HONOLULU — Comforted by the U.S. military's missile defense systems, Hawaii residents doubt a North Korean missile would light up the clear island sky like fireworks on the Fourth of July.

But that doesn't mean the islands' laid-back beach-goers aren't worried that a long-range missile could be launched in the direction of Hawaii's emerald mountains and white sand beaches around Independence Day.

"The North Koreans are unbalanced and could try anything," said Dan Gleason while walking his Jack Russell mix dog in downtown Honolulu. "If they do hit Honolulu, I hope it's a good shot, because I don't want to go through the aftermath."

Japanese media have reported the North Koreans appear to be preparing for a long-range test near July 4. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has ordered additional protections for Hawaii in case a missile is launched over the Pacific Ocean.

But only one concerned person with a Hawaii trip planned has called the state's tourism office seeking information, state Tourism Liaison Marsha Wienert said. With Hawaii's huge military presence, no one should be afraid to travel to the islands, she said.

"We believe that this is a very safe destination," she said.

Retiree Mae Dong, a Honolulu resident of more than 50 years, said the United States must remain resolute in the face of any North Korean aggression.

"It's disturbing," she said Friday. "We cannot run. We have to fight them."

On Wednesday, a military radar system _ shaped like a giant golf ball _ slowly disappeared from Hawaii's coast as it headed out to sea. The 28-story missile X-Band defense radar is designed to work with ground-based missile interceptors on the island of Kauai to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles during their final phase of flight.

The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system was returned to Hawaii after the mobile launcher recently was tested at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Since 2005, all six tests of the ground-based missile system have intercepted their targets, excluding tests when the targets malfunctioned, Missile Defense Agency spokeswoman Pam Rogers said.

It is one of two missile defense systems the military tests at the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai. The other is the sea-based Aegis system, which has recorded 18 successful firings in 22 attempts.

"We're in a good position should it become necessary to protect American territory," Pacific Fleet Lt. Cmdr. Chuck Bell said.

That's all reassuring, said Sean Sackett, who sells espresso around Honolulu from his "Joe on the Go" coffee van.

"It doesn't get more threatening than them shooting missiles at us and seeing if they can reach us," he said. "Our military is good enough to shoot anything out of the sky that comes close to us."

If there were a confirmed missile launch toward Hawaii, outdoor sirens would alert the public, said state Civil Defense spokeswoman Shelly Ichishita. Messages would go out on TV and radio urging people to stay indoors or inside their cars.

But Hawaii's statewide alert level hasn't been raised, she said.

And Honolulu resident Patricia Kealoha said she wasn't going to let the prospect of unseen overseas missiles change her day-to-day life.

"I hope they can stop the missiles," she said Friday as she sat outside state Circuit Court in Honolulu. "But it doesn't phase me because it's out of my control."

Great opportunity to run farther tests on our ABM systems. They've made an aggressive stance.
Now show them how far behind they are in technology.

I doubt that North Korea really wants to attack the US. When they attacked South Korea in 1950, we napalmed them.

wonder if our new cold war will finally make it more affordable to live on Hawaii? After all, this is probably more of a propaganda game to increase the profits of the MIC and have more control , like Iraq was, than it is to truly keep us safe. Little Kim isnt going to launch a loaded missile at us or anyone else because he knows China would jump on him like stink on dung and he knows it. He rightfully fears China, but he knows America only invades if there is profit to be made from it, and NK has nothing worth money, and would cost a fortune to take over which would happen if we invaded or bombed. China on the other hand would just wipe them off the face of the earth, and build another factory to build more lead based toys for US kids to chew on.

Slow news day? North Korea isn't exactly focused on its own best interest, but they if shoot at Hawaii and *miss*, the US will overthrow their government and the rest of the world will stay out of the way. The US went to war, eventually with nuclear weapons, after Hawaii was attacked when it was still a colony. I have a feeling Obama wouldn't ignore an actual threat, if there were one, to his home state.

North Korea has not yet perfected an ICBM, but they are working hard on the Taep'o-dong 2 (TD-2) ballistic missile. This is the missile that has reportedly failed in the last three tests during stage transition. Once perfected, this missile could reach major cities and military bases in Alaska and the smaller, westernmost islands in the Hawaiian chain. There are some reports that say light-weight variations of the TD-2 could fly as far as 10,000 km, placing at risk western U.S. territory in an arc extending northwest from Phoenix, Arizona, to Madison, Wisconsin. NK's capabilities are also limited by the challenges they face in miniaturizing a nuclear warhead to affix to the TD'2. Thus far, NK has not overcome those complexities. For now, if NK launches the TD-2 in the direction of Hawaii, it will be a missile with a dummy warhead, a missile that may fail before it travels much beyond the Sea of Japan. Given time, NK will succeed with their TD'2 and warhead development efforts. When that occurrs, all bets are off and this will be a very different and dangerous game of brinkmanship that NK is playing. Let's hope rational judgement from all of the concerned parties will prevail before the curtain goes up on a play none of want to see.

I wasn't born yet, the last time Hawaii was warned about security threats from the Far East. I'd bet the lost souls of the USS Arizona would caution against cavalier dismissals of expressed threats.

As unlikely as a NK strike is, the cost of vigilance is cheaper than reconstruction.

I live on Maui, we are not in any way afraid or on edge. Of course I don't, as a habit, watch the local TV news. So I and most people I know are not "under the influence" of the sensationalistic media...

That said, its a touchy situation with North Korea, eventually the range of their missiles along with those of other stupid nations will do some damage, somewhere, its inevitable unless the UN grows some, uh, "ca*ones" and handles the situation.
* insert j there.

I live and work in Honolulu. No one here is on edge. Absolutely no one. We're more upset that the SuperFerry left town because of Young Brothers shipping after we spent millions to build it. We're more upset that the Mass Transit Train is a boondoggle that will never be built. We're more upset that the state employees are going on furlough (will Gov. Lingle go on furlough too?) North Korea...what a joke. No one here is concerned in the slightest about a missile that can't even come close to reaching our islands.

Why must the Republican owned AP promote fear through false headlines like this? Hawaii's top industry by far is tourism. It's no secret that Republicans hate Hawaii. They spent a bundle to defeat the first Gay Marriage Referendum in 1998 and again last year in 2008. They hate Obama, who was born in Hawaii.

I long for the day when true, sane journalism returns. I doubt I will live to see it.

Shame on you, Associated Press.

So if Dear Leader launches a missile at us, what is the standard retaliation? I really don't wanna see the people of North Korea suffer anymore because of him...especially not at the hands of us.

If there was ANY CHANCE AT ALL of "Lil' Kim" hitting one of the Hawaiian Islands with a missile you can be SURE the Hawaiian Travel Bureau would be auctioning thousands of beachfront seats on Ebay.
