ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — The first family was in the mood for something sweet _ something like vanilla custard, fudge and sprinkles.

On a muggy Saturday just before Father's Day, President Barack Obama took Sasha, 8, and Malia, 10, to The Dairy Godmother, a frozen custard shop just outside Washington.

The president snacked on vanilla custard with hot fudge and toasted almonds in a cup, said the shop's owner, Liz Davis. Sasha ordered a brownie sundae treat with vanilla custard, hot fudge and chocolate sprinkles. Malia walked out of the shop, eating the remains of a waffle cone with vanilla frozen custard.

During his 15-minute stay, Obama also shook hands with customers and posed for pictures. Obama left the shop with some puppy treats for the family's dog, Bo.

Good to see our president out and about with his girls.

With everything going on in our country at this time why do cutesie little stories such as this even make the cut? Unfortunately many people can't even afford to take their kids for ice cream.
It will only get worse.

That's what I say, Get a life. He puts his children first, just like it should be, and if there is anything wrong with that you really do need to get a life.

I love these photos. The love they feel is written all over their faces.

I hate to use the "P" word, but I can't help comparing these photos to the Palin family. While Palin claims to be such a good mom (and based her qualifications on being a hockey mom) I have never seen one ounce of affection or love toward her children. They passed that baby around like a hot potato, and she used those kids to try and make her look good. But never have I seen any affection, love or laughter with her children like the Obama's. Quite a contrast.

I wonder how Levi Johnston celebrated his Father's Day????
02:06 PM on 06/23/2009
sad and alone, I'd guess. Even he doesn't deserve the crap the Palin's are putting him through.

Probably just glad he is not in that family

The girls look cute and I hope that they had a good day with their dad. It must be hard to be in the spot light just to have an ice cream.

Sasha don't like the cameras following them around every time they are trying to spend time with their dad. Sasha is young and want him all to themselves; plus she don't get the hoopla about their family!
The Girls are pretty and growing up fast! POB is right to spend as much time as possible with his daughters despite the restrictions!

A friend and I, both of us are old enough to remember John John hiding under the desk when Kennedy was president ,are delighted with the Obama family. Particularly the example the president and Michelle set for all families, regardless of race, social economic status or ethnic background to be involved in their children's lives in ways so many of today's too busy parents are not. They also reach out to other to chidlren not their own with invitations to the White House and presentations in local schools.

For the first time in decades I believe we finally have a family in the White House that truely reflects the values and goals of most Americans.

Summer break from school.....
Cut off jeans and flip flops......
Taking dad out for ice cream......

Now those are great memories for a little girl.

Mr. President....you've made it "cool" to be a great dad...

I hope so, I kinda feel bad the kids have to deal with that everyday. Everyday is a circus for them, people waving at them, following them, secret service is always with them... I think about that sometimes and wonder how their family can put up with it. They must have a really strong bond or something.

President Obama stated it perfectly in Parade; "they handle it with such poise, humor and grace this life they have been thrusted into"!

He needs to stop this. This is making it hard for his security to protect him and his children. He needs to stop
04:18 PM on 06/22/2009
what ?? of course, he isn't going to stop this. as you say.
those girls need to be able to have an occasional ice cream. It was planned ahead so no one could pl.ot anything terri.ble.

And over the same Father's Day weekend a prominent Republican disappears because, according to his wife, he needs time away from the kids.

I'll take President Obama's family values any day.

RIght on!
06:07 PM on 06/23/2009
Thank you RegLib!!! I love that someone else noticed this too. And, to think this prominent person plans on running against Obama....hmmm, maybe he and Palin are on the Appalachian Trail looking for bears together! Oh, and as a baby girl myself, pretty sure Miss Sasha doesn't like sharing daddy with the world and I can't say as I blame her but I'm very thankful she does.

These fools criticizing President Obama for taking his daughters out for ice cream on a Saturday are just too much. I'll allow that it's good PR for the administration, but duh - it's great PR for the local businesses he frequents! He's helping stimulate the local DC area economy (and God knows we could use the help). Lay off, already!
