For those who are so uninformed as to be surprised about the obvious Chavez's position on the subject of Iran's election - here is the information (in spanish) from VTV - nowadays one of the government's propaganda tools:
http://www.vtv.gov.ve/noticias-internacionales/19570

and from aporrea - another well known chavista site:

Poor Hugo, you don't realize that only the republicans think you are okay with being a dictator. We don't mind that you undermine us, but when you openly call BS on democracy in another land, you show your true stripes. Getting scared are you?

While it's not outside the realm of possibilty, I do find this story implausible and (as noted below) there really isn't any confirmation that this came from anywhere credible -- YNet is a pro-Israeli outlet that's worked hand in hand with the neocon agenda. Iran will continue to be allies with Venezuela, all things being equal, no matter who wins Iran's election.

And even so? This wasn't exactly an endorsement. He wished a friend luck,he didn't make the case for why Ahmedinejad should win reelection. Frankly this isn't even plausible -- Chavez is for gay rights, for instance, while Ahmedinejad is against them. The /only/ thing they have in common is they've been targetted by the West because they are are heads of state in oil rich countries that don't kowtow to globalized big business.

Here's the story as reported in Spanish in "El Universal," whose accuracy I can't vouch for but it would be quite the conspiracy to have this made up and repeated world wide, especially in Spanish where it's easy to refute.

"And even so?" Cheer leading for the the conservative faction of a theocracy? Calling Ahmedinejad a "friend of Venezuela" and "un valiente luchador en defensa de la revolución islámica (a brave fighter for the Islamic revolution)" ?? Ahmedinejad is a friend of reaction, utter counter-revolution, and is neither a friend of Venezuela nor any progressive anywhere. I'm deeply disappointed (again) in Chavez and I hope that this report proves to be a fraud, but that seems unlikely.

Could be worse. Chavez could have been buddy buddy with Musharraf. Or Bush.

actually the story might not be so far fetched, Ahmadinejad and Chavez enjoy a very good relationship (not to mention, a common enemy).

Except Chavez WANTS to be friends with America.

Kind of. More than you can really say for Ahmadinejad, though.

I can't find this story at AP. Has anyone else found it? Thanks in advance.

Both of the above attribute the same story to A.P. There are numerous newspapers that picked up the story as AP written (google: chavez/ahmadinejad/election).The A.P. website doesn't return any matches that I tried, though.

What a ridiculous twosome those guys make. Chavez depends on American imperialism to stay in power ironically enough. He's no alternative though, just a sad little poser pimping on the aspirations of the Venezuelan poor. Chavez tragically missed the opportunity to lay a democratic foundation for the oppressed in his country, and here he is championing the most reactionary candidate in another.

Chavez is F'n nuts. He wants to be Presidente for life. Just watch, some day soon there will be a more popular candidate than Chavez and he'll destroy their constitution to stay in power.
