LONDON — First came the hug, then a guided tour of Buckingham Palace.

First Lady Michelle Obama, on a visit to London last week, got permission from Queen Elizabeth II for a guided tour of the palace with her daughters, Sasha and Malia.

They were shown around the queen's official residence and its gardens and the queen herself greeted them afterward, according to a royal source who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was private.

In April, during a visit to Britain with her husband, Michele Obama made a warm impression on the queen _ so much so that the monarch strayed from protocol and briefly wrapped her arm around the first lady in a rare public show of affection. The first lady also put her arm around the monarch.

Nobody ever complained when Laura Bush went and visited other countries. I wish you people with your pent up racisim would take a look at yourselves.

I love reading a feel good story occasionally. What a treat for the Obama children.

Now THIS is how I like the USA to be represented on the world stage.

I was just in London and whenever ANYONE found out we were from the States and lived in Chicago - cab drivers, relatives, people at tourist places, everywhere- all they wanted to talk about was the Obamas. I did not hear a single negative comment from anyone in the UK in the 3 weeks we were there. Opinion varied on the royal family- most elderly people still had more respect for the monarchy, but younger people either felt that their time was over, or at least they shouldn't be supported by taxpayers. Most people seemed to be fond of the Queen, in the way you feel about a strict old aunt- they seem to know that she will be the last of the old-style monarchs. Not one person we spoke with likes Prince Charles, for various reasons. They all despised Camilla and several people said that the hope is that Charles will abdicate in favor of his son, who seemed much more popular. Michelle Obama's picture was all over London magazines and people just were all smiles when they talked about her visit there. That was our first-hand experience just over a month ago.

This is a wonderful story. Seems that the Queen is becoming more human in her old age. Yes, she is a great lady and worked alongside the common folk during WWII . The British people have not forgotten and that is one of the reasons she is held in such high esteem. What a great experience for Malia and Sasha.

You just have to remember that people speak poorly about others for two reasons only: jealousy and envy. The naysayers are just bitter that their reign is over and that nobody seemed to care much about the Bush/Cheney women in this way.

They'll get over it...either that or we can medicate them slowly over time....

There may be another reason people post negatively-- loneliness. Many are just seeking attention. And to some, even bad attention is better than none at all.

The Queen drove an ambulance during WW2. She has witnessed the end of the British Empire and the end of the Soviet empire. She has seen Presidents and Prime Ministers come and go. She is a wise woman who recognizes another when she meets one.

Is it not inspiring that in our modern history we have had so many outstanding and classy first ladies? It can be hoped that the first "first husband" will continue such a great tradition, although that may not be the case. Tod Palin? Oh god (on both counts).

Were you complaining about all the taxpayer money spent to get Bush down to his ranch in Crawford, not to mention all the money spent on security around the ranch for his record number of vacation days? I didn't think so.

Also, I doubt that betty22 complained about the 600 billion plus that Dubya wasted on the Iraq war.

Excuse me???? What a lame comment!

How about the lovely and talented GW Bush family who jetted off to Crawford every summer at least for six weeks vacation....at least!!!! Bush managed to "work" at his job as President about 1/3 of each year.....AND he had never been outside the US before he became President, regardless of the fact that his father was an ambassador! Just a good 'ole boy who had no interest or curiosity about the rest of the world. And look how "WE" are paying for his follies now...have any idea how much the Iraq war is costing us?

Yeah Michelle, bettyboop has been brainwashed enough to believe that money should only go to the richest 1%.
You know, her betters who've convinced her that what's good for them will "trickle down" to her. Eventually. After they've eaten their fill at the trough.

Its beautiful to see leaders
from around the world treat
each other as friends rather
than political stereotypes.
The Queen understands history
and with the Obama's in office,
the Queen might want to help re-start
relations with the U.S. and help
them to succeed-

Weren't all the haters ranting about how inappropriate Michelle had been and how the Queen had been offended by her and the gift of the iPod? Guess this kills that theory. Enjoy the crow, pubs.

Same here. When I read some of these vicious, moronic comments it infuriates me to know that some Americans simply do not grasp how utterly detested around the world your former president was. And it also infuriates me that those same creatures also cannot grasp how relieved and thankful so many of us are for President Obama, the First Family and the new administration.

The same people who were appalled that a commoner such as Michelle would sully the Queen with a touch also had their panties in a wad about Obama's "bow" to the Saudi King Abdullah, the same man with whom W held hands, kissed, and danced the sword.

Michelle Obama is a natural, warm human being, and I believe the Queen recognized this instantly. What did people expect? When your hostess makes a kind gesture, are you supposed to ignore it? Stand like a statue and not return it? NO! You respond in kind.

I love it!
