George Tiller Killed: Abortion Doctor Shot At Church

Tillera

AP/Huffington Post   First Posted: 7/1/09 Updated: 5/25/11

***UPDATE*** US Attorney General Eric Holder is dispatching US Marshals to protect abortion clinic and doctors around the country.

Holder issued the following statement:

The murder of Doctor George Tiller is an abhorrent act of violence, and his family is in our thoughts and prayers at this tragic moment. Federal law enforcement is coordinating with local law enforcement officials in Kansas on the investigation of this crime, and I have directed the United States Marshals Service to offer protection to other appropriate people and facilities around the nation. The Department of Justice will work to bring the perpetrator of this crime to justice. As a precautionary measure, we will also take appropriate steps to help prevent any related acts of violence from occurring.

***UPDATE*** Tiller's wife Jeanne, his four children and ten grandchildren issued the following statement

"Today we mourn the loss of our husband, father and grandfather. Today's event is an unspeakable tragedy for all of us and for George's friends and patients. This is particularly heart wrenching because George was shot down in his house of worship, a place of peace.

We would like to express the family's thanks for the many messages of sympathy from our friends and from all across the nation. We also want to thank the law enforcement officers who are investigating this crime.

Our loss is also a loss for the City of Wichita and women across America. George dedicated his life to providing women with high-quality heath care despite frequent threats and violence. We ask that he be remembered as a good husband, father and grandfather and a dedicated servant on behalf of the rights of women everywhere."

***UPDATE*** KSHB-TV is reporting that the suspect arrested as a "person of interest" in the murder of Dr. George Tiller is named Scott Roeder.

Johnson County Sheriff's deputies stopped Scott Roeder on I-35 between the two main Gardner exits around 1:30 p.m. He surrendered without incident. Deputies did not find any weapons on him...

According to Phannestiel, Roeder is on temporary hold for Sedgwick County at the Johnson County New Century Detention Center near Gardner. Roeder is considered a person of interest at this time

***UPDATE*** President Obama issued the following statement about Dr. George Tiller's murder:

"I am shocked and outraged by the murder of Dr. George Tiller as he attended church services this morning. However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence."

***UPDATE*** At an afternoon news conference, Wichita Police confirmed that a suspect, a 51-year-old man, had been arrested for the murder of Dr. George Tiller, reports KSN-3 News:

The suspect is currently facing one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault for threatening onlookers who tried to intervene.

Several witnesses to the shooting attempted to intervene and chase down Tiller's killer, but he was able to flee in his blue Ford Taurus with Kansas license plate 225 BAB. Several hours later, the suspect was arrested near Gardner, Kansas on Interstate 35, reports the Kansas City Star.

***UPDATE*** The AP reports that a suspect is in custody:

A Wichita city official says a suspect is in custody in the shooting death of late-term abortion provider George Tiller.

The city official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the case. The official did not provide additional details.

An attorney for Tiller, Dan Monnat, says the doctor was shot Sunday as he served as an usher during morning services at Reformation Lutheran Church. Monnat said Tiller's wife, Jeanne, was in the choir at the time of the shooting.

WICHITA, Kansas -- Dr. George Tiller, a Kansas doctor whose clinic received national attention for performing late-term abortions, was shot to death as he entered his Wichita church on Sunday.

"Members of the congregation who were inside the sanctuary at the time of the shooting were being kept inside the church by police," the Wichita Eagle reported, "and those arriving were being ushered into the parking lot."

Media reports said the suspected killer fled the scene in a blue Taurus. Police described him as a white male in his 50s or 60s.

Tiller has been among the few U.S. physicians performing late-term abortion, making him a favored target of anti-abortion protesters. He testified that he and his family have suffered years of harassment and threats. His clinic was the site of the 1991 "Summer of Mercy" protests marked by mass demonstrations and arrests. His clinic was bombed in 1985, and an abortion opponent shot him in both arms in 1993.

Tiller's clinic also provided group and individual counseling, as well as chaplain and funeral services for people who were grieving.

The anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, which runs a "Tiller Watch" feature on its website, released a statement condemning the shooting. "We are shocked at this morning's disturbing news that Mr. Tiller was gunned down. Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning. We pray for Mr. Tiller's family that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ."

Tiller remained prominent in the news in recent years, in part because of an investigation begun by former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline, an abortion opponent.

Prosecutors had alleged that Tiller had gotten second opinions from a doctor who was essentially an employee of his, not independent as state law requires, but a jury in March acquitted him of all 19 misdemeanor counts against him.

