Dave Takes On "Fire David Letterman" Protesters (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 7/18/09 Updated: 5/25/11

David Letterman

Yesterday, 15 people gathered outside the Ed Sullivan theater to call for the firing of David Letterman. The long anticipated rally, created to protest a joke David Letterman made about Sarah Palin's daughter, turned out to be a dud despite mountains of media attention. On Monday, Letterman apologized to Palin and she accepted, which rendered the feud obsolete. Apparently 15 people didn't get the message.

Last night, Letterman responded to these critics the best way he knows how: mockery. He had writer Joe Grossman wander out on stage looking for the protest, then did a top ten list of things overheard there. He graciously kept the list self-deprecating, joking that CBS had catered the affair, that his old friend Regis attended, and that his hair looks like a toupee.

My guess is that uncle Dave has a pay or play contract...fired and he keeps the dough. A 3 year paid vacation and Social Security too. What if she and McCain had won?

This is preaching to the choir but . . .

There is no way the vast majority of people who watch David Letterman on a regular basis thought this was about anyone but Bristol Palin, People magazine cover girl. Hate to break it to Sarah Palin but the details of her family are not even on this Letterman watcher's radar scren. How or why can anyone defend Sarah Palin who is the only person - okay, with her husband - who brought up "Willow" and "rape."

Some people are just as sick as Letterman.

Oh that day is already here. We just need more people calling for it.

Am sure we can muster more than 15 people!

If anybody should get fired its Barrack Obama for destroying this country, along wth his frumpy wife.

One key difference between the two "combatants" in this phony battle: can anybody ever imagine an instance where Sarah Barracuda would be self-deprecating?
02:08 PM on 06/19/2009
You mean intentionally?
05:11 PM on 07/06/2009
Doesn't have any reason to, unlike buck-tooth letterman.

Hysterical. I love Dave!!!

you know, it's kinda sad because it was a bad joke, he knew it was a bad joke and he apologized. Women really don't find that kind of thing funny - no matter which side of the political isle. However, now, Palin supporters have made the thing so ugly, that everyone is siding with Dave (me too!) and the positive point that was made originally and what he&TV learned and apologized for is now forgotten.

The dishonesty in the reaction - pretending to misunderstand which daughter - offended many people.

The outrage was so phony and contrived it was laughable. So transparent: Sarah begging for attention at others' expense.

The Olive Garden has decided to become political and stand with Sarah Palin and the
hate mongers who called Letterman's son a bas_____ and his wife a s___. They
have no problem with Leno who told similar jokes or Limbaugh or McCain who made
disgusting remarks about Chelsea Clinton. They have no problem with the hateful
and decidedly dangerous remarks Palin made about Obama on a daily basis.
I emailed them to let them know I'd no longer frequent their restaurants. They need
to hear from someone other than the ignorant loudmouths who follow Palin.
05:13 PM on 07/06/2009
Chelsea is ugly no doubt about that.
05:28 PM on 07/06/2009
And exactly who's calling the kettle black? Another ignorant loudmouth.

Keep it up Dave. You have more fans than Sara ever will.

Someone told me today (I can't guaranty that it is a fact) that the guy who was responsible for this MASSIVE turnout of 15 people is planning on coming to Maine to oppose the Same Sex Marriage law that we plan on putting through the state legislature.

Gee, I wonder if he plans of bussing the same fifteen people to Augusta.
05:31 PM on 07/06/2009
Hooray for the 15 people! Got to oppose same sex freaks.
05:00 PM on 06/18/2009
Dave..................never give in
If YOU do
I give up.

I've always found Letterman's lame whitebread comedy forgettable (and his dorky sidekick utterly repellent), but I have to take his side on this one. But his apology sets a dangerous precedent for political satire. Palin is a spoiled brat who thinks she's somehow immune to ridicule no matter what she says & does. She'll probably escalate her petulant reactions over the next few years, which will only drive the Republican party deeper into the hole it's in. Good.

The angry old man feels better now. If CBS keeps Couric why should they not keep him. Their standards are pretty low.
