Obamas Date Night Paris

PARIS — Ah, Paris. The city of love. And the city of this week's presidential date night.

A week after flying to New York for dinner and a Broadway show, President Barack Obama and first lady, Michelle, dined at a cozy neighborhood bistro just a few blocks from the Eiffel Tower.

The president and first lady were in France to join their counterparts from France, Canada and Britain to commemmorate the 65th anniversary of D-Day, the allied invasion of Normandy in World War II that led to victory in Europe.

La Fontaine de Mars dates back to 1908 and specializes in rustic dishes from France's southwest region of Bordeaux Perigord and the Basque. Foie gras, duck and cassoulet are on the menu, although the White House has not said what the president and first lady chose.

The Obamas shared the restaurant with other diners, and other restaurants on the winding Rue St. Dominique were filled. Police, some in riot gear, lined the street. Crowds pressed behind barriers at the end of the street to glimpse the first couple, and about 100 people gathered there burst into applause as the Obamas left the restaurant. Clusters of people at street corners held up cell phones and cameras to snap pictures.

After dinner and a ride along the quai on the Left Bank of the Seine River, the Obamas returned to the U.S. ambassador's residence, where first daughters Sasha and Malia awaited them.

Earlier in the day, Sasha and Malia joined their parents on a visit to Notre Dame Cathedral, where a children's choir sang and the president lit a candle. They climbed the stairs for a view of the city from the roof of the 12th century Gothic church. The cathedral was closed to the public during the first family's visit.

The first family's motorcade traveled to the cathedral along the Boulevard St. Germain, where hundreds lined the street hoping to see them.

What they fail to realize is that by patronizing places which are important to the French simply by having dinner there, the Obama's have shown utmost respect to France and her citizens. The very fact that hundreds line the streets just for a glimpse of this power couple, and they are Americans who were once hated by the masses speaks volumes. Why Conservatives want the world to hate the U.S.A. is something I can't yet understand, but then again they seem to hate this country themselves.

Sorry but Americans were never hated in France but Bush and his administration. I think The French as many other citizens in this world are now so glad the American people voted President Obama into the White House!

It seems rbutler is a hopelessly LOST individual in body and soul and that is truly pathetic. It's hard to say anthing to people who are so "out of sorts". I truly feel for him/her and maybe one day, they'll see that they are fighting a losing battle. Nothing the new president has done should be so distasteful as the words coming out of this commenter's mouth.

Let's keep it real people. It's not the end of the world and times are getting better. We don't need to be singing the "end days" song so soon. Let's cheer up and live our lives in harmony, peace, and love for one another for a CHANGE that really matters!

Just like the typical Obama faithful, you don't address exactly what I said that you take exception to and why but just 'name call' or saying disparaging things. Are you related to Sean Hannity?

Plus, I hear the fear in so many of your voices that emphasizes the fact that "white" may soon be the minority color. To me, it doesn't matter at all because I feel we can ALL get along, no matter WHAT COLOR we are. But to some, especially those who are intent on dissing our president, it seems to hurt them very much to see their "white" American traditions fade away when they should be trying to mingle with ALL Americans in bringing the GOOD of their traditions to the table to share with colors of all kind.

Why can't we just all get along, no matter what race, color, ethnicity! That is the perfect world to me!

All of you people who cannot stand to see Obama and family having such a wonderful time are just a bunch of "green-eyed jealous fanatics" and you SHOULD be called out by others for your comments. The whole time Bush was in office, I heard none of these exaggerated comments on anything Bush did in the way of so-called "wasting money" and it just lets everyone know how prejudice you really are. Why others can get away with doing these things for years and as soon as a black family do them, everyone has something to complain about.

Get over it!

You must be new to this planet. When the Reagans came into office, Ronnie put on a tux and he and Nancy really put on the Ritz to much criticism for their glitzy lifestyle. But, you're quick to play the race card. You probably always have and probably always will. Therefore, your comments can be put in perspective.

My comment was meant for those who are saying "mean" things about our president and his family for no other reason than to show their jealousy. These type of comments such as YOURS for instance are racist and that's all there is to it. If you can't stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen. You think you can comment so negatively about our president and NOT get feedback, then you're in the wrong place babay!

Get over it!

I can no more explain to you what it is to be white in America than I can to be a female or of privilege. However this does not make me less of a citizen nor deny my protection by it laws.

