I think it is significant that the Obama Administration has been able to get Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, the UK, Saudi Arabia and Bermuda to agree to take detainees. I think there will be more countries coming forward to help President Obama solve this problem which was created by Bush. I think it is a tribute to the diplomatic efforts of the Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton, as well. The DOJ has been methodically going through the cases, one by one, and according to Reuters, half of the detainees cases have been gone through and decisions have been made as to trial, repatriation, or the third category - too dangerous to let go, too tortured to try. So it seems he will meet his January deadline and Holder can work, in my opinion, more important issues.

It irritates me to no end that everyone here in America is affaid to have the Gitmo detainees here...So the Government is caving to repubs because they frightened everyone about them being here...So we send them to other countries....Who I am afraid will end up letting these guys loose, either by accident or on purpose....Send them Here to USA in Super max prisons. We already have some terrorists locked up on oudr soil.....Safe and sound....I trust our prisons more than other countries.

What irritates me is you insisting calling these men "terrorist" these are just detainees. Most of those guys were farmers. American citizens have done worst to other american citizens. THEY belong in super max prisons. Why would you trust our prisons more than other countries. these people are not the problem of the U.S. anymore. You guys from the left insisted the prison be closed.

are they free to roam in portugal? or are they going to be in prisons there instead? if they are free to roam, why not send them back to where they are from? what's the difference? put them back where you found them?

The difference is that if you put them back where you find them, knowing they should have not been imprisoned to begin with, their very compassionate governments will imprison and torture them indefinitely.

I don't understand the need to send prisoners to other countries when we were the ones who caught them and sent them to Guantanamo. Now we have to beg other countries to man up and take OUR prisoners. Why are we being such cowards?

Americans should be ashamed at our behavior in regards to housing GITMO prisoners here in the U.S.. We have become the cowards of the world.
Is this what the "Home of The Brave" means? That the only sacrifices we are willing to do on our part to fight our war against terror is to "go shopping" ? Are we really this bunch of cowaring, sniveling, spoiled brats who claim to be the moral compass of the world, the beacon of fairness and liberty, that only allow our millitary men and women do the dirty work? Do we really want to show the world that our people will not contribute the smallest of risks in solving the problems of terrorism? This is a country that incarcerates the most people of any in the world and yet we have been convinced by the right that we are unable, unwilling or too scared to hold a few prisoners in Max. security until they can be lawfully tried, relesed or punished?
This is a pathetic display of cowardice as I have ever seen this country engage in. This will show the terroists the extent of our convictions alright. Shame on the Right wing cowards who have made these loser terrorists and innocent captives at gitmo some kind of super human ,mind controlling beings that the U.S. is incapable and too cowardly to deal with as a fair country should. Shame on all those unwilling to do thier part as American Citizens.

thanks Portugal--

We have big problems- USA- does not even rank within the top 25 countries in the world for education!

Wonder why? Just glance at one of our statesman, the Indiana Representative, Mike Pence. His comments were noted by the Supreme Leader in his prayer on Friday in Tehran. Mike Pence is the statesman who is not sure if evolution is real. My guess- he will decide depending on the education of his constituents.

At that rate, we only need about 50 more countries to help us clean up our Guantanamo mess.

Considering that Portugal allowed her airbases in the Azores to be used for the rendition flights, they should be taking in at least ten.

Poland and Britain, which actually took part in the waterboarding - and other "alternative" interrogations - of the detainees, should take in considerably more.

And the US should house the lion's share of its victims.

Sensible Americans must be embarrassed about looking so cowardly and irrational throughout the world.

Well, congress won't help him so he is doing it on his own. What a joke our congress is.

Why is it that when the U.S. shunned the need to have a coalition in its fight against terror (the "Cowboy" mentality of Bush), it now needs a coalition to figure out what to do with the hundreds of people it illegally detained and imprisoned. How embarrassing for the "super-power" of the world....

Because they can? Yes I suppose- but keep in mind the USA- does not even rank within the top 25 countries in the world for education!
