Obama Lunch

President Barack Obama was greeted with cheers last week when he stopped by Capitol Hill burger joint Five Guys.

The president was joined by NBC anchor Brian Williams and a crew that was filming a behind-the-scenes "Inside The White House" special.

The NBC footage shows Obama and Williams en route to the eatery, Obama with his feet up on the opposite-facing limo seat. When Williams asks whether Obama watches debates about his presidency on cable TV, Obama says, "I have to say, I generally don't... It feels like WWF."

When they arrive at the eatery, Obama -- impatiently knocking on the locked door of the car -- is told that he must wait for the press. He responds by saying, "Why do we have to wait for the press?" Personal aide Reggie Love then opens the car door and says, "Hold on one second, Mr. President," to which Obama responds "I don't want to hold on." And out the door he walks to a crowd of cheering customers.

The clip offers a glimpse of one of the most frustrating elements of the president's job: the demanding group of handlers and security officials who constantly surround him.

Once inside, President Obama orders "one cheeseburger and one fries for me" and pays for the food with money from his own pocket.

As someone who lives in D.C., I can tell you that Five Guys is the bomb! Their burgers are good in that they are fresh, never frozen. What's more, their dogs are equally as good, especially the bacon chesse dog...

However, a true Five Guys connoisseur knows that the free roasted peanuts in the shell are not to be missed when going to Five Guys. Next time President Obama makes a Five Guys run, he should grab a bag of peanuts to take back with him to the White House as they are a very good source of protein and fiber!

I think I worry about this president as much as I do my children. (Btw, thanks BeFairNow for the 'body watch' explanation'). Vegan, I can hear the howls from the right ...the Prez wants to dictate what we eat!
Palin alone would have enough to say about that to fill an ocean.

This makes me wonder how controled Obama is. Generally if the only thing Obama is allowed to hear is what his controllers permit him to hear, then I understand why he still thinks his Wall Street economic team is doing the right thing.

Meanwhile his Wall Street Car Czar took down a million industrial jobs. Note today's headline "Foreign brands gain US entry with GM's dismantling"

did you watch the entire program? did you watch the part that how Obama is keeping in touch with regular Americans?

Oh yeah, you are right... Obama have been in power for the past eight years which created today's meltdown, the dismantling auto industry..............

I believe that everyone is doing the best we can, saving what could be saved. You can judge his work after his presidency, but frankly, not now - Six months after he got his job facing one of the toughest time in history.

Uh...Sounds like you're referring to our last president in terms of "being controlled" and/or being "permit(ed) to hear". I think this administration is much more in touch with reality.

Pres. Obama is so cool and describing debates about his presidency as WWF is hilarious but dead on. I don't blame him because I would get sick of being told to wait for this or that too.

I'm 65 and have never enjoyed being an american as much as I do right now. This man Obama is by far the most poised, intelligent, and charismatic leader we have ever enjoyed in my lifetime. Nothing seems to sway this man from his purpose. Nothing seems to interfer with his attention to duty. I sit in awe and admiration of Barack Hussien Obama, and I am not ashamed of it. I have to wonder how many true and gifted leaders have lived and died in this country, while we (white america) denied anyone except white males the opportunity to try. Who amoung us can now deny the equality that is due everyone.

For those that care: I am a white male. I am a Viet Nam Veteran. I am a lifelong American (bred and born). I am a Proud Democrat. I am a Proud Retired Union Member (CWA-AFL/CIO). I am a member of a Babtist church.

I've been saying this all along. Ever since his speech at the convention in 2004. I've never been truly affliated with one party. I love politics and have been a follower of it since 1968 even though I couldn't vote until 1972.

There is something about President Obama that other Presidents just haven't had. I liked Reagan, I liked Clinton. But Obama truly does give me hope.

You said it much better than I. And BTW I am a white recovering Catholic.

It''s so nice to hear a white man say that about Obama. I live in Virginia and there is so much racism even in my own family I'm ashamed to say. We're white too. I managed to convince my dad to vote for Obama and he, like you, is a veteran and president of a union. Thanks for the encouragement.

cut off accidentally:
..."Now, Americans would actually benefit from a change in diet. I don't think that that's something that we should legislate, but I think that it is something that, as part of our overall health care system, we should encourage because, for example, if we reduced the obesity down to the rates that existed in 1980, we would save the medicare system a trillion dollars. We would reduce diabetes rates. We would reduce heart disease. So, the fact that we subsidize some of these big agribusiness operations that are not necessarily producing healthy food, and we discourage or we don't subsidize farmers who are producing fruits and vegetables and small scale farming that gets produce immediately to consumers as opposed to having it processed... The fact that we're not doing more to make sure that healthy food is in the schools... All those things don't make sense. And I think it is important for us to re-examine our overall food policy so that we're encouraging good habits and not bad habits... For example, just making sure there are more fruits and vegetables in school lunch programs, that would make an enormous difference in how our children's diets develop. That would make us healthier over the long term. It would cut our health care costs, and maybe it would help people elsewhere in the world who are in less wealthy countries feed themselves as well."

I like him but whenever I see him ordering, it's junk.

Reminds me of my spouse. Healthy vegetarian food that I fix at home, burgers & fries out in the real world.

I agree with you 100% on the US diet, but with the pressure of that job, I don't begrudge our Prez a little comfort food. I'm sure he runs off the calories.

