Speaking at a town hall in Green Bay Wisconsin, President Barack Obama addressed head on what is the hot debate of the day: whether a health reform overhaul should include a public option for health insurance.

"I also strongly believe that one of the options in the exchange should be a public insurance option," Obama declared, in what was one of his most forceful statements of support since the health care debate began. "And the reason is not because we want a government takeover of health care. I've already said, if you've got a private plan that works for you, that's great. But we want some competition. If the private insurance companies have to compete with a public option, it will keep them honest and it will help keep their prices down."

The remarks came just several hours after the American Medical Association said it would oppose a public option for coverage. But in a reflection of just how delicate this debate has become, the 250,000 member physician group largely backtracked from its opposition later in the day.

"Make no mistake: health reform that covers the uninsured is AMA's top priority this year," a clarifying statement from the group read. "Every American deserves affordable, high-quality health care coverage.

"Today's New York Times story creates a false impression about the AMA's position on a public plan option in health care reform legislation. The AMA opposes any public plan that forces physicians to participate, expands the fiscally-challenged Medicare program or pays Medicare rates, but the AMA is willing to consider other variations of the public plan that are currently under discussion in Congress. This includes a federally chartered co-op health plan or a level playing field option for all plans. The AMA is working to achieve meaningful health reform this year and is ready to stand behind legislation that includes coverage options that work for patients and physicians."

While not directly addressing AMA's position on the public plan, the president did offer what seemed to be a subtle dig at the group's seemingly conflicting objectives. AMA's mission has been health care coverage for all, but it has also opposed every major attempt at a systematic overhaul since the FDR administration.

"Doctors didn't get into the medical profession to be bean counters or paper pushers," Obama said in his early remarks, underscoring the bureaucratic problems that exists in the status quo. "They are not interested in spending all their time acting like lawyers or business executives."

Later in the question and answer session, Obama directly addressed the political component of the debate over the public option, gently calling out critiques for misrepresenting the plan's objectives.

"Now, how this debate is evolving in Washington, unfortunately sometimes kinds of falls into the usual politics, right?" the President said. "So, what you've heard is some folks on the other side saying, I'm opposed to a public option because that's going to lead to government running your health care system. Now, I don't know how clearly I can say this, but let me try to repeat it. If you've got health insurance that you're happy with through the private sector, then we're not going to force you to do anything. All we're saying is for the 46 million people who don't have health insurance or for people who have got health insurance like you... let's change some of those incentives so that we get more people getting prevention, more people getting health care to keep them healthy as opposed to just treating them when they get sick. And I think that we can come up with a sensible, commonsense way that's not disruptive, that still has room for insurance companies and the private sector, but that does not put people in the position where they are potentially bankrupt every time they get sick."

The ability of the president to elevate himself above the usual political scrum proved monumentally valuable during the course of the campaign. His appearance at Green Bay on Thursday suggests that the Obama White House thinks it can apply this formula to the health care reform debate. The friendlier turf, they believe, is outside Washington.

You will note that in the Preamble to the Constitution the entire purpose of forming our Nation was to the benifit of "ourselves and our Posterity".
There is no mention of any business or shareholder or corporation.

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

One would suppose that BO had at least seen this document while at Harvard?

IF you look at the number of Baby boomers who are reaching old age and the projected demand of our health care needs, It is outrageous to see the AMA has their decks all ready to reap their money by artificially limiting supply.

OPEN THEN DOOR for foreign Doctors and Nurses and other health care providers so they can compete freely for services that we need.

Do not allow the AMA union to monopolize the health care market.

Physicians are there to look at peoples bodies and their diseases and to recommend and cure the said diseases.

Although their opinions needs to be taken into advisement for public policy on health care and can even set standards for their profession but....they CANNOT be the arbitrator of public policy on health care.

Doctors should have no say in how many medical schools can be opened or which universities can open medical schools or how many medical students can be admitted into a class. That should be the purvey of that school. PERIOD!

Doctors should have no say on immigration policy on how many doctors from abroad can migrate and work here in our country.

Period!

AMA kiIIs patience by restricting supply of doctors by controlling the supply via creating barriers of entry into the professions.

DO NOT RESTRICT the seats in medical schools. Build bigger facility to accommodate American kids who have good grades to become doctors.

All all US universities to open Medical schools without the meddlesome AMA in the picture that has consistently restricted new Medical schools

Provide scholarships and low interest loans for American Children who want to become doctors but can't afford them. THIS is so much more productive than welfare and competition barriers for practicing physicians.

Personal story: Had a car accident, the guy who hit me had a $25,000 State sponsor insurance, When I got it, In Washington , DC, I had to pay my Health care Provider $15,000 in medical expenses and a third to a lawyer, even though I pay nearly $700.00 a month in premiums, and have been with this HMO for near;y twenty years, And I had under insured motorist protection in my policy, for which I had to hire a Lawyer to get from my insurance company, the Lawyer took a third of the money I received, nearly four years after the accident. I still take pain medication and pay my health care provider. I think over the years I've lost plenty in this deal.

If universal Health Care pass this year, do you think that some future administration will be able to undo it, what do you think? if we had universal health care as we see in Canada, France, England, and the people of this country get a taste of the burden of health care lifted off their shoulders, What political party would be able to dismantle it?

The AMA has managed to keep barriers to entry into the profession by restricting the number of medical school and supply of doctors.

I'm glad to see someone say that. The number of seats in medical schools are restricted specifically to keep the income of doctors up. We have many people who would love to become doctors, who have excellent grades and qualifications, who can't get into US medical schools. Whatever plan we go with, doubling the number of medical school seats ought to be part of the plan.

I know. No other professions. Engineers, IT folks etc have such artificial barriers. These socialistic programs for Doctors to keep their wages/income artificially high should be stopped ASAP.

IF you can increase the H!B and greencard to IT Professionals to ease burden in our country. Do the same for medicine.

If free market works for other industry, it works for medical field as well.

Do not give US doctors socialist protection.

Open the doors wide open so cost of doctor vist drops to $10. This way the ones who want to be doctors to help people will remain the profession and the one who believe they can't make loads of money can join Wallstreet instead.

We need to demand MSM launch a SERIOUS debate on the state of our health care system, comparing it to each and every one of the other industrialized countries, one by one, pros and cons. No country has a fool-proof system, and there'll be always something we won't like in whatever model we pick or create. But it should be the result of serious study and analysis, not on soundbites such as 'socialized medicine' or any such nonsense. The public needs to be informed and educated on this. Not entertained, or fear-mongered.

HuffPost can start by creating a dedicated page for Health Care Reform, listing all the other industrialized countries' health care system, how they did it, if it's private or public or hybrid, strengths and weaknesses of each, challenges each faces, etc. Make a giant table, so readers can easily compare. It's like buying a new car and do comparison shopping. If enough Americans get this kind of real information, then the debate could move from do we want to reform our health care system, to which model do we pick from all these living samples? How do we make ours better, more efficient and provide better quality care? How did other countries pay for theirs and can we do something similar?

PBS has already aired such an excellent program, maybe they should beef it up with more details and air them repeatedly and try to reach more audience.

What eviI is behind this? The AMA! Thats who.

Why would they prevent more doctors? Why would they restrict supply of doctors for us? That is UN AMERICAN!
