Baron Cohen Dons Bull Suit For 'Bruno' In Spain

Bruno

MADRID — Actor Sacha Baron Cohen's latest movie character, an Austrian fashionista called Bruno, drew gasps and some cheers as he appeared dressed as a bull in front of Spain's main bullring Thursday.

The British actor-comedian who was in Madrid to promote his new movie _ "Bruno" _ arrived in a horse-drawn carriage escorted by muscular matadors just as the sun set on the historic bullring Las Ventas.

"Ich have come to redress the wrong done to the gay community by that Hollywood movie on Harvey Milk which was acted by Sean Penn, who's not even gay," Baron Cohen told a crowd of bemused Madrid onlookers in a German accent.

Baron Cohen's 2006 movie, "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," was a surprise box-office hit.

His new film, which is scheduled for release July 10, features a flamboyantly gay character whose outrageous wit outstrips that of Borat.

Sporting large hooves and a well-endowed furry black bull costume, Bruno strutted on a sand-colored carpet and invited "all cute bullfighters" to his hotel room for a party.

Baron Cohen staged an elaborate prank at the recent MTV Movie Awards. In character as Bruno, he descended from the ceiling on a wire and, in a fake mishap, ended with his bare hindquarters in rapper Eminem's face.

Eminem stormed off in a huff, but later said he was in on the joke.

The July edition of GQ magazine featured a fully naked Bruno on the cover, outdoing Jennifer Aniston who wore a necktie only for the January issue.

I resisted Borat but once I saw it I was hooked. You have to see him in context to really appreciate it, because there are a lot of subtle feedback loops going on, including making fun of some of the very things people are complaining about here. Clips of these movies can't possibly convey the overall effect.

To appreciate the genius and humour in Mr Cohen’s work you really need to have an open mind and be able (and willing) to laugh at yourself. Clearly, some of those commenting here take themselves rather too seriously and it’s their loss.

Years ago, I couldn't stand him via the media clips of 'Borat', but I recently saw 'Borat' and laughed a lot... so, I look forward to this new film.

There seems to be a great deal of confusion over Cohen's purpose in making this movie/pulling off these stunts. He is not a gay rights activist, just as when he made Borat he was not an Anti-racist activist. He is a comedian who excels at highlighting the failings of certain sections of society. This movie was made to highlight homophobia, is it a pro-gay movie? No. the raison detre is to poke fun at those who are uncomfortable with gay society by shoving a fabricated representation of that society in their faces. Is it a true representation of gay culture? Of course not, but any right-minded individual knows it isn't, only the homophobic can think it is a genuine gay man carrying out these outrageous actions. The rest of us can only sit back and laugh, or shake our heads at the reaction.

I think it's more sad--and sometimes dangerous--than laughable that people hold those kinds of views. I guess if you can't educate 'em, laugh at 'em and feel morally superior?

I hate this guy.

There's no such thing as bad publicity.
You may hate his humor, but you're posting about him thus promoting him. C'est la biz.

I'm willing to bet that a lot of the negative SBC comments here are coming from Ron Paul loons.

You lose. I was never a Ron Paul supporter but I find Cohen's humor sophomoric and totally disgusting. His profanity has gone way too far as well.

Lighten up bobbyperu. Your negativity is not becoming. Cohen is hilarious and courageous. I'm sure that there are plenty of obama loons, also, who can laugh at themselves and the foibles of human nature that Cohen is so good at showcasing.

15 minutes? He has been going for well over 10 years. Borat made 9 figures, Bruno will as well. Just because you are a tool and probably a homophobe doesn't mean you get to knock people who are wildly successful.

Guess you don't get the expression at all, do you?

And because this humor is not to someone's taste they're automatically a tool and a homophobe? Lighten the eff up!

That last part, btw, sounds like the kind of defense the free market crowd uses in support of their precious bank CEOs....no elephants, huh?...

I don't particularly care for his brand of comedy, but I do love the bull costume.
