I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Ted Danson narrates "The End Of The Line," a grim look at overfishing and the state of the world's oceans. He talks about the movie and what we can do to start helping the ocean now:

Fish are like any other commodity. When they become scarce, the price will go up, reducing the demand and the ocean will replenish.

Tell that to all the unemployed Newfoundland cod fishermen. As they say..."Everybody got too greedy for them fish, 'en then there wasn't anything a'tall."

Like any commodity that gets scarce fish will transform from an affordable commodity for many to a delicacy for the rich who will pay whatever they have to because they can. If a fisherman can go out and catch a few fish that he can sell for a lot, he will go out. Frankly, fishermen will fish at a loss for as long as they can just because they like fishing, and they will use whatever method they have to no matter how much it ruins the environment for other species they don't want.

Since this is an international problem with no clear jurisdictions and VERY ingrained lifestyle/cultural issues related to it, it would take decades to negotiate a sensible compromise.

We don't have the luxury of time. That leave only unpleasant options on the table.