Abortion opponents also questioned then-Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' ties to Tiller before the Senate confirmed her this year as U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary. Tiller donated thousands of dollars to Sebelius over the years.

Dr. Tiller's murder will lead to the deaths of mothers who find out late in their gestation that their lives or health are at risk. Almost no woman is going to chose a 3rd trimester abortion, unless it is to save her own life or protect her own health. Very, very few women have late term abortions as a means of contraception. Now where are these imperiled women to go?

I probably should have emphasized that these late abortion situations usually involve a nonviable fetus or one with a serious genetic disease. In a situations where the mother alone is endangered by delivering the child naturally, the child and mother can often be saved by Cesarean section delivery. My point is that most late term abortions are not elective, they are medical necessities. There are always exceptions of course, but they are rare.

I have absolutely no respect for so called evangelicals who think they can terrorize people into submitting to their cultish way of thinking. If abortion is legal, it should be rtespected like any other surgery. Who are they to say what is right or wrong and dont we have a choice in that matter? If christians think people go to hell for having an abortion, fine let them make that choice, its their problem, they have to right to take that risk, especially if its legal and its probably necessary for them to make such a choice. Not everybody agrees that its murder! Other wise God is also a murderer since he causes many miscarriages to happen, n most likely because the fetus is defective and its best it does not survive. Nowhere does it say abortion is a sin or murder in the bible, this is all man made assumptions.I doubt any woman has an abortion if she didnt feel it was the right thing to do. Since she has to care for that child for many years she should be able to make that decision without being harassed by a bunch of losers! that thhave nothing better to do than intrude in other peoples private business. You guys need to learn to LIve and let live, and not behave like a bunch of talibans!

Anyone ignorant enough to try and place the blame for Dr. Tillers murder on Bill O'Reilly or any other media loudmouth need only look at the lack of outcry for media accountability with regard to William Longs murder as an illustration of the hypocrisy of this issue. I would argue that those who choose to use either of these heinous acts as tools to promote a particular political agenda are being intellectually dishonest. The fact is, the only people who are to blame for these acts are the nutcases that committed the murders.

When we find ourselves trying to blame people who exercise their first amendment rights for the acts of others, we find ourselves on a slippery slope that leads to only one place, the loss of our fundamental rights as Americans. It really doesn't matter the size of a persons "megaphone", we all have the right to speak our mind in this country, Bill O'Reilly included.
10:16 PM on 06/07/2009
Please point out anyone in the media who specifically mentioned Private Long's name (even once, as opposed to O'Reilly's constant bombardment of Tiller). Please show me one person who called Mr. Long (by name) was a "Na.zi" or any of the other outrageous statements O'Reilly made about Tiller. Please show me anyone who claimed that Mr. Long (by name) would exe.cute someone for money. Please show me ANYONE who said anything in public about Private Long (by name).

This is not about general criticism of a position or even a profession. O'Reilly and others specifically engaged in untruthful defamation and libeI about Tiller. They claimed (without question) that he was performing illegal acts. Some of these people repeated those claims even after Tiller was acquitted of all charges. They called Tiller (by name) a mur.derer and far worse. They Iied repeatedly about the number of abortions he performed, the reasons for which he would perform them, and anything else that they thought would support their position. They are just as responsible as that man who pulled the trigger.

I have been a reproductive rights advocate for more than 30 years. I have traveled all over the country to oppose Operation Rescue and to provide clinic defense. I have worked closely with the doctors, staff and patients at facilities all over the country. I have met and observed hundreds of anti-choice activists. The vast majority of them are seriously mentally ill.

My heart goes out to Dr. Tiller's family, friends and patients.

Could you define "seriously mentally ill" and give specific examples of how it applies to Operation Rescue?

thank you, its nice to hear some rational caring intelligent human being , who understands the malice and insanity of these, so called, pro lifers!
I think O' Reilly crossed the line of free speech!...because hateful speech that instigates violence towards others should NOT be allowed. If the terrorism was aimed at them, they would be up in arms about it! but its ok for them to do it becuse they are" self righteous" insane people.

Fetuses are not even people yet and have no feelings or thoughts, and if they are defective , its best they are not born, or if they are unwanted, Some of the women had dead fetuses inside of them that had to be removed or the mother will die poisoned by it...and if nobody wants to do the surgery for fear of you people killing them,,,how helpful is that?
These pro-lifers are no better than Talibans, forcing people to abide by their erroneous beliefs by imposing terrorism. Why not adopt some of the many orphans, and retarded or deformed childrenor foster children already in this world, if you care so much about unwanted babies ! And do it with your own passion and money! Now its the government who bares the burden with our tax moneys.

