PARIS — A red notebook of 33 pencil drawings by Pablo Picasso has been stolen from a specially locked glass case in the Paris museum that bears the painter's name, authorities said Tuesday.

The book is believed to be worth 8 million euros ($11 million), a police official said.

The theft took place between Monday and Tuesday morning at the Picasso Museum, removed from a glass case that "can only be opened with a specific instrument," the Culture Ministry said.

A museum employee discovered the notebook missing Tuesday morning from the second-floor display case, the police official said anonymously, as police are not authorized to discuss cases publicly. The museum is closed on Tuesdays.

There was no surveillance system in the room where the notebook was displayed, the police official said.

The stolen sketchbook, shiny red with the word "Album" inscribed in gold on the front, dated from 1917 to 1924, the Culture Ministry statement said. It measured 6.3 inches by 9.5 inches (16 by 24 centimeters).

The Picasso Museum, in Paris' old Marais neighborhood, is dedicated to the Spanish-born painter, a founder of the Cubist movement and leading 20th-century artist.

In August 2007, French investigators recovered two Picasso paintings and a drawing worth a total of more than $66 million stolen from the home of the artist's granddaughter in an overnight heist six months earlier. Two of three suspects later arrested were carrying the rolled-up canvases as police closed in. Police had been tipped off by an art dealer after the theft at the luxury Paris apartment of Diana Widmaier-Picasso and suspected the thieves were looking to sell their loot.

One of the paintings, "Maya and the Doll," shows Widmaier-Picasso's mother as a young girl in pigtails. The other recovered painting, "Portrait of Jacqueline," depicts Picasso's second wife, Jacqueline Roque.

In 1994, seven Picasso paintings worth an estimated $44 million were stolen from a Zurich gallery. They were recovered in 2000, and a Swiss man and two Italians were jailed for the theft. The stolen paintings included Picasso's "Seated Woman," and "Christ of Montmartre," which had been stolen from the gallery once before, in 1991.

The market for stolen art is valued in the billions of dollars annually.

PICASSO'S STUFF IS SO IMITATIVE AND SO YESTERDAY; HOWEVER, HE GETS HIGH
MARKS FOR AMBITION, LIKE MOST OF THE WELL KNOWN NAMES IN THE ART GAME...
MY PROBLEM IS WITH THEFT PER SE, NOT THE MARKET VALUE OF THIS MISSING BOOK...
WHO CARES?

The Picasso Museum is the most underrated Museum in Paris.

To discover Picasso in this Museum is to be stunned by the breadth of his talent and the depth of his career.

What does it mean when a sketch book is worth millions. Artists, like everyone, want to get paid, but it's seems that we have inflated intangible value beyond anything reasonable,
Juist a little philosophical Tuesday musings.

picasso was a singular talent. there was only one picasso and a finite amount of work was produced. the uniqueness and rarity of such items equate to value and worth.

I found the missing sketches. I had to deciede whether or not to turn them in or use them as toilet paper. The toilet paper won.

My high school art teacher used to live with Picasso back in the day. Kind of mind-blowing to imagine having that experience.

I could never understand what makes Picasso's art work so great. Looks like work done by a 5 year old.

Yes, all good art must only look like Thomas Kinkade! Let's have a specific idea for what good art should look like!! Kind of defeats the purpose no?

What do you consider good art? Grafitti could be good art. Do I need a degree from some fancy art school or yuppy college to like a piece of art? Like I told the other knuckle.head, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Several years ago when looking at one of his ubiquitous vases filled with flowers in campus dorms, I thought the same--until my introduction to his blue period. Seminal.

What is with all these chain of robberies for expensive things in Paris? Just a couple of weeks ago, Chopard had millions of jewelry stolen in broad daylight and the same thing at Harry Winston by men dressed in drag a few months back. Dang Paris, get your security in order.

How can somebody just walk away with Picasso originals from a museum? It does make you wonder how much of the stuff on display there is actually originals. Business is business.

went to that museum a few yrs ago.. it was the most laxed/un-efficient looking security i'd ever seen in a major museum.. no shock here... and lots of paintings looked like fake picassos on the wall.. quite disappointing.. it was after that i think i started being less of a fan.. altho, still love lots of picassos, just not everything..

Who steals art?

The black market must be thriving for this kind of thing.
