Sodium cyclamate: An artificially prepared salt of cyclamic acid, C6H12NO3SNa, used as a low-calorie sweetener. Was banned in US for twenty years, still seen as controversial, has been banned in Britain, other places.
Let's leave it to the scientists whether that stuff is carcinogenic or not, time will probably tell. It is controversial, that much is clear. So, while we do not know whether it's true that Coca-Cola did include that in the Venezuelan drink when it can do happily without in the US, it is still perfectly okay to call the Venezuelan Ministry of Health crazy? To write articles citing 'unspecified reasons' in some thinly concealed attempt to make Hugo Chavez look bad, just because it suits someone's prejudice?

Approximately 10% of aspartame (by mass) is broken down into methanol in the small intestine. Most of the methanol is absorbed and quickly converted into formaldehyde and then to formic acid. Some opponents of aspartame have falsely claimed that this in turn causes metabolic acidosis. The metabolism of aspartame does not damage the body because: (a) the quantity of methanol produced is too small to disrupt normal physiological processes; (b) methanol and formaldehyde are natural by-products of human metabolism and are safely processed by various enzymes; (c) there is more methanol in some natural fruit juices and alcoholic beverages than is derived from aspartame ingestion; and (d) even large doses of pure methanol have been shown in non-human primate studies to lead to ample accumulation of formic acid (as formate), while no formaldehyde was detected.
Too much of anything is bad for you. For example, too much water can kill you so it's all relative. Aspartame is 180 times sweeter than sugar so there is actually very little in diet sodas.:: Wah wah waaah::

No matter your political feelings for Chavez, he's correct about coca-cola products. Poison in a can should not be tolerated. I travel internationally and I am stunned how obese people are here in the U.S.. I do want a government and FDA that protects its' citizens from harmful food products. People will say that it's socialism, I say it's common sense to screen harmful foods and beverages. The FDA is in the pocket of corporate america. I drink only filtered water and try to eat a healthy diet. It's not easy, because most everything in stores are laced with artificial ingedients. It's hard work to eat healthy in the U.S., but it's vitally important in order to maintain good health.
It's unfortunate that large Food/Beverage companies are killing people slowly by filling supermarket shelves with junk and poison.
I buy at local farmers markets whenever possible and try to cook at home from natural ingedients. My health is too important to trust any corporation and their ilk.
I also use only organic products for my laundry and cleaning my home as well as my soap and shampoo. It's just as important what you place on your skin as what you put inside your body.

I would not be so sure on that. It contains high levels of Aspartame, which although granted is not 100% confirmed a danger, does indeed seem to pose several long term health risks for the neurological system.
you're entitled to your opinion. if you want to drink it, that's fine. but people deserve to know the truth about artificial sweeteners. most people don't want to drink toxic chemicals.

Aspartame is toxic, and anyone can read about how Donald Rumsfeld during the Reagan years was the key player in getting this poison approved for consumption by Americans.
Also worth noting is the idea that HFCS (corn syrup) is continually testing positive for mercury because many producers won't spend a few bucks to bring their manufacturing facilities up to date.
The genetically modified corn industry owns Obama as they owned Bush. Their lobbying helps keep the cruel embargo against Cuba going as their nice clean sugar is a threat to our toxic GMO corn syrup producers.
Remember when Coke had the big 'new Coke' promotion with people up in arms asserting their will on one of our corporate giants and winning? Coke had to back down and go back to supplying 'original' Coke, right? Yes and no. They went back to the original with one major change...........sugar was out and corn syrup was in. The classic bright shiny object trick to confuse the people worked. Of course corporate media played along and kept the secret.
This is all easy to confirm if you spend half an hour googling the topic.
Support any small local bottlers who provide old fashioned colas........made with sugar.
You are right Aspertameis very dangerous. It which breaks down into Aspartate which is a neurotransmitter which causes issues with the blood brain barrier, allowing too much of it through which in large enough quantity ends up acting a neurotoxin. During the digestive process, specifically when the breakdown of Aspartame releases methanol in the small intestine, which in turn becomes formaldehyde then formic acid. Formaldehyde is very dangerous to the body.
It shows a lack of competence on the part of the FDA that it was apoved.

If I were Coca Cola, I would be thrillllllled with this. I'd start making ads about how coke zero is so American that extreme anti-american socialists ban it.

I'm sure the people of Venezuela are thrilled that they no longer have to think for themselves about what cokes they will drink. It's disturbing that so many people on this board would like to have concerned bureaucrats making the drink choices for them.
Exactly. The common thread to most of these comments is "I can't trust myself, so I want the government to be my nanny and ban all the things that *might* be bad for me."
Or actually more like, "I'm a reasonably informed consumer but don't have time or resources to research all food products, therefore I want the government to make sure information presented by corporations is factual and their products safe for me and mine to consume."
And to get even with the Venezuelans for banning Coke Zero, the United States today banned cocaine.
