Sacha Baron Cohen Sued Over Bruno Bingo Melee

LANCASTER, Calif. — Sacha Baron Cohen's new movie is already getting the same sort of buzz and legal backlash that came with his last hit. This time, though, a woman is alleging injuries far beyond just a bruised ego or reputation.

Richelle Olson sued the 37-year-old actor-comedian and NBC Universal on May 22, claiming an incident at a charity bingo tournament that was filmed for the upcoming "Bruno" left her disabled.

Olson claims she was severely injured after struggling with Baron Cohen and his film crew at the event in Palmdale, Calif., two years ago. The lawsuit states she now needs a wheelchair or cane to move around.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages of more than $25,000.

Phone and e-mail messages left with publicists for Baron Cohen and NBC Universal weren't returned Wednesday.

His 2006 film "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" produced numerous lawsuits by people claiming they were duped and humiliated by his antics. A New York judge last year threw out claims by a driving instructor and two etiquette teachers after determining they signed agreements releasing filmmakers from liability.

It was unclear whether the incident involving Olson will appear in "Bruno." The lawsuit mentions contracts that Olson apparently signed, but claim they were entered under "duress" and included several misrepresentations.

"Borat" was a surprise box-office hit, earning more than $125 million in the United States.

In "Bruno," scheduled for release July 10, Baron Cohen plays a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashionista. Much like in "Borat," Baron Cohen's humor depends on cajoling people to let him into events and he then tapes their reactions to his outlandish behavior.

The character is already making a splash _ a sketch during Sunday's MTV Video Music awards had Bruno dropping onto Eminem with his crotch placed in the rapper's face. It became the show's most talked-about moment.

Olson's lawsuit contends Baron Cohen has 30 sham companies that help him pull off his ruses and that is how the comedian and his camera crew gained entry into the Desert Valley Charities' bingo tournament in May 2007.

Baron Cohen was invited to the event because his handlers identified him as a "celebrity" who was filming a documentary on bingo, the suit states. The event was to raise money for nursing students.

According to the lawsuit, Baron Cohen _ in character as Bruno _ started using vulgarities while calling the second bingo game in front of a mostly elderly audience.

A struggle ensued after Olson tried to grab the microphone away from Baron Cohen. She claims he then called his camera crew over, who attacked her for at least a minute, hoping to "create a dramatic emotional response."

Olson's suit states she ran from the stage and was found moments later by a co-worker, sobbing uncontrollably. She then fell to the floor, hitting her head on a concrete slab.

The suit states she suffered brain bleeding as a result.

The lawsuit, filed in Lancaster about 70 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, was first reported by celebrity gossip Web site TMZ.

This is such a blatantly stupid lawsuit.

So she tries to force the mic from him. His crew "attacks her" but not apparently physically or verbally but rather tries to egg her on. She gets upset and runs off and cries. Someone else not from the film crew finds her she trips(?) and bangs her head. Then she claims 2 years after the fact that he was the one that injured her?

At the very worst he made her cry. She injured herself when she fell down BY HERSELF. No one even touched her when she did it. She just fell down.

My guess is she was upset then, when someone found her crying, tried to up the drama and sympathy by dropping to the ground sobbing and instead flung herself into a concrete slab and a wheelchair.

He looks like a prince in that picture. People got this guy all wrong. He's smarter than more people realize.

Sasha Baron Cohen doesn't attack individuals, he just points out the flaws of our social conditioning rather brilliantly.

His 'humour' is on the same level as Jerry Springer's

Not even close, I guarantee you he's 10x more intelligent than Jerry friggin' Springer. Do you realize he went to Cambridge?

$25,000? She sure low-balled herself (no Eminem-related pun intended).

Unless Cohen is somehow responsible for gravity, I don't see this frivolous lawsuit succeeding. Reading the release that you signed after the fact then claiming duress? Nice try.

Nothing funny or cutting edge about this creepy guy. Rude and crude bathroom humor, gee how talented. Not.

You've just shown yourself publicly to have no sense of humor. Congrats.

If you watched his first movie you'd realize the profound social statements he was making through his humor, like when people at that rodeo in the south cheered for the blood of Iraqis or the young college students admitted their biases. I know on the surface he may seem the way you described, but believe me there's some genius cultural implications of American culture in his humor.

I agree he's a genius and someone I love to laugh with.

I loved him on HBO and wish he'd do a movie about all three of his characters.

Let's just see how the movie turns out.

This article isn't giving all the information. She is saying this happened in 2007, which is way before the movie even started to film. It seems strange to me that she is only bring this up now and not two years ago. I'm sorry that she has to walk with a cane but something about this seems fishy to me.

I am so sorry for this lady to have gone through such humiliation. I hope she wins A LOT of money from this 'person' and I use the term lightly. Enough is enough, Sasha Baron Cohen.
11:57 AM on 06/04/2009
Cry me a river. You don't like his comedy, that's fine. But "using the term person lightly'? Ummm... i'd apply that to a certain german leader in the thirties and forties... not some comedian who is controversial.

Enough with the butt already. You stole your act from Zoolander.

Now what?
12:21 AM on 06/04/2009
Even working on the assumption he got ideas from that movie, he takes the concepts to the stratosphere. However, he did not steal anything from Zoolander. I was watching him do these same three characters (Bruno, Borat and Ali G) on the Eleven O'Clock Show on BBC when I lived in England in 1999.
01:27 PM on 06/04/2009
Exactly, people don't realize how long he's been around or how ignorant and bigoted he's made some really famous people look.
12:00 AM on 06/05/2009
Zoolander came out in 2001. "Da Ali G Show" was already on the air for a year before that. All three of his characters (Ali G, Borat and Bruno) were on every episode. Seems to me that, if there was any stealing, it was Ben Stiller that stole from Baron Cohen, not the other way around.
