Ensign

Sen. John Ensign's admission late Tuesday that he had an extramarital affair with a campaign staffer over the course of nine months doesn't seem likely to cause the type of wall-to-wall coverage that similar marital slip-ups have in the past.

But it should, at the very least, re-open the longstanding debate over how much attention should be paid to a politician's personal life. And when it comes to this topic, Ensign's own record of denouncing the affairs and misconducts of other pols could come back to haunt him.

During the height of the scandal surrounding Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky, the Nevada Republican denounced the president's conduct as "an embarrassing moment for the country."

'I think we have to feel very sad for the American people and Hillary and Chelsea,' he said.

Weeks later, Ensign would call on Clinton to resign. "I came to that conclusion recently, and frankly it's because of what he put his whole Cabinet through and what he has put the country through," he was quoted saying at the time. "He has no credibility left," he added.

At the time, Ensign was in a tight Senate race with incumbent Harry Reid, an election he would ultimately end up losing. And he didn't shy away from trying to exploit the moral trip-ups in Clinton's personal life to benefit himself and the GOP.

"It could have a dramatic effect on Democrats like (President Nixon's resignation after the Watergate scandal) had on Republicans in 1974," he said, according to a local AP article from September 14, 1998.

In fact, not only did Ensign envision the Lewinksy affair as a political boon for Republicans, he actively made it an issue in his campaign against Reid. At one point during the campaign, Ensign accused his opponent of having a double standard when it came to politicians and sexual dalliances. Reid, he argued, had been much tougher on former Sen. Robert Packwood -- who resigned from the Senate under allegations of sexual harassment -- than he was with Clinton.

"Before there were hearings on Packwood, Reid said he would vote for his expulsion," Ensign declared, the day after calling for Clinton's resignation. "In 1998, he says we have to wait until all the facts come out on Clinton."

To be fair, Ensign has taken a tough tone with regard to the sexual misconduct of members of his own party also. In 2007, he called fellow Republican Sen. Larry Craig a disgrace and urged the Idaho Republican to resign after Craig was arrested for disorderly conduct after allegedly soliciting sex in a men's airport.

But that issue was framed as a matter of law, not morality. And Ensign was not as tough when it came to Sen. David Vitter's alleged solicitation of prostitutes.

"That's one of the things that I'm proudest about our leadership is the swift action, not only calling for an immediate Senate investigation, ethics investigation, removing him from his committees but also sending the signal to him that it was probably best that he resign," Ensign said to ABC about the Craig matter at the time. As for Vitter, he added, "he has not admitted to anything. The Senate Ethics Committee would have no jurisdiction over him."

In June 2006, Ensign voted for the Federal Marriage Amendment, which would have limited marriage in the United States to unions of one man and one woman.

Are they to so caught up in their privileged lives that they don't care as long as they can keep their cookies? Are all the political wives Stepford wives?

I would not have gone with the verb "whacked" in this headline.

What is "embarrassing" is how the husband of his boinkfest managed to get a $1.7 MILLION MORTGAGE for a Vegas home while making $101,000 as "staff aide" in 2007 during this "embarrassment" . . . and how her SON landed a high paying "staff position" as well . . .

By the way, the public record on that "mortgage" is $1.7 Million at 8% and didn't include maintenance , taxes and upkeep coming out of that $101,000 "income" . . . . musta had a GREAT co-signer . . .

With regard to Ensign's role in the impeachment of Clinton, it would seem to be a clear cut case of hypocracy - of Ensign getting caught in his own web of moral outrage or a 'chickens coming home to roost'.

But I really don't think the GOPs attempt to impeach Clinton had very much to do with the fact that he had an affair. I think that, after year of beating their heads against a well, the GOP found a convenient way of crow-barring their way back into office. They tried to use the fact the Clinton lied about the affair (rather than *had* the affair) to deal the Democrats out of office.

It was just a ruthless grab for power, dress up as moral outrage.

"... he (Jesus) lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." John 8:7

"People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones." unknown

Elected Republicans from Nevada (Ensign), Florida (Mark Foley), Utah (Larry Craig), Louisiana (David Vitter), et al, are obviously mentally challenged and betray not only their spouses and their God with their broken oaths, but the citizens of their states and this country. Shame on you all. You are dirty people, and it is not enough to say "you're only human," when you can take your only-human behinds back to your states as private citizens, and let someone who wants to do the people's business serve.

From a registered voter in Nevada:

You have embarrased our State Senator. Your credibility is shot. At 51 years old, is this the "only" time you have violated the sanctity of your marriage vows? You have sinned Senator, "Thou shalt not covet thy neghbor's wife". Well, maybe they were not your "neighbors", just "good friends". Brings a whole new meaning to "good friends" huh Senator?

