NEW YORK — This was a Belmont for the Birds. It was Summer Bird, not Mine That Bird and jockey Calvin Borel, who came roaring down the long stretch and won the final jewel of the Triple Crown on Saturday.

For a brief moment on the turn for home, Borel looked like a winner. His tough little gelding took the lead, and even Borel believed his victory guarantee was assured.

"I thought I was home free," he said, "but the other horses galloped by."

They sure did.

With the crowd of 52,861 cheering on the leaders in the stretch, Mine That Bird passed Dunkirk. But it was Summer Bird who pulled away from them both for a 2 3/4-length victory, with Dunkirk second and Mine That Bird a neck back in third in the field of 10 3-year-olds

The upset ended Borel's bid to become the first jockey to win a personal Triple Crown, and he failed to deliver on a guarantee of victory in the Belmont Stakes. Borel won the Kentucky Derby aboard Mine That Bird, then took the Preakness with the filly Rachel Alexandra.

Summer Bird, sent off at 11-1 odds, gave jockey Kent Desormeaux a Belmont victory he desperately wanted.

"I hope from now on we'll talk about winning one," Desormeaux said.

Last year, he won the Derby and Preakness aboard Big Brown, only to have to pull up the colt in the Belmont. And in 1998, he brought Real Quiet into the Belmont for a Triple try only to get beat by Victory Gallop by a nose in a heartbreaking defeat.

Charitable Man was fourth Saturday, followed by Luv Gov, Flying Private, Brave Victory, Mr. Hot Stuff, Chocolate Candy and Miner's Escape.

There was an inquiry filed by Charitable Man's jockey Alan Garcia against Dunkirk for interference, but it was disallowed by the racing stewards.

The winning time for the 1 1/2 miles was 2:27.54.

The Triple Crown season ended the way it started _ with an upset. Mine That Bird was all but discounted in the Derby, but won at 50-1 odds _ and his 6 3/4-length winning margin was the largest in 63 years. Two weeks later, Borel was obligated to ride Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness for new owner Jess Jackson, and the filly beat Mine That Bird by a length. Jackson said last week Rachel Alexandra would be given a rest and not run in the Belmont.

In the Belmont, Mine That Bird was sent off as the 6-5 favorite, but he seemed a bit more frisky than usual in the paddock and on the walk through the tunnel to the track. And he was a little too eager in the race, pulling Borel into contention sooner than anyone expected.

"He might have been a hair higher today coming in here, just a little more amped up," Mine That Bird trainer Chip Woolley said, "but overall he was the same horse I led up in the Derby. He ran a great race and just got beat, and you have to accept that and go on."

Summer Bird, meanwhile, looked almost regal before the start. The chestnut son of 2004 Belmont winner Birdstone _ yes, the same sire as Mine That Bird _ took the rail route usually the trademark of a Borel ride before breaking outside and into the clear.

"The colt broke like a rocket," Desormeaux said. "He absolutely dragged me around the race track. I had an armchair ride until I found some room. I found room."

Summer Bird won the Belmont in just his fifth career start. Owned by Drs. Kalarikkal and Vilasini Jayaraman, the colt did not run as a 2-year-old. In his third start, he was a closing third in the Arkansas Derby and came back and was a closing sixth in the Derby _ 13 lengths behind Mine That Bird.

Summer Bird, trained by the recently licensed Tim Ice, returned $25.80. $9.30 and $4.70. Dunkirk paid $5.40 and $3.60, and Mine That Bird returned $2.60 to show.

Ice seemed stunned by his colt's accomplishment, which came on the trainer's 35th birthday. As he walked into the postrace news conference, he was serenaded with a rendition of "Happy Birthday."

"Right now it's just unexplainable," he said. "If my career goes nowhere from here, I've got a Belmont win."

Once again, the "Test of the Champion," prevented a little Triple Crown history. While a Triple Crown wasn't on the line for a horse, Borel was certain he'd pull off an unprecedented Triple of his own.

But for now, the Belmont remains a race usually reserved for long shots. The favorite has won only six of the last 30 runnings of the longest and most grueling of the Triple Crown races.

