Holocaust Museum Shooting In Washington D.C.

WASHINGTON — An 88-year-old gunman with a violent and virulently anti-Semitic past opened fire with a rifle inside the crowded U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday, fatally wounding a security guard before being shot himself by other officers, authorities said.

The assailant was hospitalized in critical condition, leaving behind a sprawling investigation by federal and local law enforcement and expressions of shock from the Israeli government and a prominent Muslim organization.

Washington Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the gunman was "engaged by security guards immediately after entering the door" with a rifle. "The second he stepped into the building he began firing."

Law enforcement officials said James W. von Brunn, a white supremacist, was under investigation in the shooting and that his car was found near the museum and tested for explosives. The weapon was a .22-caliber rifle, they added. They spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss the investigation just beginning.

When von Brunn was captured he possessed a list he had made of lawmakers on Capitol Hill, according to another law enforcement officer who requested anonymity. The purpose of the list was not immediately clear, the official said.

The dead guard, Stephen Tyrone Johns, 39, was a six-year veteran of the facility who lived in Temple Hills, Md. Museum Director Sara Bloomfield said he "died heroically in the line of duty."

At the White House, just blocks away from the museum, President Barack Obama said: "This outrageous act reminds us that we must remain vigilant against anti-Semitism and prejudice in all its forms. No American institution is more important to this effort than the Holocaust Museum, and no act of violence will diminish our determination to honor those who were lost by building a more peaceful and tolerant world."

Von Brunn has a racist, anti-Semitic Web site and wrote a book titled "Kill the Best Gentiles," alleging a Jewish conspiracy "to destroy the white gene pool." Writings attributed to von Brunn on the Internet say the Holocaust was a hoax. "At Auschwitz the 'Holocaust' myth became Reality, and Germany, cultural gem of the West, became a pariah among world nations," one says.

In 1983, he was convicted of attempting to kidnap members of the Federal Reserve Board and served more than six years in prison. He was arrested two years earlier outside the room where the board was meeting, carrying a revolver, knife and sawed-off shotgun. At the time, police said von Brunn wanted to take the members hostage because of high interest rates and the nation's economic difficulties.

The museum, which opened in 1993 and has drawn nearly 30 million visitors, houses exhibits and records relating to the Holocaust of more than a half century ago in which more than 6 million Jews died at the hands of Nazis. Its Web site says the museum "teaches millions of people each year about the dangers of unchecked hatred and the need to prevent genocide."

The museum was crowded with schoolchildren and other tourists at the time of the attack, but they all escaped injury in the outburst of violence.

Ashley Camp, 14, of Forsyth, Ill., on a field trip with more than 40 other students, said she heard two or three gunshots. Soon after, she recalled, a security guard ordered the group to run to the exit.

"We had to sprint as fast as we could out the door," she said. "I thought it was the movie (part of a museum exhibit), but then everyone started screaming and running."

The attack was the third in a recent wave of unsettling shootings that appeared to have political or ethnic underpinnings.

A 23-year-old Army private, William Andrew Long, was shot and killed outside a recruiting office this month in Arkansas and a fellow soldier was wounded. The suspect, a Muslim convert, has said he considers the killing justified because of the U.S. military presence in the Middle East.

Late last month, abortion provider Dr. George Tiller was shot to death in his church.

Johns, the security guard killed Wednesday, was black.

Only last week, Obama visited the site of a German concentration camp at Buchenwald in Germany where he noted, "There are those who insist the Holocaust never happened." He added, "This place is the ultimate rebuke to such thoughts, a reminder of our duty to confront those who would tell lies about our history."

In a statement from Israel's government, Information and Diaspora Minister Yuli Edelstein said the shooting was "further proof that anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial have not passed from the world."

And the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a prominent American Muslim organization, said in a statement, "We condemn this apparent bias-motivated attack and stand with the Jewish community and with Americans of all faiths in repudiating the kind of hatred and intolerance that can lead to such disturbing incidents."

Within minutes after the attack, federal agents were dispatched to von Brunn's condominium in Annapolis, Md., to check his computer. A neighbor, Harold Olynnger, said in an interview that he and his wife had not been allowed back in their condo since early afternoon because agents feared the suspect's home might contain explosives.

Joseph Persichini, assistant director in charge of the Washington FBI field office, said the shootings were being investigated as a possible hate crime or a case of domestic terrorism.

According to a relative, von Brunn attended Washington University in St. Louis and is an artist.

Navy records show von Brunn enlisted in 1942 as an apprentice seaman before accepting an appointment as a naval midshipmen in the volunteer reserves in March 1943. On his application for enlistment, the 21-year-old listed his reason for signing up as "patriotic." His records show he had language qualifications in both English and French after spending three years in college. He was discharged from the Navy in 1956.

A cousin, Virginia Gerker of St. Louis, said in an interview she hadn't seen him in 50 years. She said her family had "disowned" him and believed him to be mentally ill.

