Republicans on and off Capitol Hill have made political hay out of ABC's decision to broadcast a series of interviews, stories, and even an Obama White House town hall meeting about the administration's strategy on health care reform. At various points, the network was accused of playing the role of presidential mouthpiece in exchange for increased access. Using the segment as a hook, Michael Steele, chairman of the RNC, launched a fundraising drive to get out the RNC's own message on health care.

Now, it is the progressives' turn to complain about the same series. A media watchdog group, Media Matters, has released an analysis of the first installment of the ABC series -- a Good Morning America segment headed by Diane Sawyer -- including critiques of the actual questions asked. In particular, the group draws parallels between the areas of Sawyer's interests and how the Republican strategist Frank Luntz framed his strategy to derail health care reform.

For example, Sawyer began the segment by questioning Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius about "the public fear of a towering $1-to-2 trillion cost. Can Americans afford it?" From there, she pressed he president's top domestic policy adviser, Melody Barnes, about the issue of "rationed care" before playing a video of Newt Gingrich warning about "government bureacrat[s]" telling the public what type of coverage it can and cannot receive.

The similarities to Luntz, Media Matters says, are obvious. The conservative wordsmith, Luntz, wrote in a memo titled, "The Language of Healthcare 2009: The 10 Rules for Stopping the 'Washington Takeover' of Healthcare," that Republicans would be well served to warn of "some committee rationing care and telling people what they can and can't have."

Media Matters goes on from there to raise several objections with the lines of Sawyer's interview, again drawing parallels to Luntz's demonization of government bureaucrats getting between doctors and families. Highlighted in the memo, include the following Sawyer questions:

SAWYER: But if the -- the president said there have been unnecessary CAT scans, unnecessary tests. Who is going to decide what is necessary and unnecessary?

SAWYER: One headline of this then -- to say to Americans, you will be healthier with fewer tests. Trust us. Is that what you're saying?

SAWYER: What percentage of American medicine then do you think is doctors doing unnecessary tests because they're caught in some cycle of unnecessary testing?

SAWYER: So my potato chips are un-American?

This type of microanalysis of Sawyer's questioning seems to be, at its heart, as much about the media at large and how it has covered the health care issue, as about Sawyer herself. Media Matters' objection here involves the tendency among reporters who cover health care and other policy debates to look at an issue through the lens of the opposition. Neither Barnes, nor Sebelius were asked about the administration's commitment to the public option or its position on a compromise co-op proposal for insurance coverage. But, following the Sawyer segment, ABC's Robin Roberts conducted an interview with House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, in which she pressed him on new polls showing that roughly three-quarters of the population support a government-run insurance plan.

On a broader level, the analysis says a lot about the current state of health care reform. There are, at this point, several bills being proposed in Congress, though none have been formally introduced. The administration, meanwhile, has repeatedly expressed its openness to all ideas. And yet, the process is already causing heated debate with Republicans in the Senate already drawing lines in the sand as to what proposals they will and won't support. The Washington Post's Howard Kurtz suggested this past week that conservatives may have been "working the refs" when they were bemoaning ABC's decision to broadcast from the Obama White House. Media Matters is saying, effectively, that the refs were worked.

Unnecessary tests are done to avoid lawsuits. Meninigitis will kill about 400 Americans this year (arounf half the number that will be murdered in Chicago) yet its the number one pediatric malpractice diagnosis.

Don't forget she got her start in the Nixon White House. In fact, she went into exile with him and was one of the people who helped him with his crappy memoirs.

A reporter should always play the devil's advocate. Sawyer gave the opportunity to shoot down the GOP talking points. If she talked over the interviewee and told him he's wrong then you're in FOX territory.

Diane Sawyer is, was and always will be a very conservative lady. Just because she is married to a rather artsy, liberal type guy doesn't mean she shares his views. People just assume that she would, but I have never seen any sign of it. And for all the empathy she has shown her cancer fighting co-host, I wonder if it has ever crossed her mind where all the people who have no insurance end up in their fights against this disease without insurance. By the way, just a not to Diane. The government has been running a health care program pretty well these many years. Medicare probably needs some fine tuning, but it does pretty well, considering the number of people it must assist.

