Howard Stern

Howard Stern went on the "Late Show" last night and skewered both Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien. He referred to the latter as "This Conan" and the "new guy," treating him as the upstart who dare not take on Dave. Stern repeatedly said how much pressure he felt to help Dave beat the new "Tonight Show" host in the ratings. Stern, a loyal guest of Letterman's, maintained that Dave put him on the air when he was an unknown and he won't appear on other late night shows as a result.

Howard had much harsher words for Leno, declaring "I didn't like Jay, I never liked Jay, I can't stand Jay." Letterman was obviously embarrassed throughout the segment, half-heartedly trying to change the subject. "I've never seen anybody who behaves like a robot like this guy," Stern continued, "I watched his final show (he says goodbye to the "Tonight Show") he's reading off a teleprompter for crying out loud. Where's the emotion and where's the humanity?"

Stern relayed his first and only experience on Jay's show saying he went on with two lesbians and Leno walked off his own set. "I knew it wouldn't last," Stern said of the man who hosted the "Tonight Show" for 17 years.

Howard Stern is "responsible" for 90% of what you see on TV.

Whether you like "him" or not, his humor, style, and ideas have been used over and over again to where his influence on TV is almost inescapable.

Forget the obvious ones, like the reality TV shows that were based totally on bits he's done or the bits that Jay Leno and his ilk have stolen from him....even sitcoms, I have seen whole episodes or whatnot based on bits or conversations from his show.

Even if you don't like him, 95% of TV writers do and they use his stuff ALL the time.

Usually, when someone calls him a "shock" jock or trailer trash, they have never listened to him and are merely stereotyping...such a non-liberal thing to do, really...

"howard stern hates on leno"

What kind of headline is this?

Does this "reporter" know proper english?

Is ebonics acceptable now in online journalism?

Maybe you should consider hiring people that have more than a GED.... it's embarrassing

Being extremely uptight is probably more embarrassing.

This would not be ebonics, but just street lingo. The Ebonic way would be closer to, Howard Stern be haten' on Leno. The verb to be plays an important role in Ebonics.

This has been your Ebonics grammer lesson for the day.

Leno doesn't offend me, but he's never been worth the time to watch. Letterman was often great with his Late Late Show many years ago, but went quickly downhill when he moved to 11:30. After the monologues/comedy bits both shows resorted to lame puff interviews with vapid celebrities pitching their latest crap movies, records, TV shows.

Sour, narcissistic, grapes. What a schill for sat. radio Stern became. He's still peeved that his top flunky actually grew up, grew a pair and defected to Leno (John Melendez)

...and I'm still peeved I sunk a good chunk of loot into sat. radio stocks to support him.

Sour grapes all around.

Conan rules, period. Letterman...i get my fix of him on YouTube from 20 years ago when he was cutting edge.

Stern is a joke anyway, he is the trailer trash and classless one. At least Leno and Conan got real jobs, they are not shock jocks like him who gets nothing but trashy and nasty people like prostitutes, porno hos and deviants. He is the sicko.

Stern is correct - Leno is not funny.

He contributes to the dumbing down of society.

eff him.

It is actually Stern who is not funny, DC. His stuff got tired ages ago.

Well -- no. It didn't. It may seem so only because people who had no sense of humor ages ago still have no sense of humor.

He was paid in stock, that is pretty much worthless at this point. Love his wig, though.

Ah, the lesbian bit. Funny story...I was at a conference back in the 90's where Leno's head writer was the speaker. A very dry guy, he related the story about what happened, and said "apparently Howard hid the lesbians in the bathroom...I wonder how he got them in there in the first place."

No laugh.

I turned around to the people I was sitting with and said "yeah, and I wonder how he got them OUT of the bathroom!"

The joke spread quickly, and soon I had a bigger rolling laugh going.

I will say this, though. I learned why Leno had his job that day. The writer told a couple jokes he'd written, and got a few chuckles. Then he played the tape of Leno telling the same jokes, and the room cracked up.

Dave's show has become virtually unwatchable, with Conan not much better. There is a serious lacking of talent on the tube these days. Seriously,,,Tim Russert is the last guy I can think of who actually made a difference on TV. Kinda sad.

I used to feel that way too, until I realized I was the one becoming
smarter-TV shows always appeal to the masses with a 5th grade mentality.

Watch the Daily Show on Comedy Central. Jon Stewart is current, smart and funny. A show for people with brains....

Stern choked.

Psychologically, it's so interesting. Countless hours as a broadcaster, yet he can still fall so awkwardly apart.

It's sort of endearing, in a way. On radio, unseen, the confidence comes. Confronted with national television, prime time, and a venerable comedic heavyweight, he crumbles. The attempt to do a little Bill Murray pep-talk shtick... well, it comes off as completely amateur-hour shaky. Forced. Unsteady. Uncertain. Letterman doesn't want to knock him down even further, you can tell, but clearly wishes the whole sorry spectacle would just hurry up and be over.

Sad but, worse, tedious to see a such desperate clown drown.

If Letterman so desperately wanted it to be over, why did he hold Howard over through a second commercial break for a thrid stretch? That's very rare, and it's at Dave's discretion. Obviously, he wanted more time with Howard.
I do agree, though, that Howard gets very self-conscious and awkward on TV. It's curious considering how natural and effortless he is on the radio, and considering how long he's been in the game. After all these years, Howard is still only comfortable on his home turf.
BTW, the show is better on satellite than it ever was on terrestrial radio; it's far and away the best thing the medium of radio has ever known, and is superior to almost everything on television as well. I suspect that the large majority of Howard-bashers have had very little, if any, actual exposure to his show.