Unfortunately, when President Obama orders "healthy" or anything perceived different from what the "average" American may delight when soothing the palate, the WWF Media (love the comparison) brands him an elitist to make an issue out of his healthier food choices. So, perhaps this smart man has realized a greasy sandwich gives him a basic connection to most Americans... at least the media.

My love for good food, is wholesome and healthy choices. Fortunately, my dad (the chef) exposed his children to a diverse selection of food choices early in life. However, every so often ... I will enjoy a good cheeseburger out ... at home I make them using ground turkey or chicken ...

That's true. But - there's no consensus regarding what constitutes a healthy diet and it's practically impossible for someone who eats foods you and i wouldn't touch to comprehend the profound and fundamental difference a healthy diet can make in the perception, disease resistance, behavior, outlook and ability to foresee and deal with the problems we all must face daily without actually walking that path.

Would Obama be a better President if he didn't eat items that I consider to be unsuitable as food? He probably would. The problem is, there's very little that can be done about it at present, so I suggest we all try to be good examples of what we believe in.

"the fact that we subsidize some of these big agribusiness operations that are not necessarily producing healthy food, and we discourage or we don't subsidize farmers who are producing fruits and vegetables and small scale farming that gets produce immediately to consumers as opposed to having it processed..."

"just making sure there are more fruits and vegetables in school lunch programs, that would make an enormous difference in how our children's diets develop. That would make us healthier over the long term."

All worthy of attention.

Barack Obama, on August 1, 2008 in St. Petersburg, Florida: "Right now, our food system worldwide is under enormous pressure. It's under enormous pressure because first of all, you've had as a consequence of climate change, you've had severe changes in weather patterns. We don't fully understand what these effects are. But, for example, Australia's had huge drought which has taken a lot of crops, or grain production has been much lower, and supplies are tight. You're starting to see riots around food in places like Haiti and other poor countries around the world. And what is also true is that as countries like China and India become wealthier, they start changing their food habits, they start eating more meat-- more animals. And what happens then is because it takes more grain to produce a pound of beef than if they were just eating the grain, what ends up happening is that it puts huge pressure on food supplies.

alreadyfamous:One good thing about Bush is that he acknowledged that he didn't care for or include "regular" Americans as his counterpart. Remember that he referred to his buddies as tha "Haves and Have Mores". When we marched against the invasion of Iraq, he said that he didn't care.
If he had dropped by a burger joint or restaurant, he would have been booed.

Hi NonaG, I think it's called 'body watch', meaning that the press perform an additional security function for the President by literally keeping their cameras on him at all times so that if (God forbid) something were to happen to him, there would be a record of who was present and the 'before', 'during' and 'after'. This helps the secret service with their training as they are able to review footage, see any potential 'blind spots' and tailor their protection to suit. Remember during the presidential campaign how that man was able to harass then Senator Obama outside a cheese shop? He got way too close for way too long and though he wasn't violent, he was hostile. The SS were roundly spanked for that and have been noticeably much more careful about who gets close ever since. On another subject, with respect to Mr. Williams question, of course the President doesn't watch cable chatter by talking heads about himself and his presidency. He doesn't need to because he's smarter than all of them and then some.

..uh, huh? BeFair made some astute points, and is true, they do review the footoage and make adjustments as for opinion that figures no need for CIC to watch the daily talking heads blather endlessly, uh...think he IS smarter than that blathering, but has others who tab it to note what the blathering is attempting to rachet up and besides, he really has a full plate of problems to wonk away on,, a family to interact with and more important stuff than to sit around catching the varous airtime ditherings !! Perhaps in ones life , a reality check is handy as well and a bit broader perspectvity would be an asset as well !

Bush never did anything like this because he knew he was hated, he would probably get cursed at and the secret service would have an impossible time.

bush just hid in his office with cheney figuring out more ways to screw the country . he never liked or was able to even relate to the regular hard working guy.

we are just not used to a human president like Obama. A man with warmth and personality that people like and that he has strong feelings about keeping close to the people.

how wonderfully refreshing.

Bush wasn't hated at the beginning of his Presidency. The hatred didn't begin until he ordered the invasion of Iraq..and thereafter it all kinda GREW for Bush kinda like the HOUSING BUBBLE.....alllllll lies and denies. President Obama is a GEM .......his speech to the Muslims, his very somber speech the concentration camp ...he's BRILLIANT. I love this video clip of The Boss and The Burgers. I'm a Texan and I tell you the shrub was hated long before he was elevated to his imperial presidency. He is still to this day wholly incapable of facing an unscreened audience, let alone answering unexpected questions. He doesn't care for that, and turns quite childishly nasty towards everyone within range. That's why we largely are spared his actual presence on the street in Big D these days, they can't screen the general public sufficiently to keep the bushbaby safe from his own vitriolic blowback.

Many were NEVER charmed by Bush, and a good number to this day remain incensed that he got basically selected/appointed via the USSC which overstepped their boundaries --THAT was quite an ominous beinning caused a MAJOR MISTRUST that only increased thru the years and with so many revelations of just how the Bush Brigade "Reigned and weilded THEIR empowerment by those titles they held, good reason to be wary from the start and NOT EVER REALLY GOING TO GET OVER IT !! If it can HAPPEN ONCE, it can be repeated ....We the people DO realize that !!!
