AP: LONDON - She dreamed a dream, and it very nearly came true.

But Susan Boyle 's reality show journey finished Saturday with a second-place finish in the finals of "Britain's Got Talent," an ending that didn't fit the fairy tale. Instead of the 48-year-old internet sensation, an exuberant dance troupe called "Diversity" took the 100,000-pound ($159,000) prize and will perform for Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Variety Show.

Boyle paced around the stage as the hosts named the top three of the ten final acts, and looked almost relieved when her name was called as the runner-up. She recovered in time to graciously praise the dancers.

"The best people won," Boyle said. "They're very entertaining. Lads, I wish you all the best."

Boyle then curtsied several times to the audience, gave them her signature shimmy, and strolled offstage.

WATCH THE FINAL PERFORMANCE:

It had been a tumultuous week for Boyle, a woman previously unused to the limelight. She lost her cool during a confrontation with two reporters, and the police intervened. One contest judge said Boyle had contemplated pulling out of the competition to soothe her frazzled nerves

But when she stepped into the spotlight Saturday, Boyle seemed more polished -- and animated -- than in previous appearances.

She wore a modest, but glamorous, floor-length gown, and chose to go back to the song that rocketed her into the international spotlight: "I Dreamed a Dream," from the musical "Les Miserables."

Her hometown of Blackburn, Scotland -- a small, working class village about 10 miles (16 kilometers) west of Edinburgh -- rallied round her, stringing up posters and signs in her support. Friends and neighbors gathered at a local pub to watch the performance.

"I've known her for many years," said 72-year-old neighbor Margaret Yule. "She's a lovely lassie and she will do well whatever happens. Susan is about the singing, and fame and fortune won't change her."

Millions tuned in to the live program and voted by telephone afterward.

Boyle was up against a host of everyman acts determined to find stardom on reality television, including Shaheen Jafargholi, a 12-year-old whose voice has been compared to Michael Jackson's, Hollie Steel, a 10-year-old who turned in a solid performance after a tearful semifinal meltdown, and a grandfather-grandaughter singing duo.

And then there was "Stavros Flatley," a father-son act who parodied "The Lord of the Dance" by romping around the stage shirtless, in blond wigs and leather pants, combining Greek and Irish dancing and music.

But it was Boyle whom people tuned in to watch.

After her first appearance in April, Boyle became the favorite to win the competition. As she stepped on stage during auditions, her frumpy appearance drew condescending looks from the studio audience and the judges, but her soaring, evocative voice silenced the doubters and turned her into an Internet sensation.

The first moment Boyle sang was one that has been viewed millions of times, the fifth-most watched clip in history on YouTube. It was a moment that went down in reality-show history.

As Boyle hit a high note at the end of the song's first line, judge Simon Cowell's eyebrows rose along with her voice. The audience went mad. And a star was born.

She has since appeared on the "Oprah Winfrey Show." Demi Moore tweeted about Boyle on her Twitter feed. Boyle dominated Britain's tabloids -- but there were signs she was feeling the heat.

She acknowledged Saturday that it had been a stressful few weeks, but said onstage that it had been "well worth it."

Cowell said that she'd been given a rough ride, but that she was "a nice, shy person who wants a break."

New news regarding the winners, Diversity

DIVERSITY has already landed its first gig - at a show with rap superstar Kanye West.

The BGT champs have been booked to perform at the Wireless Festival at London's Hyde Park on July 5, just days after winning the show.

The confirmation of the Kanye concert comes hours after it was alleged that Michael Jackson wants to book the boys for his tour.

Dance troupe Diversity, winners of TV's Britain's Got Talent, are to appear in a new British film to be shot in 3D.

Fellow competitors Flawless will also appear in the film, as will last year's winner George Sampson.

The film, Street Dance, follows a dance crew in training for the Street Dance Championships who are forced to work alongside ballet dancers.

Distributed by Vertigo Films, it has been described as "the first British movie to be shot in 3D".

Producer James Richardson signed both Diversity and Flawless to the film after seeing them perform last July at the UK Street Dance Championships.

Fascinating to see how much passionate interest Susan Boyle's story has stirred up, both by fervent fans and by detractors. The truth must lie somewhere in the middle. Miss Boyle is neither an angel sent from heaven, nor an overblown karaoke singer whose 15 minutes are up. She is a gifted woman with much to offer, and much to overcome.

