Earth

World Environment Day, which falls on June 5 every year, was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 -- shortly after the US instituted Earth Day.

While there are many ways of observing World Environment Day, one of the easiest and certainly the newest is Twittering for Trees:

United Nations World Environment Day is coming up on June 5th, and in an effort to get things rolling, the organization launched a Twitter contest (that is also a great way to market the earth-focused day) that for each new Twitterer that follows @UNEPandYou before June 5th, a tree will be planted.

Hard to say if the US will notice -- we did just have Earth Day, after all, and then there's the weird little issue of the official North American World Environment Day host city -- Omaha, Nebraska. Though it is Nebraska's largest city, it's awfully difficult to get the coast's attention from Omaha, unless you're the Oracle.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

The days come and go. I suggest an Earth Year. World Environment Year.

Or,... I could plant some more cucumbers & beans, to go along with my tomatoes, eggplant & peppers,... eat the wholesome produce, and compost the rest at the end of the summer instead.

I planted a couple of trees last year and the backyard is too small for another one.

buy a pound of coal and bury it in the backyard so nobody can ever burn it

Obviously the comment I made last night about environment and immigration to this country was censored.

Plant a tree, yes, that is something; yet better yet, start compost piles and STOP flushing our $hit with water!

An amazing presentation well worth the watch and time to share with EVERYONE!

Only if we need forests we will grow them. Interests of our economy, our health, and health of planet must to be combined.

Earth day or Environment day, we should all be concerned about these issues everyday. We have donated 50 trees in honor of this recognized day of environmental spotlight.

Thanks to those of you have done your part in this wonderful cause.

Some trees re-emit their carbon as isoprene (oak) and alpha-pinine (pine). These are very reactive compounds that contribute to air pollution in places where you have a lot of cars.

"But seriously: Reduce, reuse, recycle."
Sometime it is good slogan, sometime it is bad, and always it is NOT ENOUGH.
Plant a tree.
As you can read in Tim Flannery book “The Weather Makers,” 2006:
“ Forests contain much more carbon than does grass, and they also absorb more sunlight (having different albedo) and produce more water vapor, which affects cloud formation”.
“Mature forests don’t take in much CO2 they are in balance, releasing CO2 as old vegetation rots, then absorbing it as new grows. For these reasons the world largest forests-the coniferous forests of Siberia and Canada, and the tropical rainforests are not good carbon sinks, but new vigorously forests are.”
If old trees will anyway rots it is nothing wrong to cut old trees and use wood energy especially if we can sequestered all GHG from that power plants as nutrition to grow forests.
It takes one ton of coal to generate an average of 2500 kWh of electricity.
It takes less than 1.6 ton of wood to generate the same amount of energy.
In huge power plants we are loosing 80% of heat energy in vain.
In small power plants we can use as electricity, as heat.
Only if we need forests we will grow them. Interests of our economy, our health, and health of planet must to be combined.

Getting Rachel Maddow to focus on the environment is like trying to get a fish to ride a bicycle. She will spend World Earth Day on her endless dribble about torture, Gitmo and gays. If you are tired of her lip service to environmental issues, send her an email to rachel@msnbc.com. I have stoppoed watching her show for the past 2 months after not even mentioning Earth Day on he show. She has the same guests over and over talking about the same three issues over and over. How pathetic she has become and her most recent ratings reflect it even though she is the most liberal commentator on TV.

The criticisms you make of Rachel are actually more telling about YOU. You care more about trees than you do about human rights. You are a j3rk with a very narrow agenda.

I'm a conservationist myself and will be planting trees, but I'd choose to help out a fellow human being over planting a tree anyday. Then I'd get my new friend to help me plant trees.

Any occasion to get people to focus on the environment is a good thing, methinks...
