The Hollywood Reporter: SHOWBIZ 411:

But the real buzz on Prince is that his much reported hip problems of the past have now turned into need for a double hip replacement.

Unfortunately, thanks to his practice as a Jeohvah's Witness, Prince still refuses surgery. JW's don't believe in blood transfusions.

They have a machine that will take any blood you've lost during surgery, scrub it with saline, then put it back into to you. But there's also autodonation which I what I did before my surgery.

Couldn't he just bank his own blood for the surgery? Then he would not be getting blood from someone else.

I'm surprised that someone as tiny and light as he is would need hip replacement surgery.

...until you realize that he's spent the better part of 30 years jumping off 6 ft. speakers while wearing four-inch heels.

I always love seeing people's religious get in the way of their health and well being.

If this is an accurate description of his medical problem, then I wish him well. He will be in a wheelchair at some point in the not to distant future because he will be unable to bear weight on those joints. If any of this is true, of course.

That's what a lifetime of wearing high heels will do for you.

taking pain pills isn't going to cure you instantly, prince.stop being harded and get the surgey because your life is more important than your career.or else you will be a wheelchair before you're sixy years old.

Mom is JW.. Don't always need blood transfusions in surgery.
Secondly, he is allowed to transfused his on blood just as long as it isn't someone else.

Sounds like a made up or exaggerated story

Good point - can't you set aside your own blood ahead of time?

OK, nvm - answered below. You COULD, but your blood MIGHT get lost, & then...

Someone, 'don't eat blood' means the same as transfusions, which apparently were big in Biblical times.

I don't know if part of it is made up or exaggerated, but he himself turned devout JW a few years back--he said so himself in an interview.

I work in the medical field and it is soooooo frustrating to deal with JW, Christian Scientists, etc., who come in with the worst problems and either won't let you do anything about them or wait till the problems are nontreatable before they'll consider anything.

Prince needs hip replacements--this is official proof all us 80s kids are over the hill.

I know a guy in his early 40s who had one hip replaced. He's back on the ice playing hockey with no problem. My advice to Prince would be to do this as early in life as possible because things get more complicated for older people. He's gonna be glad he did it after its over, like my friend was.

That's relatively young for this type of surgery. He should recover quite well and quickly if he does it soon.

He turned 51 a few days ago. That's young for a hip replacement.

Actually, physicians usually try to postpone joint replacements in young people. The joints do have to be replaced after a decade or so.

Could this be the result of years of shaking those hips in his business?

Huh? Since surgery is cutting someone open how can you do it without shedding blood?

My aunt just had this procedure and she didn't need a transfusion. I'm sure the hospital was prepared, just in case, but nothing went wrong. When my mom had her knee replacement, she didn't need a transfusion either.