About a dozen years ago, he applied to have his art shown at a gallery in Easton, Md., according to two of the owners. Laura Era and Jennifer Wharton said they rejected his work and he stomped out.

Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center said von Brunn's Web site has long been listed as a hate site.

"We've been tracking this guy for decades," said Heidi Beirich, director of research for the law center's Intelligence Project, which tracks hate crimes. "He thinks the Jews control the Federal Reserve, the banking system, that basically all Jews are evil."

The Rev. David Ostendorf, executive director of the Center for a New Community in Chicago, a national civil rights group, said von Brunn has described in his own writings a long relationship with Willis Carto, founder of the Liberty Lobby, the Spotlight Newspaper and a well-known white supremacist and anti-Semite.

This issue goes much deeper than just hatred and prejudice. Sure there are a lot of nutcases out there spewing hatred but they don't act on it until they see folks like O'Reilly, Limbaugh or Coulter. Then feel empowered to act out there hatred. I think the biggest issue that should be addressed is the hate rhetoric being thrown around by these bigots and others. These folks are partly to blame for this sort of situation. The "republicans" are being minimized because fhe folks that express this sort of hatred often associate themselves with that party. If you look at the past election results you will see that the states that McCain won were either appalachian or southern..... hotbeds of racism. They try to cover it ups with words like, "I don't trust him" or "He's Muslim", etc. Thost are simply veiled racist comments. The core issue with these racists is that Obama is black. They can use any language they want to deny that because outwardly, it would make them look bad if they admitted it. Inwardly the hatred is still there but the individual then uses "coded" unconscious statements like those above. They don't even have the courage to admit the truth behind their comments.......racism. Those who ideas have been outgrown and dropped are currently fighting as hard as they can to be heard. Is this what the US brings to the world......the right to encourage the murder of others? I hope not.

While any and all violent deaths are a tragedy for the families involved, I am starting to believe less and less of what is printed in the mainstream press due to biased reporting on both sides of the aisle, and really do believe such incidences are used for political purposes most of all. The man was 89 years old, for heaven's sake, and dementia more than anything else could have been involved. And why would a man that was a Holocaust denier ever have enlisted in World War II to begin with?

This entire story sounds as fishy as the doctor's murder in Kansas City, and really coincidental that as Obama is pushing in order to again effectively institute German and Canada's "hate speech" legislation and quash forms of free speech, in addition to controlling the internet, three such incidents happening and being widely reported in liberal press within three weeks is suspect to begin with.

Unbelieveable how the liberals were so vocal with their hate speech against Bush and everything and anything Christian, Obama and this stuff also gets attacked while not even questioning the details.

Truly unbelieveable, since at 89, this man most likely was losing his marbles somewhat to begin with, since dementia (which is now politically correctly called "Alzheimer's), usually starts in most instances after 80.

Sadly, the incident at the Holocaust Memorial Museum touched me deeply, as I am Jewish. As to all that I have heard about the gunman, I am wondering how on earth could he ever get his hands on a weapon? I personally feel that the Second Amendment needs to be revised for it's original purpose/meaning has truly been abused. Is it sound judgment for those suffering from mental disorders, or those who have hate and prejudice (for all to see on a personal website, as this gunman) or ex-cons, to bear arms?

This incident at the museum was so uncalled for - just as other incidents, such as recently Dr. George Tiller I would really like to know when a good portion of people in this world are going to wake up and get over hate and prejudice regarding religion, race, abortion, sexual orientation, etc., etc. Are we not ALL human? Tragically, it appears that many may not be. I am astounded as to how much hate and resentment there is in this world. Of course, we are entitled to our opinions, but attacking another/others is all too petty and sick nonsense. I am not wanting to lecture, but it wouldn't hurt for those that have such animosity, to really reflect on self and learn to love and accept self first and foremost for that's the only way that we can ALL start getting along together in this world.

-adding to my post above-:

It seems that too much negativity has been said about President Barack Obama -----why? He is truly a very caring man who is trying to bring good changes to the U.S, and to the world - he is a true Peacemaker! Ugly need not come about as Republicans, and others, have done nothing but spew hate and lies against him, as well as certain media and a particular radio talk show host speaking poorly about Jews, Latinos, etc., thus, it's no wonder that domestic violence ensues. With all this going on right in our own backyard (here in the U.S.A.) why would one even worry about those in foreign lands expressing their disgust for Americans?

I would think that by now, in the year 2009, humans would be more evolved. I still find it so amazing that so many years ago a very young person, in hiding, fearing for her life, could be so enlightened to quote "Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart." (by Anne Frank) - To believe in that, one could only surmise that she loved self, and carried no hate, prejudice or resentment in her mind, heart and soul. She is someone to really admire and learn from.

There are those that are openly calling for the overthrow of a democratically elected president, inciting violence against health care providers, calling on citizens to neglect their constitutional responsibility to pay taxes, openly calling for our leaders to fail, attacking comedianes, contemplating states withdrawing from the union, denying citizens the right to health care and more...

There is a word for this: its called sedition.

For the good of this country and the future of our world, we need to act now to stop this before it gets worse.

