Ryan O'Neal And Farrah Fawcett To Marry

NEW YORK — Ryan O'Neal says he plans to marry Farrah Fawcett, who is struggling to overcome cancer. The 68-year-old actor says in an interview with Barbara Walters for ABC's "20/20" that he asked his longtime companion to marry him and "she's agreed." O'Neal says they will tie the knot "as soon as she can say yes."

Walters' interview with O'Neal airs Friday.

Fawcett was diagnosed in 2006 with anal cancer that has spread to her liver. The "Charlie's Angels" star and O'Neal have a 24-year-old son, Redmond.

O'Neal says the 62-year-old actress is "fighting for her life," but despite her declining health, they will "absolutely" get married.

Ryan and Farrah always had an open relationship. About ten years ago, Farrah's boyfriend James Orr got arrested for beating her up. And Ryan ran off with a much younger woman in the 1990's, too.

I wonder if they are being forced to wed to defend their rights as a couple, it's possible that could be the reason they are doing it now. If so I'm glad they are able to solve the issues that way (and end up making the best of the situation - and even turn it into a happy moment), but it's sad they have to. Domestic partners can end up treated like crap at the worst of times.

Can't help but feel that it's kind of a shallow move. Don't go too far out on that marriage limb. Now that she won't be around much longer, the risks are small that you will have to pay her anything if you divorce now.
Farrah is a lovely, wonderful woman. She deserved much better.

Farrah is a lovely, wonderful human being who deserves our prayers and respect right now in every way. She has so very bravely opened up her life and her family and her illness and her pain for all to see in the recent documentary. What an incredible thing to do for the world at large. Thank you, Farrah for doing this and turning a much bigger, brighter light that comes with celebrity on to this dreadful, dreadful enemy called cancer. May God Bless you, dear Texas girl. If marrying the father of her son is what gives her peace at this time in her life then so be it. Whom are any of us to judge?

She is a grown woman. She had the financial means to leave. Their child was grown. She's dying now everything is his fault. Please...

When Farrah was recently on TV several weeks ago, I was amazed at how good she looked for her age, without make up and her advanced illness. It's hard not to be resigned about what will happen given how many people we've lost over the years to cancer but I hope her remaining time is filled with as much happiness as possible under the circumstances. She's always had a strong will and heaven knows she's loved.

Celebraties put themselves in the public eye, but it doesn't seem this dying woman and a very imperfect man need to be put up to scrutiny and public humiliation at this time. Whatever their legal or romantic relationship, it's none of our business. If there's some under-handed dealings going on, it's still none of our business. That's why they have lawyers.
