Afghan Member Of Parliament Rips U.S. For Killing Civilians

Afghanistan

Predator drone attacks that continue to kill civilians are undermining the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan, a member of that country's parliament charged Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

Controversy has swirled around unmanned aerial attacks that have killed civilians in Pakistan and the border region, but Dr. Roshnak Wardak, an Afghani member of parliament who has lived in both countries, says that the attacks inside Afghanistan have been devastating to U.S. credibility.

Wardak herself was almost killed by one. About six months ago, she said, a drone bombed a road about 200 meters from her home in the rural province she represents. The first drone, she says, killed Taliban members attempting to mine the road.

The blast, she says, lifted her house off the ground and woke up the village. The curious went to see what happened. That's when the second drone struck, killing roughly 15 civilians, she says.

"Of course, people became very much nervous. Everybody came to me, [saying] that 'You're our representative. What's this? Why they did this?'" says Wardak.

If the answer to terrorism, said Wardak, is to bomb the place where there is terrorist activity, then the United States might as well have bombed New York City.

"All over the world, there is rule and regulation for all operations. I will give you an example of New York. There were some terrorists and they did this attack on the trade centers and other places. Why American country--why police and why military--they didn't bombard New York?"

Wardak said that she took her constituents' complaints to parliament, as members always do after a U.S. bombing in their area. It's rare that she can get a meeting with the U.S. ambassador, she explains.

"We became tired from these attacks. Every day there is discussion in the parliament," she says. "I'm against this kind of operation, very much against."

The bombings are costing the United States the support of the civilian population, said Wardak, an independent not affiliated with a party who described herself as a moderate. "Every time this bombardment happens by drone, tomorrow we discuss this matter in the parliament. And I'm so sorry that when we discuss this matter, American country and their leadership, their soldiers, they are losing their popularity among the M.P.s and also among, especially, the people. Very much they are losing their popularity," she says.

Brave New Foundation, as part of its Rethink Afghanistan campaign, brought Wardak to Washington, D.C. for the progressive conference "America's Future Now!" The Huffington Post interviewed her at the Omni Shoreham, where the conference is ongoing. Later on Tuesday, she briefed members of Congress on the situation on the ground in her country.

Wardak is the only doctor in the province.

A May bombing in Farah province, says Wardak, killed 143 people; 96 were women and children under 18.

"The people, they collect and they go and they take these dead bodies to the governor house. And they show--see this is boy or girl, this is woman, this is a small child," she says.

"We are sorry now," Wardak says the U.S. told the grieving families. "Our friends, they're not much sensitive about this issue. They say, 'They are Taliban, and we do not have another way to eliminate Taliban. This is what we can do.' And they give two thousand dollars for each dead body and one thousand for each injured person."

I'm not going to get into one of those "we're right, you're wrong" arguments because it has absolutely nothing to do with the outcome of any war. What I'm saying is if any nation chooses to fight a war, the idea that civilians aren't going to suffer either by getting caught in crossfire, becoming refuges, or being directly targeted is completely unrealistic. In fact the past century has shown their casualties are usually equal or higher than those of the people doing the actual fighting. The only thing we can do about it is not go to war. We need to hold a new Geneva Convention to make rules based on the realities of modern warfare. Why no one thinks that this is one of the main problems we face is beyond me.

Obama thinks a 'surge' will change the tide in Afg/Pak. It will not. Just bring ALL the troops home.

Commander in chief Obama could bring ALL our troops home with the stroke of a pen. Just do it O.

Would we shrug off a country who placed a bomb on an airplane to kill a target, destroying 150 other passengers at the same time.?
Absolutely not!
we would label that country a terrorist country and act accordingly .

Yet that is exactly what the U.S is doing when they feel killing civilians is acceptable in order to perform an assasination via drones.
These killings make a mockery of the saying a person is innocent until proven guilty. We are killing people merely because of their temporary location and saying they have no human value, their are merely "collateral damage" to our objective.

You are absolutely right.

Maybe some of the drones are dropping too much arsenal for a strategic hit.

Lest we forget, the Taliban kill men, women and little children as deliberate policy, as and when!

How seldom they speak out about this when it happens!

Innocent civilians can never be safe when the terrorist is in their midst, sadly tragedy happens!

The 'ole, "but we're still not as bad as the crazies defense," honestly?

I do not want to seem cruel, but this rep seems stupid.

"The first drone, she says, killed Taliban members attempting to mine the road.

The blast, she says, lifted her house off the ground and woke up the village. The curious went to see what happened. That's when the second drone struck, killing roughly 15 civilians, she says.

"Of course, people became very much nervous. Everybody came to me, [saying] that 'You're our representative. What's this? Why they did this?'"

Well, when the first blast came, why did people run out to see? They put themselves in harms way.

Why did they do this? She answers her own question but failed to give that answer to her own people: The first drone, she says, killed Taliban members attempting to mine the road.

Don't blame the Taliban for mining the road. Blame the US for preventing them from doing so. Sound illogical, to me.

"Well, when the first blast came, why did people run out to see?"

Ummm to check on their neighbors, to see if anyone was injured and needed help?

I'm in no way trying to sound cruel, but how can civilian casualties be avoided in war? The idea that just the "bad guys" are going to get hurt seems completely unrealistic?

I don't remember Afghanistan declaring war on us or us on them.

Who's the terrorist here?
12:40 PM on 06/03/2009
Who's "declared" war on anyone in the past 50 years? After the first atomic bomb fell the traditional rules of war were instantly outdated. I'm not asking who is a "terrorist." Trying to claim moral superiority in a war is insane to me anyway. What I was alluding was no matter what you do civilians are going to suffer in war. That's why I find the whole "winning hearts and minds" strategy we continue to use naive. How often has it EVER worked? "Oh, sorry I blew up your house. But here's a two-way radio and a carton of cigs." Yeah, I'm sure that REALLY works.
12:33 AM on 06/03/2009
Let's see, a Predator drone kills a bunch of Taliban mining the road then a bunch of civilians come out to see what's going on and subsequently get killed when another drone drops a bomb? Doesn't anyone see the foolishness of these acts? If the Taliban are around stay the frak away if you can!

Why isn't the Afghanistan army fighting off the T@liban like the Pakistan ...... Not that i condone Predator drone attacks that are ki-ll-ing civilians under Obama's Leadership ... but the US will not have to continue doing this ... if the Afghanistan army steps up & invade the T@liban hiding places & drive the out .. like Pakistan is doing ...
12:16 PM on 06/03/2009
Thank you for pointing out that these attacks are killing civilians under Obama's Leadership - a Fact nobody seems to want to talk about