The GOP is using the government (which they are part of) as the boogy man stating that some bureaucrat is going to determine who gets treatment and who doesn't. What they're failing to mention is that right now, your treatment plan is more than likely being ok'ayed or no'kayed by a 20-something sitting in an office located half-way across the globe whose performance bonuses are based on saving the company money - not on what's best for you.

Which would you rather have?

Diane Sawyer is a brat. I still remember how she mocked Howard Dean's wife for not being "fahsionable" enough for her tastes. Sawyer is one of those women loyal only to herself...the queen bee.

Diane Sawyer, has and always will be, a Republican shill. Lest anyone forget the faux patriotism she showed in her demonizing "Dixie Chicks" interview after the lead singer said she was ashamed Bush was from Texas.

Obama and Tim Kaine need to play hardball with these cowardly and/or greedy Democratic senators. They need to make it clear that if they don't give us the vote for real healthcare reform, that we Democrats will run primary opponents against them, and starve them of campaign funds. That will make them change their minds very quickly!

This is a fundamental question no one talks about. Private health insurers make these decisions not only for their own insureds, but also for Medicare and even Medicaid in many instances. I am unimpressed with the performance of both bureaucrats and health insurance company employees.

While I will reserve judgment on the quality of the journalism involved until I see the piece--something neither the Republicans nor the Democrats are willing to do--I am certain that no intelligent discussion of health care "reform" can occur without considering cost and rationing. We already ration; we just don't talk about it. And one can only hope that Sawyer makes the not-so-fine distinctions (generally ignored by press and politicians) between single payer (one payor for everyone, but private docs and hospitals); national health system (publicly-employed docs and publicly-owned facilities); public option (a payment system set up for people who want to opt in, operating alongside our existing employer-based plans); Medicare (a system that uses private docs and hospitals but also uses big health insurance companies to administer a payment system that is part insurance and part welfare--Medicare beneficiaries do not cover the costs of their care with their premiums), and Medicaid (welfare). And so on.

Great thinking and a nice summary of the available choices, which the U.S. media does a terrible, lazy job of not explaining. But to my Canadian eyes, cost and rationing are not the main issues in single-payer, which is the kind of health care I have. Resources are always finite, so there is always rationing. In my system, the sickest and most suffering get treated first. It's like the triage doctors already do in order to decide, for example, which person in the emergency room to see first. The girl with the bleeding stump gets treated ahead of the guy with the sniffles.
So it is with tests and surgeries under my system.
As for costs, we pay about a third-less of GDP per capita (10%) than America does to insure everyone, with no exceptions, benefit ceilings, pre-existing conditions or any other cruel nonsense. America has an entire industry -- health insurance / HMOs -- that places itself between doctor and patient. Therein lies the high cost. Then that industry spend millions corrupting politicians, advertising itself, paying stock options and dividends, all for doing no useful work, really in return for leecing off a vital service.

Consider "value added." An insurance company's goal is to make money for its investors. How is that not in conflict with patient care. It is in the company's best interest for some of their patients to "not survive."

At what point will congress consider the health and welfare of the citizenry over and above shoring up the income of its major campaign donors?

We need to stop the seemingly legal bribery practiced by lobbyists. Any industry that donates more than $2,000 to an elected official must broadcast widely that it is buying influence and will do what it can to insure its own welfare at the expense of the public.

Yeah, in the US it's called lobbying and in any other part of the world it's called bribery and they put folks in JAIL when they try to "lobby"! As long as lobbying is the norm ,the citizens of this once great country will be treated as invisible being while our elected leaders do what the corporations dictate and when piss on the very folks who elected these creeps to "represent" us! Incredible!

I agree! Our elected representatives do not represent the people's wishes - just look at the polls about what we want - qutie a disconnect. They represent only the corporations, lobbyists and other well heel friends that they can benefit from personnaly with little exception. We're still waiting for the 'Mainstreet' bailout...but keep waiting as the banks need more $$$$ at 0% interest so that they can continue raising our rates. Its disgusting. I fear that if it continues our streets could resemble Tehran's.
