I Like ItI Don’t Like It

AP: WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama said Saturday that current financial rules exploit consumers and he put critics of his proposed overhaul on notice: "While I'm not spoiling for a fight, I'm ready for one."

Obama used his weekly radio and Internet address to defend his recent proposal, which is intended to prevent a repeat of the breakdown that has sent the U.S. economy reeling. But such major changes face a fight in Congress and opposition from some leaders in the banking and insurance industries.

In the address, Obama focused on a consumer watchdog office that he wants to set up.

"This is essential," Obama said. "For this crisis may have started on Wall Street. But its impacts have been felt by ordinary Americans who rely on credit cards, home loans and other financial instruments."

The Consumer Financial Protection Agency would take over oversight of mortgages, requiring that lenders give customers the option of "plain vanilla" plans with clear and affordable terms.

"It will have the power to set tough new rules so that companies compete by offering innovative products that consumers actually want and actually understand," Obama said. "Those ridiculous contracts _ pages of fine print that no one can figure out _ will be a thing of the past. You'll be able to compare products, with descriptions in plain language, to see what is best for you."

More broadly, Obama's changes would begin to reverse the easing on federal regulations pressed by President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. Democratic leaders in Congress are promising legislation will get passed this year, but that depends in part on how Congress answers big questions about the overhaul, including the role of the Federal Reserve.

"I welcome a debate about how we can make sure our regulations work for businesses and consumers," Obama said. "But what I will not accept _ what I will vigorously oppose _ are those who do not argue in good faith."

By that, Obama said, he meant those who defend the status quo at any cost. He didn't name any people or organizations, but said special interests are already mobilizing to fight change. He called that typical Washington.

"These are the interests that have benefited from a system which allowed ordinary Americans to be exploited," Obama said. The president said he would stand up for his plans, saying: "While I'm not spoiling for a fight, I'm ready for one. The most important thing we can do to put this era of irresponsibility in the past is to take responsibility now."

Dear Commander and Chief,

I understand why troops will fight hard for a good military leader they believe in and why the better army can lose a war because of poor leadership…Vietnam. I voted for you to fight for me with me...to lead the battle. I am motivated by the issues, single payer health care, consumer protection, equal rights for all humans, banking reform etc… I am ready, able and willing to fight but armies must be lead. I will write, call, question and let my views be known to my local, state and federal representatives and senators. But, I do not subscribe to your Rodney King style of battle… "can't we all just get along" is not a strategy for victory. Losing is hard but losing without a fight is stupid. Please put your helmet on Sir.

A Demecrate with guts.

Consumer Protection?..Regulation??

Government by Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan has so far managed
to eliminate a substantial portion of their competition, Bear Stearns, Lehman, etc. etc.

Great care must be taken that measures masquerading as"regulation"
and "consumer protection" do not favor Megamoney to the detriment
of smaller banks and savings/loan institutions.

There is a substantial liklihood that under this guise, Megamoney will seek
to disadvantage these smaller institutions in furtherance of their own
increasing monopolistic stranglehold on the US economy.

nice, thanks, wonderful. Now why don;t you fight for a true Public option for the 72% of people who want a public option.

either you work for us, or you work for the insurance companies ...

it's time to realize that no matter what you do, the rethugs will not support a thing you do, so move on, and do what you were elected to do. Would really be sad for you to not get a second term beczause you wanted all the rethugs to be your friend.

does anybody really care that the world hates us ? I for one don't. They hate out of jealousy and who could blame them, look how great we are and how pitiful they are ( just the haters ) cause most of the world loves America. If you listen to much to the press, you may start to believe the crap they feed you. Travel a bit, if you find that someone from another country that hates you, it because your an ass. Its not America they hate, its just some of the people here. If you have manners and you resprect other people, you will probably get the same

No, tnkeating, you are wrong. And I have lived overseas, and have relatives in Europe with whom I speak frequently. They hate American Policy since the 2nd World War, through which we have used our powerful military to overthrow governments we did not like. Chile, Guatemala, Iran, etc. And the others we did not have to overthrow because we have supported their dictators for decades -- Saudi Arabia. Anyone who things that the U. S. overseas military is used to spread democracy is simply ignorant of the facts. No, they do not hate us out of jealous, but out of anger that we do not let other governments run their own business. Our military budget almost exceeds the military budges of the rest of the ENTIRE world. We are not run by three branches of government, but by six or seven powerful industries which control congress. Maybe you'll have to stop getting your news from FOX (Faux) news.

Thank you for trying to protect us. However, you can protect us much better by overhauling the financial systems not by just creating a consumer protection agency. They will be powerless against the wall street greed. Your financial reform falls short. I can't help feeling this is a cop-out.

As Right Wingers have been screaming at us for years, it is not the government's job to baby its citizens. However, it would be nice if there were, e.g., a "czar" for middle class affairs / personal responsiblity who could spread practical money management advice and such. As we saw from the mortgage meltdown, there are many Americans who work hard and who aren't looking for handouts, but who (for whatever reasons) don't know how to manage money / credit well. Obama's consumer protection might be a step in this direction.

I bet that the morgage meltdown would have been a lot less severe if Ronnie and Nancy and spent more time talking about *the nuts and bolts* of "personal responsibility" and less time talking about what our brains look like on drugs. I'm very glad that we now have a POTUS who is as charismatic as Ronnie, but with 10x as much substance.

It's hard to manage your money effectively when the financial sector can pick your pocket at will and with congressional approval. The mortgage meltdown would have been a lot less severe if Ronnie and Nancy had never outgrown SAG. There wouldn't have BEEN a mortgage meltdown if Clinton had shown some spine and refused to sign the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999. It's not the government's job to baby its citizens, but it IS the government's job to provide for the common good by protecting those citizens from thieves in business suits. And if the thieves complain, it's the government's job to regulate them until they squeal like the swine they are.

I agree...if only Clinton and other pro Gramm-Leach-Bliley advocates had listened to Sen. Dorgan (who, as you probablly know, warned that America would regret G-L-B 10 years hence).

BTW, I love the imagery of making the bad guys "squeal"! lol

He should be ready for a fight

More than 'A' Fight

This man is brilliant

He is not only able to - but he will do it- I am sure

Once he begins shaming the anti-intellect of this country and it's leaders- with educated leadership.

POTUS must expose the links between the policies written and the connection to Big Business.

Policy makers that are in bed with Big Business - must be exposed.

Connect the campaign finance reform and laws for business - not the American People.

More specific- real names-

Businesses which sold the American people down the Global World's drain-

i do not believe that president obama will rigorously fight any special interest group. he'll force them to make tiny concessions, which they will fight tooth and nail with the help of their paid for congressmen and senators.
his administration is still taking advice from the banksters that caused this mess...
big pharma and the ama like the way things are, costliest medical care in the world and 37th in it's affectiveness...
it's time to take control away from coporate america, pull the reins out of their greasy palms...
nothing is ever going to change unless "we the people" don't start voting with our heads and not just our hearts.

The easiest way to avoid problems with your credit card company is USE THE CREDIT CARDS LESS OFTEN, pay your bills on time, spend less.

I do not believe that the US Government looks out for the people.

I am not pleased with most of the Republicans OR most of the Democrats in Congress. I have no confidence in the Government regulatory agencies to protect us.

My favorite Congressman are Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich.

WAKE UP AMERICA.
