SHAWBURY, England — Britain's Prince William has hinted he would like to follow in the army-booted footsteps of his younger brother and fight on the front line.

But, as the future king, it's unlikely William would be exposed to the dangers faced by Prince Harry, who served in Afghanistan.

"I still remain hopeful there's a chance," William, who is currently training to fly search-and-rescue helicopters, told reporters. "I think as a future leader of the armed forces, it's really important you at least get the opportunity to be credible and to do the job I signed up for, as best I can. That's all I want to do.

"The search and rescue role is now slightly different to obviously being able to go to Afghanistan, but it's still doing an important job."

William learned to fly during a stint with the Royal Air Force last year. He was criticized for landing one RAF chopper on his girlfriend Kate Middleton's lawn during his training, and for using another to fly to a bachelor party on the Isle of Wight.

Prince Harry, 24, known in the military as Lt. Henry Wales, is taking the same flight training program completed by his 26-year-old brother.

Maj. Zog Zvegintzov, the commanding officer of the defense helicopter flying school in Shawbury, western England, has declined to say what role the younger prince would eventually have.

Harry _ who was denied the chance to go to Iraq when the British army said it was too risky _ served in Afghanistan last year as a battlefield air controller until his time was cut short by a media leak. He now could spend four months to a year training in one of the British Army's helicopters _ the Apache, the Lynx or the Gazelle.

Zvegintzov said that the choice of aircraft _ and where it was deployed _ would depend on the British military's operational requirements at the time, adding that Harry was still a long way from completing his training.

"There are a lot of hurdles to jump en route to qualifying as an army pilot," Zvegintzov said.

The news conference was orchestrated to brief the media on the brothers' progress _ and to sate the public's appetite for news and pictures. Harry and his brother strolled out of an aircraft hangar to pose in front of two helicopters left idle on the tarmac as a long line of photographers snapped away.

"We're both here just doing our bit, trying to become helicopter pilots," Harry said. "We're having a fantastic time. Yes, it's hard work, but everything is hard work."

Harry's bemused fellow students watched from a distance. They said they had come to watch Harry hold court before the world's media.

"It's probably good for them, to have one day for the press to ask all their questions and get on with it," said flight school student Robert Carr, 24. "It's hard enough going through the course, I can't imagine what it's like for them."

The elder prince talked about living with his younger brother. Joking around, William said, "Bearing in mind I cook (for) him and feed him basically every day, he's done rather well."

William,
To prepare for one day becoming the king of England,
it would be far better were you to ready yourself to
become a world leader determined to lead the world
away from the chaotic waste of combat and
military "solutions."
If you wish to be physically fit, morally sound
and worldly wise, take up Pilates.

Pretty funny.

A Prince who has never been in a street fight, bar fight, most likely never punched in the face, most likely has no personal experience with violence upon his body saying he wants to go fight.

This guy will one day be the King of England due to birth.

Really want to impress me, lots of folks, tell the world it is time to bring and end to kings and queens and princes and the rest of the royalty b.s.

He sd. catch a plane to the US and take a walk in South Central or Detroit before he starts running his mouth about combat.

Punk.

Sorry, William, there was a time, long ago in Europe, when the nobles actually fought the wars.

That time has passed, and you and your family are actually tourist attractions.

Nice Mickey, get back in your box.

Where would we be today if W had felt that way about Vietnam?

The difference is MIttens thinks he and his boys are royalty, while Prince Harry and William know they are.

"Combat" for a prince: a 45 second photo-op in some protected pocket, followed immediately by a ticket tape "welcome home" parade in London, a medal cerimony where he receives honors bestowed for only the highest acts of valor and sacrifice, and shortly thereafter a book tour where he recounts his acts of heroism for the historic record.

"Combat" for you and I: 6 to 18 months seperation from your family, waiting in line daily for computer access so you can read about all your childrens' milestone moments you're missing, week after week of hoping daily that today won't be the day you or one of your buddies die or lose an arm or a leg. ..and if you get stop-lossed: back to step 1 and repeat...

Maybe his Grandpa Prince Phillip, has been telling him great tales of the Great War, millions dead, starving, consequences for more wars and chaos. Those great old years of English Imperialism throughout the Middle East, and imperialist land grab.

Unlikely, Prince Philip was far too young to have been in the "great war" and I believe he was Greek, and not English at that time and as for "imperialist land grab" whose land are you sitting on?

All good Brits need to ritually dip their hands in the blood or they won't have bragging rights about how they served humanity and the Empire. If shouldering the White Man's Burden involves killing backwards people, thyen the Brits are more barbaric that the babarians. The boy should follow in his mother's footsteps and go to medical school and become a pacifist doctor treating the sick and disadvantaged. Becoming a man is more than pulling a trigger.

I agree. What makes me wonder is that he is almost 27 and still thinks going to war is something great. The military always gives you the impression its something adventures with barley risk. In his age he should know better.

Prince William is not a stupid man and I doubt whether he thinks "going to war is something great" at all. I believe he means that he should not be spared the burden of war on account of his position. (Unlike the scions of the higher echelons of American society
who famously do everyrhing they can to avoid it)

Love Prince William, and where ever Diana is she is proud but this is too risky.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:34 PM on 06/18/2009

Why?

It's an offensive thought that Diana Spencer's sons are not expendable but everyone else's sons are.

That's the point of a monarchy though, isn't it? Just by the circumstances of their birth---these 2 young men are special and not expendable. They are in close line for the throne. On a modern level, I agree with you, but when you think of the monarchy as historic tradition, the risks of combat are much too risky.

If he believes in this fiasco, then do not hold him up. Those that believe in this war should be there.
