping farms of the South to the industrialized North.

As the motorcade left the West Village and drove up Sixth Avenue to the theater, crowds of people, at times about eight deep, gathered on the sidewalks of the blockaded streets to wave as the Obamas passed. Some cheered. Cab drivers opened their doors and stood on the frames of their taxis to glimpse the president and first lady.

The White House declined to say how much the trip was costing taxpayers, and even before the smaller jet left Washington, the there-and-back trip drew criticism from the Republican National Committee. The RNC issued a news release that chastised Obama for saying he understands American's troubles, but then hopping up to New York for "a night on the town."

Noting that General Motors is expected to file for Chapter 11 protection on Monday, the news release said: "Putting on a show: Obamas wing into the city for an evening out while another iconic American company prepares for bankruptcy."

In an interview before his inauguration, Barack Obama said he and his wife like having "date nights," usually on Fridays. Since moving to Washington, the Obamas have managed to fit in at least a few nights out in the nation's capital.

While on a trip to New York last week, Michelle Obama was reminded about the couple's first date.

"You know, after 20-some-odd years of knowing a guy, you forget that your first date was at a museum," she said. "But it was, and it was obviously wonderful. It worked."

Before traveling to New York, the Obamas watched daughter Malia's soccer game for an hour Saturday morning.

Its wonderful to see President and First Lady Obama out for a lovely summer evening in New York. I think the citizens of New York enjoyed watching the First Couple almost as much as the First Couple enjoyed watching the play.

The President is telling Americans to make sacrifices in this horrible time in our economy. His policies are putting more and more people out of work. This is a slap in the face to all of those people.

Barack values his pre-election commitment to Michelle enough to make good on his word. That's good enough for me.

Barack and Michelle have managed a few date nights in DC, and apparently this is the first long weekend outing. People in America take weekend trips. In fact the tourism industry counts on this. BO and MO are doing nothing out of the ordinary. Do the nay-sayers expect them to not take any weekend trips for the next several years, even a short hop from DC to NYC?

I saw "Joe Turner's Come and Gone" several years ago and must say it is perhaps the best theatrical drama I have ever attended. It's so nice knowing that our presidential couple can appreciate great theater.

As hard as the GOPs try to turn this into something it isn't, they do us a favor by shining a brighter light on the goodness of our current First Family.

Their previous J. Crew low profile image strategy was much smarter.

President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are the sweetest couple to ever occupy the White House. They are the emblem of the American Dream and a great role model for couples all across the United States and the world. I am so proud of them. It's so refreshing to have them in the White House.

MO and BO are wanting to be a king and queen. Well, we are hurting out here and reading about your date makes me really dislike you. Feel our pain but I don't think it is in you. Not to be unkind but it is talked about......MO you are not an attractive woman not because of physical looks but your personality. I hated then and more now your "I'm now proud of America" statement. Your DH thinks the same thing. Shame on you.

You sound frustratated. I grew up black and poor, but recognized early on that resentment of the more fortunate, black or white, was fruitless. One must strive to make the best of his or her own life instead of making comparisons with other people, which is always doomed to be a losing proposition.

Michelle looks lovely! Lucky lady. Her husband is so handsome. They make a great couple. I love how our president considers taking his wife out a priority. May they have many more romantic dates.

Please treat the President and his family with respect by allowing them privacy from photographs. The Founding Fathers didn't have such flashing intrusion in mind when they gave the 4th Estate freedom to speech. I can see why you all photographed Bush so much-- even he welcomed having his picture taken-- because it proved that any species of primate could get to the Presidency if you have computerized voting made by pro-Bush companies. But Obama is a private man and functions best when given his space. If you want him to be as "good" as Bush, keep blinding him with your damned strobe lights. But Obama can't function blinded because, unlike Bush, he reads.

I will say this, I am sure that many here will be glad to return the sentiments when a GOP takes the whitehosue again.

If it happens to be someone young and they take their wife out, well then all of you shouldnt feel so terrible if he spends $250,000 either.

Cant have it both ways

If this fantasy GOP president of the future of yours is tackling as many problems as this current president - then, sure, s/he can take his husband/wife and enjoy an evening out. If s/he's building up the world, rather than destroying it (like the last GOP president), then sure, have at it. If s/he's got a good heart, good mind, and good intentions - I'm sure the line will be long to applaud his/her motorcade...

Unfortunately, history shows that this fantasy is unlikely to become a reality. Sorry...

You know what I'm pissed about... the former President that got us into a war, not knowing a thing about it except.. Sadam bad, must kill him... then off to play golf... o i remember vividly because a friend of mine was killed the day he spoke on TV about nothing then off to play golf...

But President Obama.. i have no beef with him... having a night out with your family after a long week of fixing other people's crap and mistakes.. he deserves it

How can they have a date with everyone watching, taking pictures, gawking, admiring, and on and on? Doesn't seem very cozy to me.

George Bush took 77 trips to Crawford, for a total of 490 days spent out there, and cost of the flights alone was 226,072 dollars a flight. That's 17,407,544 for him. NYC is closer. This president works harder than he did, and costs less.
