In the below photos provided by the Jewish National Fund (JNF), actor Liev Schreiber and his son Sacha are seen planting a tree as partner Naomi Watts reads a blessing as part of a reforestation project in Galilee earlier this week. The bundle on Naomi's chest is their younger son Samuel.

The family has also been snapped in Tel Aviv.

I continue to be disgusted with the strange caucasian notion that the land in and around Israel / Palestine was a "barran sand heap" that Zionists have miraculously converted to beautiful arable land purely because they are living a wayward myth. That land was populated and cultivated long before Jews from Europe and Russia came there (by, among other people Jews who were /still/ living there, natively).

I mean, it's all well and good they're planting trees now, but the number of trees destroyed by Israelis and their favored tourists far, far exceeds this paltry photo op.

Actually you are completely wrong. Israel is the only country in the world with more trees now then when the country was established.

Patently false. I'd like to see you prove that argument and even if it /is/ true, that doesn't erase the fact that Israel is stripping olive trees out of the West Bank and dumping raw sewage and even toxic waste there as well.

I'm pretty sure Arabs are their own ethnic group, chief. The only people who buy into that whole Aryan construct, well... we don't need to go there.

"Caucasian" notion? You people are race obsessed (if not outright racist).

That's rich. Are they olive trees? Simple logic would dictate that if the Israeli's didn't bulldoze the trees in the first place there would be no need to 'plant trees'.

Let's hope they also helped some illegal settlers to pack up and move back to Israel behind the '67 border.

Watts and Schreiber are two bit actors. I would never nor will I ever pay to see these two in any movie.

Plant trees? Pathetic.

Why? They are planting trees in the Galilee, which is in Israel proper, not the West Bank or Gaza or any occupied territory. Unless of course you believe Israel should be thrown into the sea.

These comments reak of anti-semitism. It is a long held tradition when someone visits Israel that they plant a tree. Planting of trees has transfored this desert land into a beautiful country that is ecologically sound. All countries in the middle east would help the environment if they followed Israel's lead.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:50 PM on 06/20/2009

Yes, why can't everyone else follow Israel's lead. You do realize that Israel makes a habit of bulldozing thousand year old Roman trees belonging to Palestinian farmers, right? I should know since it happened to my family. Are you really under this delusion that Israel respects the environment? Respects the trees that were there for generations? They make a habit of wasting water in a region with a finite supply of fresh water, but let us do as you and pretend that they haven't in fact destroyed the environment by destroying the landscape and introducing florae not meant to be grown in that region. I'm sure their nuclear supply has little rainbows and unicorns painted on them.

Nope. Israel isn't judaism and is NOT entitled to the 'this is racism!' defense it keeps trying to make. The reality is the reverse. Every time Israel seeks to wrap itself in the goodwill belonging to judaism, Israel blurs, deliberately, this crucial distinction.

This encourages people the world over to equate Israel and judaism, and that is the kind of confusion that gets synagogues firebombed and cemetaries desecrated in Montreal or Rio di Janeiro.

With your kind of logic it means that Israel should not be criticized, questioned or held accountable for anything they may do. Sounds very dangerous to me. Being critical of Israel is not anti-semitic.

Why must it always be Israel OR Palestine?

I believe BOTH deserve land, and BOTH should be recognized a nd should recognize one another. Both side have done some horrific things to the other.

I, for one, am happy to see a tree planted by anyone there.

Yes, I like utopias too.

One is taking land from the other. There is not an endless supply of land to go around - someone has to lose out.

I like both actors so it is painful to see how politically tone-deaf they are. This is what they pick to do at this moment in history? It is like Bush calling Sharon a man of peace.

Galilee is not in dispute. While I would love to see Schreiber and Watts to speak out against Israeli occupation and the illegal settlements, that's an entirely different matter.

They're both great actors and this seems like a nice trip.

Demonizing all Israeli's is ridiculous, focus the attention where it needs to be focused, the far-right government of Netanyahu and his racist cohort Lieberman and the illegal settlements filled with radical settlers,.

Move on folks.

Would you have told African Americans to "move on" during the 1960's, finding their struggles against political oppression to be inconvenient to a really good photo op?

Let me know how much criticizing two hollywood actors taking a trip with their family to Galilee helps the Palestinian cause, a cause which I'm a strong proponent of.

http://www.lievschreiber.org/2002.shtml

"I would consider myself someone who believes very much in the nation of Israel," continues Schreiber, "and that all of these displaced [Jews] have a right to a home, and I would defend that to my death. The only thing is that I don't think it should come at the cost of another race, and it's at the expense of another nation. Now, in terms of particular boundaries--the specific policy right now--I do think we should pull out of the illegal territories."

Do I wish he was a stronger proponent of Palestinians? Sure. But he's no Netanyahu.

Is there a reason that none of you remember or know that when the UN voted on the State of Israel they also voted to give the PAlestinians land but the Arabs chose to fight instead thereby leaving the Palestinians homeless. Jorday didn't allow any refugees in and no one else did either because they hoped to do exactly what has been done - blame it all on Israel, create discontent among the Arabs who found themselves homeless after losing the war and keep it all going until Israel could be destroyed. Fifty some odd years later they're still waiting - unfortunately for the people left homeless but again - not Israel's fault.

As you have said, the UN voted to give Palestinians land as well. Who is preventing that land from being controlled by Palestinians? There is only one country preventing the Palestinians from having their own nation, and the whole world knows who that country is.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:10 PM on 06/19/2009

Read what he said. The Palestinians were supposed to have land. In fact, they would have controlled a lot more than what Israel has now. But instead they chose to fight, they chose to try and kill the Jews.

So who has prevented the Palestinians from having their own nation? The answer is, of course, the Palestinians.