Orielly didn't pull the trigger, but he planted the though and Roeder carried it out. See below.
The confrontation on the steps
I was on assignment in the Midwest at the time, so Bill told me to travel to Topeka, Kansas and confront Tiller's attorney about the controversy involving his client's abortion clinic.

The crew and I arrived at Pedro Irigonegary's office on the afternoon of November 7th. He happened to be outside just as our van pulled in... and we sprang out with the cameras rolling.

"Do you believe that late-term babies should be terminated in the womb for 'depression'?" I asked after introducing myself.

"Look," he said, staring down at me from atop a flight of stairs. "What's important in this issue is not whether Mr. O'Reilly thinks that he is an expert on depression or not. What's important is what medical people and a woman going through a difficult process decided what's her best interest. I don't care what Mr. O'Reilly thinks."

"That's the kind of junk journalism that I see from O'Reilly on a daily basis!" he argued. I told him that O'Reilly wasn't the issue and he responded, "You're talking about something to get ratings, that's all you're doing!"

I"You and Mr. O'Reilly and the entire Fox network are not the individuals who should be make determinations of what is or what is not a legal abortion."

And mr. Tiller was absolutely correct! He cared about women and tried to help them with a very personal and difficult decision /problem. He should not have been made to suffer harrassments and intimidation and death threats from a crowd of lunatics. Shame on Fox news for following their lead and pretending to care .....many of you probably would not blink and eye about having an abortion yourselves if it were convenient, so why the hippocracy? Just for ratings for your lovely hateful
audience, right?

"Tonight at 9:00 PM, "The Hal Turner Show" will talk about the recent killing of an abortionist and what the shooter did wrong. No, not the shooting itself; but rather what he did wrong that got him caught!

We'll talk at length about how to carry out such an act and significantly reduce the chances of getting caught.

Lets face it; America is in big trouble and only force and violence are going to clean it up. Tonight, we'll talk about how to use force and violence and not get caught."

I love this comment from Operation Rescue: "Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice." How can you bring someone to justice who is not breaking the law? Tiller did nothing illegal. The people associated with Operation Rescue and other anti-abortion groups that vandalized and attacked him and his place of business were the ones breaking federal laws. Has anyone been watching Rachel Maddow this week? Her coverage of this has been impressive. I feel like the feds need to step up and defend the laws in place and seriously prosecute the people that break them. Maybe if they had been harder on Tiller's killer earlier on, when they had the chance, this could have been avoided.

Not all laws are just; just because there's a law doesn't make it moral.

Maybe you think its not moral, but not everyone is forced to accept your views.Thats why we have laws, and if its legal , you have no right to interfere with people rights to have a legal proceedure, that they find is acceptable and necessary for them. Who are you to be their judge?
I find it prefectly moral and I am glad it is legal so people dont have to use coat hangers or seek charlatains and bleed to death doing what can be done safely by doctors .I honor these courageous wonderful heroes who ,shoud not have to risk their lives to do their job to help women who need or want an abortion.
I dont like hunting, i dont think its necessary, yet because its legal I cannot interfere or stop people from hunting even though I strongly disagree with them. I dont go out and kill hunters either!

Bill O'Reilly might as well have pulled the trigger on the gun that killed Tiller...at least this the thought of some journalists weighing in on the abortion doctor's death. In this Newsy report, it's interesting how journalists have taken sides in the debate over who is ultimately responsible for Dr. Tiller's death.

That is a ludicrous statement. If that is their logic then Code Pink might as well have pulled the trigger in the shooting death of Mr Long. Funny how that story doesn't get a mention from the MSM. Furthermore, whether or not Dr Tiller was breaking the law is debatable. He was being investigated for failing to report statutory rape on several occasion performing late term abortions on girls as young as 11. Also, late term abortions are only permitted in circumstances where the life of the mother is in danger and this would have to be verified by 2 independent physicians. Dr Tiller had someone on his payroll who would cosign the abortion orders willy nilly. He would perform abortions claiming that things as minor as "headaches" were a threat to the mother's life. So actually, Dr Tiller, in all likelihood broke several Federal Laws. His murder was despicable, but he was not a saint either.

All you anti-abortion folks (I can't call you pro-life because you believe in war and capital punishment) why don't you take your anger and angst and go after pedophile priests? This would be a great topic for Bill O’Reilly, Catholic, to rile about. How about worrying about kids once they are born?

Instead of accusing all of us of being pro-war and pro-death penalty, you might want to ask our opinions on those matters FIRST.

I am pro-life: against abortion, against unjust war and against the death penalty.