Free Speech aside, you can not yell FIRE in a crowded theater without being held accountable for the result. Even when no one is hurt, your actions are STILL hel accountable for the POSSIBLE result of harm.

We need to uphold this standard and apply it to those that are instigating this violence.

Came home at 6:45, turned to Cable news....MSNBC and CNN all had this story going full blast....tuned to FOX---NADA! WHY? We can assume that its a breaking story that they could not spin in their favor or they had an Ooops! moment. One of our solid Fan base crazies went berserk finally. Just as we hoped? I dunno. Didn't have their talking points ready in defense of this Nazi lover, criminal of the Far right. Just saying.......hmmmmm.

The best they could do was have Beck take the stage and try to link, through mention of "unverified reports" (fabricated COMPLETELY, of course) that this nut was also a "hero" of the 911Truth movement, a consortium of the most intelligent (for the most part!), ANTI-violent people! Ha! Is that the best they can do?? Von Brunn was completely unheard of, from all accounts I searched on 9/11 sites. I guess it is just Faux trying to deflect their own culpability onto some sort of mortal enemy of their skewed, vicious and lying world. Welcoming news and truth with a kick in the butt!

The shooter is the face of the GOP and the NRA. Nice going guys.

Maybe we need to start some selective detainments before this thing gets out of hand (if it already hasn't).

Mark my words: The conservative right wing base is planning for a war. Their talking heads have been instigating this type of violence for the past few years. The fruits of their labor are coming home to roost.

All I am saying is be watchful of your neighbors.

The root cause that is bringing out all of these lunatics is the constant “Hate Talk” and name calling that you hear everyday coming from the right-wing radio and TV commentators. Yes it's free speech, but it's not good speech! It's hateful and insightful and believe me, this is just the beginning! Until you can reign in the lunatics on the radio and ban some of the hate filled, racist websites, there is going to be more violence especially in these economic times. Newt Gingrich does not set a good example. He should know better more that Hannity, O’Reilly, and Limbaugh…he should know better! And it seems like since Tiller the doctor was killed and now this racist at the Holocaust Museum, everyone seems to have forgotten about the 3 police officers that were killed by the right wing gun loving lunatic in Pittsburg who said Obama was taking his guns. IT’S GOING TO GET WORSE! It is time for law enforcement led by the DOJ to start coming down hard, real hard and start enforcing those hate crime laws. Because if anyone ever hurts or kills President Obama, Lord help us all it will be a civil nightmare of the worst proportions. All hell will break loose like never before. The whole world is watching this.

This murderous white assassin is euphemistically referred to as a white supremacist by the US media and everyone else there. His crime is regarded as his own; his community or the wider white community isn't stigmatized, demonized, subjected to profiling or collectively punished for it; neither are they required to wear sackcloth and ashes and apologize for it.

Had he been Muslim, with or without the same track record, he would be instantly branded a terrorist, his entire community and all US Muslims would automatically be singled out for the most vicious treatment that could be meted out to them.

Meanwhile, lip service is made to the black security guard who gave his life for what all of you including Barack designate a noble cause. This reminds one of the noble savage who in the good old days of Hollywood would see the white man to the Promised Land after his tribulations in some God forsaken foreign land but racist US conventions would never allow that Black to get there with him, and so the scriptwriters always ensured this Black had an appropriate death.

Had this black man been killed by this white racist at a nondescript petrol station or elsewhere his life and death wouldn’t have warranted a single column inch or a footnote in a news broadcast.

Wolf Blitzer on 6/10 confidently said that everyone will remember where they were when this attack took place. Really? Athough the subliminal message is clear.

I wish they would just move out. Since they hate it when they lose, they should just leave the building. I was not happy with what they did to America in the eight years that Bush was president, and from the latest congressional and presidential election results, I was not alone.
10:14 AM on 06/11/2009
Why is pointing out that fact making a joke? It serves to counter the fervent 'blame the GOP' idiocy that is prevalent here. If anyone can't take this situation seriously and objectively, it's the vast majority of liberal posters here who are using this to bash conservatives, Christians, and the GOP

Repeat: Eight years of validation and encouragement.

Only a naif would overlook the impact of eight years of lawless thuggery, celebration of "might makes right", "my way or the highway" foreign policy, circumvention of fundamental Constitutional safeguards, transparent legitimization of torture and -- most importantly -- objectification and dehumanization of the "other".

Ever heard of "nurture" and its effect on behavior? To the von Brunns of society, the Bush/Cheney rampage was a validation of all their worst impulses.

If von Brunn is suffering from "dementia", the onset occurred decades ago... or haven't you read his history?

Cause and effect? Probably unprovable.

Pure co-inky-dinky?

Not hardly.

I remember him from a couple of years back - he and the female security guard left the building and stopped me on the sidewalk as I was walking past outside because I had been filming at the Lincoln Monument, and still had the camera with me, though turned off.
They asked me to stay a block away with the camera.

With vigilance like that, I can say that he must have been caught by surprise today.
