World Naked Bike Ride Day, typically observed on March 8, was inexplicably celebrated by a few people on World Environment Day, which was June 5 -- easy to get the two mixed up, I guess.

1) Just because it's POSSIBLE to bicycle while naked does NOT mean it's a GOOD IDEA to bicycle while naked.
2) It's also clear: just because it's natural DOES NOT make it beautiful.

I've seen it done three times now, in York, UK. The first time, it's a bit of a shock, as they cycle by quite slowly, with bells and horns sounding and radios playing - acres of skin, acres of tattoos and body paint, a whole lot of fun in a way, but not quite like any "romantic" view of naturism. But then the next thing is that they stop and you talk to one of them - in my case, a middle-aged lady wearing the lower half of a ballet tutu and some body paint. The message is serious enough - the shock tactics may be a little dubious.

The second and third time, it's different - little or no shock impact, bit of a laugh, and that's about it.

However, the York rides have been modest in scale so far - much larger events in London and elsewhere must make much more impact. Part of the idea behind (!) cycling nude is to express how vulnerable the human body is to high-powered petroleum-fuelled vehicles. There is a serious point to be made there, especially in view of the people who collect their kids from school in their 4 x 4 off-roaders, insulated from the real world by tinted windows and air-conditioning.

The York, England WNBR event is scheduled for this coming Friday, June 12. Over the past three years, they've always had a glorious summer evening. This week, it's fairly cool and the forecast is for rain. Hmm.