Please Senator Ensign, resign today. Nevadans do not want you representing any of us any longer. You belong to the group of liars of thieves. Go back to doctoring animals, and I seriously hope that they will be safe around you.

Primo hypocrite Ensign should continue in public life and be constantly reminded of his hypocrisy as a star in the contemporary version of the Scarlet Letter.

Two phrases should cover it. People in glasses houses, etc............ and, karma. I don't give a flip what they do in their personal life as long as we are talking about consenting adults; that is their problem and the problem of their families, but I care very much about how they run our country and how they listen to the wishes of the people.

Infidelity is a lousy thing to do to your partner, but we elect them to govern - period. If they could do that and be ethical that would be very nice, and pretty unlikely from the looks of things.

But you miss the point completely. It was Ensign's hypocritical statements about Bill Clinton, just like Newt Gingrich that are coming back to bite him where the sun don't shine. And, aren't the Republicans the ones who spout their drivel about American values, that they are the values party?

Sen Ensign will repent, show up on CNN a couple times grasping his wives hand as if he really gives a s*h*it about her (and as if she gives a s*h*it about him), head to church this Sunday in Vegas....insuring some cameras are around to get it, will lay low on the Senate floor for a couple weeks hanging back with Roland Burris, David Vitter, and Larry Craig....and redemption will be his in the eyes of his constituency. HALLELUJAH !!!...they'll scream, gawd has saved him. And in two weeks time, he'll slap on an extra heaping helping of hair gel on that do of his, and be back on the Sunday talk stump blasting Obama like never before. Only this time it'll be ok cause he done cleared himself w/ Gawd

Just a factual correction, Craig is no longer in the U.S. Senate. If Ensign wants to hang back with him, it will need to be in an airport bathroom.

I'm a Democrat and think this is an issue we should just leave alone. I saw Harold Ford on TV today and he quite rightly said that Ensign should be judged as a politician on his ideas, not what he does in his personal life. Those of us who wanted to "Move On" from President Clinton's imbroglios are on really thin ice when wanting to exploit Senator Ensign's personal issues.

Although, one relevant feature in Ensign's problems is the blackmail from the husband of his lady friend. Smart politicians need to keep themselves immune from blackmail as this person may have wanted something more than money, perhaps to corrupt a powerful politician, thus the relevancy of personal indiscretions for politicians.

The answer might be for the country to stop making any kind of sexual behaviour between consenting adults an issue of interest to anyone but the parties. Like the Europeans do. If there are no political consequences for getting caught fooling around, the blackmailer has nothing to use as leverage.

On balance the impossible standard our politicians are held to leaves us with some of the most boring, uninspired, vacuous, but scandal-resistant politicians ever.

How foolish to make such a" ghoulash "of your "beliefs". Ensign does not keep his fake morals, his politics and his moralizing separate. They're all thrown in together. Yes it's the more sophisticated thing to let these matters remain an issue for the parties concerned. But this is not the case in America. You make blackmail the common denominator for not putting much into these affairs. It is childish to make sex and sexuality weigh in so heavily. But there are people who use them as means of evaluating a person. It takes intelligence and thought to expect the same from our politicians. As long as emotion and religion guide many Americans there will always be these mishaps. It shouldn't be an impossible standard for our politicians to maintain a high level of integrity. What's wrong is expecting them not to be human. Once they betray their own beliefs it's harder to trust.

What exactly is the purpose of a man admitting to something no one knows about while his Repub buddies stand there and feign concern for him? You must ask, what is he up to, hoping to run for President and the country will have forgotten about this by that time? He has high hopes.

It's only embarrassing if you get caught. I don't remember the actual statistics but something like 30 percent of people cheat yet we are all so surprised to hear a politician has done so. Does this mean they are "bad" at politics? Do i really care what these people do beyond their office duties? Nope. Of course, this man's hypocrisy will haunt him forever.

No it doesn't mean they're bad at politics. But it often means their politics are bad.

Personally, I think a persons private life should really be private. But the Republicans are the self-styled party of values and try to enforce their religous and social preferences, if not always in law, in rhetoric and moral censure. When they do that, they lay themrselves open to moral judgement and when they "fall from grace" (as we are all capable of doing) they can expect to be criticised for trying to push values on people that you're incapable of adhering to yourself.

If you're in the business of politicising the private lives of individuals and attempting to push moral values onto them, then your own private life should fall into the domain of 'public interest'.
