(The Associated Press) Conan O'Brien debuted as host of "The Tonight Show" Monday with a "run" across the country to Los Angeles and some other comedy bits emphasizing his entry into a strange new culture.

He joined a line of predecessors Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson and Jay Leno on television's most historic late-night franchise.

"I think I've timed this move perfectly," he said in his opening monologue. "I'm on a last-place network, I moved to a state that's bankrupt and 'The Tonight Show' is sponsored by General Motors."

Watch the opening to the show, which features Conan running, swimming and bulldozing his way from New York City across the country to Los Angeles:

O'Brien spent 17 years as host of NBC's "Late Night" in New York, and the move up one hour has been in the works for five years. Leno, his immediate predecessor, will do a weeknight prime-time show on NBC. The workaholic Leno will start "in two days, three days tops," O'Brien joked. Actually, it's in September.

O'Brien christened a new studio on the Universal City lot with a handsome art deco look. The stage has a blue glass background for the opening monologue, before O'Brien retreats to a desk in front of a sparkling backdrop of Los Angeles.

From the top, O'Brien showed the silly comic style that sets him apart from Leno, with more comedy skits filmed earlier and less reliance on jokes in front of the studio audience. The first one showed O'Brien marking off a to-do list with "move to L.A." left undone, as a camera panned a New York skyline outside his window.

A frantic O'Brien goes out in the street to find a cab. When he couldn't, he begins running. He runs out of New York, and the camera catches him sprinting in various spots across the country _ across Wrigley Field in Chicago, past the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, by the Rockies and through the desert to Las Vegas. Finally he arrives at the locked door to his new studio, only to realize he'd left his keys behind.

In other segments, O'Brien commandeers a tram filled with tourists on a Universal Studios lot tour and takes his used green Taurus for a ride into the car-obsessed culture. Fabio compliments him on his ride.

O'Brien was clearly nervous at the long-awaited opening night, pacing onstage during his monologue and mugging with his red pompadour.

"I remember watching Johnny Carson when I was a kid and thinking: That's what I want to be when I grow up," O'Brien said. "I'm sure right now in America there is likely a kid watching me, thinking: 'What is wrong with that man's hair?'"

Longtime sidekick Andy Richter slid smoothly into the role Ed McMahon once played for Carson, standing at a podium to the side of the stage and loudly laughing at his boss' jokes.

Over at CBS, David Letterman slyly made mention of NBC's transition.

"I'm still here," he said. "I knocked off another competitor."

He said he got a call from his mom and she said, "Well, David, I see you didn't get 'The Tonight Show' again," a reference to Letterman losing out to Leno to become Carson's successor.

Comic Will Ferrell was O'Brien's first guest, his appearance less manic than some of his memorable "Late Night" visits. He offered O'Brien some "tips" for L.A. living, including a good burger joint in Pasadena "called Burger King."

Pearl Jam was the musical guest, debuting a song off an upcoming album.

Ferrell sang his own song in tribute to O'Brien, a version of "Never Can Say Goodbye" that "bewildered" the host. Why sing a goodbye song on the first night?

"Don't get me wrong," Ferrell said. "I'm pulling for you. But this little thing is a crapshoot at best."

I thought Conan's debut on the Tonight Show was the best late-night talk show I've seen in quite a while. I wasn't expecting it to be so good. Conan has great potential if he keeps it up and doesn't get stale.

Craig Ferguson is tops! But, as he reminds us, he is "European" in origin. Great to see some bawdy, intelligent wit on our TV.

Look at it this way: if the average host of this show stays at the job for 15-20 years, it wouldn't make any sense to pick an older host that would pander to an older audience that is mostly going to be deceased in another 15-20 years. its a smart move to pick someone who younger generations enjoy watching because like it or not, WE are the future, WE are the ones who are going to be around for the next 20+ years, not the people reminiscing about Jack Paar and Johnny Carson..

UNIMAGINATIVE IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT ON CONAN'S DEBUT AND LIKELY NIGHTLY SHOW, NBC MADE A POOR CHOICE FOR THE MASS VIEWERS OVER 35 !!!! KIDS STUFF IS WHAT IT IS, HE IS A GOOD BEHIND THE SCENES WRITER, HE'S AN EASTERNER AND IT SHOWS IN SUNNY LA !!! THE SHOW SHOULD BE IN NYC WHERE IT BEGAN ,,,,NBC HAS SLID MUCH SINCE PEOPLE LIKE JACK PAAR, BOB HOPE, COSBY, CARSON, AND OTHERS HAD TOP SHOWS ON THE PEACOCK NETWORK... NEVER CARED MUCH FOR LOUD BLABBER AND POOR QUESTIONER LENO.....LETTERMAN AND CRAIG FERGUSON WILL WIN BIG FOR NOW....

Hair to compete with Kate!!! What's with that hair...and why do comedians leave 'it'/him alone? Who on earth would be seen with that 'doo'! Does he have no sense of self-image?

Guess you can surmise, I've never 'gotten' Conan. Watched very early on b/c his family lived where I did at one time and I was curious I suppose. Can't help but think he has some backing which continues. His first shows were pathetic and really, I don't see the talent now. There are sooo many already talented people available who would not need about 10 yrs of apprenticeship and tolerance. What's with him?

I'm just sayin'....no one cares

Gese, what a bunch of old fuddy-duddies around here. Hear what happened to Leno at NBC's "in-fronts"? People were filing out of the room before he was done, he was so boring.

Conan is the future, people. And he is magnificent.

Jay is done. His "primetime" return is desperation on NBC's part.

I can appreciate if Conan were an amateur or a "first timer", but after watching the first 25 minutes I could take no more. Infrequently I will watch for a moment the historic show's demise.

I can't stand to look at him. That nervous lip licking habit gives me the willies.

Back around 1994, I saw him standing in the lobby of a movie theater in Union Square in NYC. He gave off "Look at me, look at me" vibes and at the same time was acting incredibly self-conscious.

Can't stand his voice, his looks, his shtick or anything else about him.

For me, there's something forced and self-conscious about Conan's comedy bits. His Simpsons track record proves he's a great comedy writer, but somehow his anxious delivery always made me feel uncomfortable. Like watching Todd, the kid who worked on his muscle car all day, attempt to negotiate his way through a mandatory speech class.

Conan does great bits, as his roots come from writing for the Simpsons and SNL, but he just annoys me because he tries to be goofy funny all the time. I just want to yell at the screen when he does his interviews and he keeps interrupting to say something stupid and over the top, especially when there is a beautiful women on. Oh well, atleast I can go to sleep earlier knowing I am not missing anything:)