I was powerfully touched by her original BGT performance, because despite being rough around the edges and not technically perfect, her voice carried a natural emotional power that cut right through all the noise and connected directly to my own emotional core. Very few singers, no matter how professional and successful, have this ability. It has nothing to do with technique or polish, and it is a precious gift when it happens. Her recording of "Cry Me a River" is just as powerful.

What has happened on BGT and since is tragic and painful, but it doesn't negate the truly special talent that Miss Boyle is blessed with. Despite the justified critiques of her semi-final performance, and the less justified critiques of her final performance (which while stiff physically was vocally quite beautiful and expressive), that quality still managed to come through, even if compromised somewhat by her emotional condition.

We have been blessed to hear her, and will only be further blessed by any anything she has the opportunity to produce in the future. I wish her the best, and truly hope things will work out for her.

i do not consider her a great singer. timbre is not great, and there are some small pitch issues that all-pro's don't share. people are falling in love with the fantasy or rags to riches.

WTF everyone saying sorry she lost for? She didn't lose and hey megerber, I truly doubt your mom sings better than Susan, pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee take your sh** elsewhere trying be different whatever! Susan has a greater future than that dance team what's their faces. Their just another dance team but Susan is unique in every way and will be THE most humble singer star on the planet. I know she will not change because of fame or money and trust me, she will make more than that dance people what's their name will ever see in their lifetime. She already has recording companies lining up waiting for her in the states here. Thier just being patient to see when she can arrive and let everyone hear her beautiful heavenly voice again. I will line up at 3am if I must to get my hand on that first CD, screw downloads and freeloading off the net- I want a real CD from Susan Boyle and hope one day to meet her and have her sign it for me :) God bless that woman!!!!

I was blown away by Diversity. They were absolutely WONDERFUL and I loved their performance.

I feel so very badly for Susan because she looked so frightful just before the announcement of the winner. You could see her desperation in her eyes. I wish her all the best in her upcoming career and truly hope she gets the help she needs to overcome this sad outcome for her since she was lifted by all the elements of the MONEY to believe she was going to win. How tragic was that!

This lady has a great voice, she would do great on Broadway!

No, I don't think she could do "Broadway". I don't think she's that "great".

You want to hear "great" voices?

Listen to Anne Buckley, singing "Carrickfergus"
Listen to Sarah Brightman, singing "La Califfa"
Listen to Ewa Malas-Godlweska (in her duet with Jose Cura) singing "EmOcean"
Listen to Barbra, singing "Evergreen"
Listen to Celine, siging "To Love You More"
Listen to Jade Laura d'Angelis, singing "Bellezza Divina"
Listen to Emma Shapplin, singing "La Notte Etterna"

The list goes on....Susan Boyle has a "voice", but not a "great" voice (yet).

Like usual with the "entertainment" press--they give you hugs & kudos, then start looking for the weak spot. Stop with the stories about her meltdown & let her have a breather. She has a great talent & I hope she does a Christmas album, I'd buy it.

I have to be the only person on the planet that was not that impressed with her. She had a lovely voice, but I know a lot of people with a voice just as lovely or better. My mother sang better on Saturday mornings cleaning the house while singing Habanero to us.

I swear I believe most of this was the world being in awe that an unfortunate looking woman was brave enough to be on stage and had talant instead of hiding away.

Shocker. Ugly people have talant as well.

Agreed. It's kinda like the popular girl at school hanging out with the ugly kid. Look at how generous the public can be. We can like ugly people.

It was my distinct pleasure to listen to Susan Boyle's beautiful voice. She is a real lady
and she has touched my heart with her awesome music. Susan Boyle, your beautiful
voice will live in my heart forever. I sincerely hope after you have some rest and recover
from the ordeal of the pressure you have been under, you will emerge the star that you are.
Never give up on your dream. You are a sensation and you should be very proud. Good
things are coming your way. I am sure of it.

It never occurred to me that anyone would repeat the same song that they had sung before on the show, especially since they only get to sing three during audition, semi and final! And there's so much echo in the mike during the semi and the final that I don't really think I'm getting to really hear the voice. Her audition performance really blew the roof off, one of the best stage performances ever, even though we all knew that it was basically karaoke, and there wasn't all that excessive echo. Everything about her was just great. Unfortunately, she has had two more opportunities on BGT to demonstrate that she can interpret a song that goes well beyond schlocky British musicals. But... she didn't. Perhaps she will in the future, and she'll get some training and some good advice. But her semi and final performances were just not good. Shockingly bad song choices, over-produced stage performances and weak singing that did nothing to match her audition.
