Olbermann: Limbaugh Operating With "Increasing Desperation" In Sotomayor Coverage

Keith Olbermann condemned Rush Limbaugh's coverage of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor on Thursday's "Countdown".

Olbermann accused Limbaugh of operating with "increasing desperation and decreasing awareness of the world around him" in criticizing Sotomayor's membership in the professional women's group Belizean Grove. He also denounced Limbaugh for comparing the nominee to "a housekeeper and offering her a vacuum cleaner."

"Would they have forgiven the judge's involvement in an old boys club?" Limbaugh asked on his radio show. "Any conservative in this situation would find their nomination dead in the water... I think I'm going to send Sotomayor and her club a bunch of vacuum cleaners to clean up after their meetings".

Belizean Grove is a 100+ member invitation-only women's social group based on Manhattan's Upper East Side. In addition to Sotomayor, the group includes members from the financial, military and diplomatic worlds.

Later in the segment, Olbermann interviewed Melissa Harris-Lacewell, a politics and African American studies professor at Princeton, who discussed the implications of Limbaugh's remarks.

"I think the big key is not so much what Limbaugh utters, but how we react as a public," Harris-Lacewell noted.

"What's exciting about Limbaugh's outburst is that white men with television shows say things like 'this is completely appalling, let's bring a young black woman on to talk about how appalling this is,'" she added, referring to Olbermann.