"He was tired. He was used, but he looked all right," Woolley said. "We're a little down, disappointed right now. He ran a great race. It's been a lot of fun. We'll give him a good eight weeks off and let him freshen up."

I'm kind of sorry MTB didn't win... but... what a fun and fabulous triple crown season... three beautiful horses -- three exciting races... what more can you ask for... and MTB is one fine racehorse... contending in all three races...

Summer Bird looked the best before the race. Mine That Bird didn't look as good as before, the attitude was gone and he was just irritated and a bit sour. He was so calm before the Preakness, this was a different horse. Dunkirk was the biggest surprise.

Still think Mr. Hot Stuff is the best looking horse in the field, that's one gorgeous horse. Hope he gets it together soon. Guessing he's heading back to the synthetics.

Mind That Bird, great little guy with a big heart. Of course, I absolutely adore Rachel Alexandra. I'm hoping she will be running at Belmont later this month in the Mother Goose Stakes.

I have always heard that the Belmont Stakes is the toughest of the three -- the longest, for sure. But it was a nice that another Bird won.

The extra distance and that long stretch has done in more than a few Triple Crown aspirants.

Summer Bird, coming from the same bloodlines as MTB, is another GREAT long distance, stretch-running horse. What a GREAT run Desamoreaux gave Summer Bird. He kept his cool on the rail while the field made their moves going to the home stretch and pushed 3 wide (in the process pushing another horse 4 wide) coming into the last turn. Saving ground and energy, Summer Bird had plenty of kick left to swallow up the front running Dunkirk (who also is a VERY good horse...i think sub 47 second half mile pace) and MTB going to the wire. A WELL deserved victory to an excellent horse, jockey and trainer! Congratulations to the owners and that bloodline is a belmont BEAST!!

I was glad that Desamoreaux got the win after the disappointing loss on Big Brown, for which he received a lot of criticism that I believe was unjustified.

Calvin Borel is totally to blame for Mine That Bird coming in 3rd. He made his horse's move MUCH too early and the horse just didn't have the gas to push through the wire. He started his move with more than 5/8's of a mile and going to the outside. WAY too early to expect the kind of kick going home that MTB showed in the first two races.

It's a bittersweet moment for me that MTB lost. I HATED the fact that the media made it all about the fairweather jockey, Borel. He didn't even board another horse today at Belmont. He was busy making appearances to promote himself all week. Calvin Borel; it's not about YOU!!! It's about the horses! Enjoy your humble pie, SON!

That said, it was a helluva run for Mine That Bird in this TC run. I think MTB will run for years to come and he'll run very well. He's got a great pedigree and knows how to go to the front coming down the stretch.

Aside from the race itself, ABCs coverage of it was way overproduced -- to the point where it was distracting enough to make me want to turn off the TV rather than listen to all that noise.

And they need to screen their commercials for vulgarity before putting them on. I don't mean dirty-word vulgarity; I mean the vulgarity of sheer cheesy-ness.

Sometimes announcers need to say less, rather than annoy viewers with a steady spew of inanities.

Disappointing for the tough little colt from New Mexico but quite respectable. 1st in the Derby, 2nd in the Preakness and 3rd in the Belmont. Not too shabby for a horse no one paid any attention to leading up to the Blemont. Great things can come in small packages.

Actually people were paying a great deal of attention to him leading up to the Belmont, He was favored to win! It was the Kentucky Derby where he was a long-shot that no one was paying much attention to.

That was understandable because he had had a couple of poor races at Sunland Park in New Mexico, against not very impressive competition, and had finished only 12th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, even though he had won the 2-year-old championship in Canada. After his good start as 2-year-old, he seemed to dropped off pretty badly, so it wasn't all that surprising that people weren't anticipating the Derby win.

If you want an example of REALLY great things coming in small packages (as far as race horses are concerned, anyway), IMHO you should go back 45 years to Northern Dancer!

The Belmont distance was also the undoing of Northern Dancer. But he had a lot of heart which endeared him to the fans.
