This is a matter of great concern. The male/female ratio is way out of whack in China, partially because of the one-child policy, but mostly because of normal statistical variation.

There are many social problems that happen when the ratio gets off. Women do well, since they will marry up into higher social classes. The poorest, most uneducated men are left to themselves, and right now are also unemployed since the economy has tanked and the construction jobs are gone. A society with a bunch of unhappy, poor, uneducated young men is an explosive awaiting a match. The last time China got in this situation in the 1800s, a heretical Christian sect led by a man who thought he was Jesus' younger brother led 20 million people to their death in the Taiping Rebellion.
