Palin Denies Plagiarism Charge

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has been accused of paraphrasing at length from an article co-written by Newt Gingrich when she gave a speech, but her lawyer says proper credit was given to the former House speaker.

Blogger Geoffrey Dunn, who is writing a book about the former Republican vice presidential candidate, made the accusation on the Huffington Post Web site.

Dunn compared Palin's speech introducing conservative talk show host Michael Reagan, son of former President Ronald Reagan, to an Anchorage audience Wednesday to the article urging Republicans to study Reagan, written by Gingrich and Craig Shirley in 2005.

"It is abundantly clear in context, and even in subcontext, that the overview of President Reagan's legacy was attributed to Newt Gingrich," Palin's lawyer, Thomas Van Flein, said.

"Far from 'lifting' or plagiary, this is proper attribution in a political speech," Van Flein said. "The audience was made aware that Mr. Gingrich wrote about President Reagan's legacy, and Gov. Palin attributed her paraphrasing to Mr. Gingrich expressly and did so at the beginning and at the end of the paraphrasing."

Palin twice referenced Gingrich during the speech. Toward the beginning, she said, "Recently, Newt Gingrich, he had written a good article about Reagan."

Later, she said, "What Newt had written in this article, he wrote, 'Remember how refreshing it was with his outrageous directness that Americans loved, and praised and deserved' that Reagan dealt with, with then the troublesome Soviet Union, remember this? His vision for the Cold War? We win, they lose."

Dunn examined similarities when comparing Palin's speech to the article.

In one part of her 17-minute introduction of Michael Reagan, Palin said, "We have to remember first that Ronald Reagan never won any arguments in Washington. He won the arguments by resonating with the American people."

Gingrich and Shirley wrote in their article, "Reagan never won an argument in Washington. Reagan won his arguments in the country with the American people ... ."

In another part of the speech, Palin said, "We would do so well to look back on those Reagan years as he championed the cause for freedom and then he lived it out as our president _ cheerfully, persistently and unapologetically."

The 2005 article says, "Cheerful persistence rather than easy victories were the keys to Reagan's career."

Kathleen Parker had it right when she wrote in National Review Online: "If BS were currency, Palin could bail out Wall Street herself."

It may not be plagiarism but it is more evidence that Plain isnt capable of original, creative, or independent thinking.

Palin-Prejean 2012! Yes, that should definitely be the Republican strategy for winning the white house. They so happily overlook the silliness of both these characters anyway - why not get them together and you'll have a powerhouse Republican nomination. Both are entertainers, both openly ridicule opposing ideas and both completely (and successfully) pretend that their problems are, well, just fluffy air that no one but the 'left' would notice because the 'left' hates them for being attractive Republicans! Ha!

It is quite obvious that Palin is speaking to the red state people who were in the beginning wooed by her . However after they saw a very empty expensive suit , they moved on and she just refuses to go away . She speaks in a manner that she thinks others will not pick up on what she is saying . She is basiclly spreading hate in code . We see what she is doing . She like Hannity , O'Reilly, Limbaugh . Beck Gengrich , Scarbrough , Lou Dobbs, Pat Buchannan,Elisabeth Hasslebeck and others are , are all hate mongers and should not be allowed to spread hate on tv where viewers as well as kids pick up this hate speech . The FCC needs to step in and do something now . The idea that someone could listen to Bill O'Reilly everynight ,become full of hate , stalk a DR who was at his church on sunday morning is a signal that enough is enough . It is time to change the rules of the game . Free speech is now being abbussed .

Palin is a monument to the problems within parts of our American educational system. Palin is the constant reminder to all Americans that President Obama is correct that our educational system needs fixing. America's school system needs to be updated to recognize the value of not moving students along without recognizing and attending to low achieving students. If Sarah Palin represents the results of what a college education produces in America, we have failed profoundly. More embarrassing to me as an American is that this pitiful woman was allowed to run as a vice presidential candidate. She isn't even capable of formulating a complete coherent sentence or thought. She is an unlearned pawn of the Republican party to appeal to an embarrassing base of political and social thinking that thrives on the ills of the past. So she is accused of plagiarism. No big deal for Palin. It is probably how she stumbled her way through school. She chose Newt's words to plagiarize...geez, I rest my case. Palin is a poor and embarrassing example of a leader for progressive educated Americans, particularly women. How can a person lead when they have no fluid concept of the past, present or future, let alone articulate it. She is mentally and socially illiterate.

So, what does Newt have to say about all this?

I see Palin's lawyer playing defense and nothing from Newt.

And the play on the field is..... Palin doesn't get a speaking slot at the convention.....

Newt wins!

Yeah, BigStick, I'm sure vishnucoming would be happier if you picked, oh, say Batista, that great leader, or someone like that.

Almost as embarrassing as BHO saying he had visited 57 states, or recently in a speech, without flinching, that the constitution was written 20 centuries ago. If we are looking for verbal garbage we can get it straight from the number one and number two. Biden is a national joke, rivaling Quail, or even outdoing him. Biden just needs a little time. Anyone listening to the average Biden speech ends up wondering what the heck he is even talking about.

Sure. That's why, in the Vice Presidential debate, Biden kicked your girl's butt and wiped her nose. It wasn't even so much that Biden did anything to make her look clueless. Her natural cluelessness gushed out on its own, emphasized by the contrast to Biden. Sarah was so clueless that her handlers claimed she won the debate, while she had actually made herself a laughingstock with her empty-headed cliches and her rambling, incoherent syntax. Republicans are pathetic.

This verbal diarrhea alone is so disastrously funny, it's amazing anyone can stop laughing long enough to analyze to what degree it was stolen.

Just imagine this woman speaking to leaders of foreign nations in her nonsensical, childish gibberish. How embarrassing.

I hope the GOP is watching Sarah's All About Me Show closely, because if they are stupid enough to back her as a candidate, their Presidential campaign in 2012 could be remembered forever for Palin's particular brand of anti-intellectual, incomprehensible nothingness. A fitting epitaph--

Blabbering 425 words after that lifted directly from the Gingrich/Shirley speech before she mentions Gingrich again.

Using 2 or 3 phrases in the whole speech would be unremarkable, even if she only mentioned him once.

But 10 minutes worth of talking, without mentioning either Gingrich or Shirley ONCE, until just before she finished the part of the speech that she "borrowed"?

Her lawyer called that "proper attribution" but authorative sources say otherwise.

See http://www.plagiarism.org , especially the part about "what constitutes plagiarism" and "the fair use rule".

This 'charge' of plagiarism is laughable at best.

What? No mention of the world's serial plagiarist Joe Biden?

I have stopped counting the number of times this man has blatantly plagiarized a speech.