We are so privileged beyond comparison to any other nations - that is what angered me so much about the Bush Administrations "enhanced interrogation techniques." The US Constitution has served us as a people well - with a few adjustments - I cannot forgive the Bush administration for trashing our values, traditions and beliefs because of fear. I cannot nor should the nation.

The ole' girl (USA) will survive because the people have spoken on 04 November 2008 discarding the fear and grabbing hope...

I will support this president and his administration with every breathe an fiber of my being up and until I am give a valid reason not to do so - which I do not forsee.

President Obama epitomizes the true American dream for us and the world.

The world has changed since the election your eyes are filled with hate and perhaps racism. We are not naive and we realize that there are bad guys remain at-large however the entire purpose and definition of terrorism is to DISRUPT normalcy. I do not voluntarily surrender my freedom to hover in a dark dungeon bunker.

After all I am three generations Americans of African -American slaves and European blood - We don't surrender EVER.

Good morning Complainers and Haters! All of these comments about Obama and his wife spending time with each other in France proves that Americans really spend too much time behind sitting behind their computer screens. I actually laugh at all of your complaints. Because...as of November 4th, 2008 there is nothing you can do about it. Continue complaining. Meanwhile the President will continue being just that...the President.

The President and his family represent the greatest nation on the planet and deserve the respect which they achieved via hard work, dedication and perseverance. President Obama's campaign executed a brilliant grassroots efforts beating a formidable machine and opponent in the primaries. From there he and his staff demolished the Republican old -guard to win the general election.

During the campaign and primaries the staff went through great lengths NOT to allow publicity of the vile hate attacks against campaign offices and staff. They hid it from public view. (I don't agree with that but...)

Racism exist and will always in so form or another in our nation and others. President Eisenhower once stated,"Everyone has to h ave their Jew."

I do not need to justify my voting for this president - in fact I won't because its not necessary. I believe that I voted for the best candidate which is all that matters.

We need to demand a clamp down on these personal attacks against the first family and the political comments which cross the line. They in my opinion are seedlings to future DANGER for our nation and the safety of this president.

Be forewarned rightwingers; if anything should befall this president or one of his loved ones, you will have not only the nation but the world to answer to for inciting the wackoos...

How absolutely PERFECT.... Pres Obama turned down a big fancy, flashy dinner with the Pres of France - and choose instead to have a "quiet" dinner alone with Michelle...... This couple continue to hit the mark of style and substance...... The Obama's continue to show us how much they value each other - and not as props (as some politicians seems to treat their families)......

I love it that he wanted to spend an evening in France with JUST his wife.... PRICELESS!

These are the family values that so called "conservatives" are all up in arms about. They would so love for the President to be caught up in some scandal with a young French mademoiselle then see him take the First Lady out for a quiet meal together...no they want unrest, divorce (a la Gingrich) and hate.

you are so informed! The invitation was for Friday night, it was not fancy but just "private" and this dinner for two was Saturday night. As President Obama was on his way back to the US, Michelle her daughters, her mother and her nieces had lunch at the Elysee Palace with Nicolas and Carla Sarkozy, Carla's mother and son Aurelien and Sarkozy 's son louis.

Also the sun is shining between France and the US, what obviousely is not your taste.

I am exhausted reading the negative comments about President Obama and his "leisure" time. It is unprecedented in our nations history that citizens complained so vociferously on this topic. When an individual is elected the office is not part-time and I submit that there really isn't downtime.

The rightwinger pundits like Hannity and Rush and politico's like Palin have unmasked a dangerous element -whilst is it true that each president places his life and that of his family on the line front and center after each election; I submit none has had more threats than President Obama - NONE.

The political agenda of many such as Liz Cheney and her father's is DANGEROUS to the cohesive spirit of national unity.

No other exiting administration has waged war against an incumbent in our nations history so early and disturbingly bordering treason in comments. Usually former administrations remain silent until one year has passed - The right wing attacks started from DAY ONE.

Mrs. Reagan seemed pretty happy to be having lunch with Mrs. Obama at the White House last week while Pres Obama was in the Middle East . Mrs Obama made sure that the Regan china was used at the luncheon and that Mrs. Regan's favorite flowers, peonies, were on the table. I'm just pointing out the class and respect that Mrs. Obama showed to Mrs. Reagan, as it should be. Maybe you could take a few lessons from both of these women.
