Pat Buchanan Mocks Sotomayor During Appearance At English-Only "Conferenece"

First Posted: 07/23/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:30 PM ET

Hey, kids! Remember last Friday, when I warned all of you who live in the Washington Metropolitan area that Pat Buchanan and his most race-baitingest cronies were descending on McLean to rebuild the Republican Party, or at the very least learn racialist kung-fu, at a Ritz Carlton? Well, that happened. And the folks at Think Progress went to this gathering, and lo, they heard Pat Buchanan, MSNBC star, recycling his old criticisms of Sonia Sotomayor, with xenophobic pamphleteer Peter Brimelow. From Think Progress:

PAT BUCHANAN: Judge Sotomayor is up there at school in New York, she gets a scholarship to Princeton, she's graduated with all these big honors and awards they said she never won. What's she doing there in the summer? They said her adviser told her to read children's classics so she can learn English better. How do you graduate number one in Princeton if you're in the summer and you're reading Rumpelstiltskin and Snow White? [laughter] [...]

PETER BRIMELOW: I really do recommend the language issue because you know that polls better than immigration and affirmative action. Eighty-five percent of Americans say they would favor official language policy. The wonderful thing about this issue if you look at what's going to actually happen here is you're going to find that the Obama administration is going to gradually institute institutional bilingualism in the country. It's going to be required to speak Spanish in key positions, the police force and so on. This is a direct attack on the American working class because they are not going to be bilingual.

Yes, ha ha! Sonia Sotomayor may have graduated atop her class at Princeton, but she's Hispanic! And she reread English grammar books to reinforce her studies while in college, which somehow means she was mastering Snow White. Meanwhile, Obama is going to "institute bilingualism" which is a "direct attack on the working class."

Of course, it would be helpful if those "recommending the language issue" had themselves met under a properly spelled banner!

Well done, gentlemen. Well done.

It's amazing to me that they say that Princeton says she never won that award when it's on their website:

"President Tilghman said, “We are proud and delighted that Sonia Sotomayor has been nominated for the Supreme Court. As an undergraduate, Sonia was an excellent student and an exemplary University citizen, graduating summa cum laude and earning the highest award we confer for her strength of character and leadership. Eight years ago we presented her with an honorary degree and two years ago she became a Princeton trustee. She has brought to that role the same kind of insight, discernment, wisdom and good judgment that we are confident she will bring to the deliberations of the highest court in the land.”

Sotomayor earned an A.B. with highest honors in history from Princeton in 1976. She also received the Pyne Prize, the highest general distinction conferred on an undergraduate, which is awarded to the senior who has most clearly manifested excellent scholarship, strength of character and effective leadership."

They misspelled the banner?! OMG, that is so rich. HA. HA. So much for that English-only thing. Looks like Pat and his friends would benefit from reading "Snow White".

Picture of two bigots under a misspelled banner. Priceless! This says so much about the right wingnuts. ROFLMAO. Makes sense that they don't want a bilingual nation, they are having such difficulty trying to communicate in English.

If we're talking about the first language of this country, then it should be Cherokee. Or Navajo.

OK, this is the funniest thing I've ever seen. Love the banner. Almost as good as the alternate budget!

Meanwhile - re: children's classics - I wonder how many of those "gentlemen" have read Through the Looking Glass, Treasure Island, Little Women, The Black Arrow, etc. etc. Because those are damn good books - and the vocab is not so easy.

Way to stay classy!

When I read things like this, I wonder at how the Republican party ever hopes to rebuild itself. In its present form, the GOP is doing everthing conceivable to marginise itself politically.

I've got nothing whatsoever against cops, judges, teachers, etc...being required to learn a little Spanish. I don't think Barack Obama has actually suggested that, though.

I do have something against the forced learning of Spanish.
As soon as it's required the door will open to Vietnamese, German, French, Dutch, and every other language of any immigrant sector of society demanding 'equal rights'.
If an individual is interested in becoming part of this nation then learning the language is not an unheard of, or ill thought request.
For us to require bilingual ability from any sector of government service would then open the requirement to make them fluent in ALL languages, lest 'discrimination' charges be leveled.
Who among you would qualify for such, and if you do qualify would you not sell your services at a much higher rate under less dangerous condition?
While it may make the job easier, is it really the job of our countrymen to cater to immigrants that have come to our shores seeking to better themselves?
Or is it possibly more incumbent upon immigrants to make of themselves something better, that benefits the nation to which they have sought to become citizens?
If it is not the responsibility of the immigrant, then what reason do we have to admit them to this nation?
I am not against immigration, but if I am invited and accept invitation to someone's home, I surely do not expect hospitality above and beyond what I would give myself.

Hmm, so what if Sotomayor read 'Snow White'? She still graduated at the top from Princeton so clearly she was doing something right.

And Brimelow, an immigrant himself, must be living in the last century if he thinks learning a second language will be an assault on the working class. That's precisely the type of education they need! America is going to continue losing manufacturing and other blue collar jobs, and if we want to remain competitive, we need to give our workers the skills to compete in the global market. Even if those who are already working may not benefit from a broader language policy, at least their children will.
