Towelroad:

Chris Dodd has come out for full marriage equality. Dodd published an op-ed in the Meriden Record-Journal yesterday and on his blog, saying, "the fact that I was raised a certain way just isn't a good enough reason to stand in the way of fairness anymore."

Obama deputy campaign manager abandons DOMA & DADT as priorities
http://www.americablog.com/2009/07/obama-deputy-campaign-manager-abandons.html

"After two weeks of the Obama White House reeling over the gay backlash caused by the anti-gay DOMA brief, which compared gay marriage to incest and pedophilia, we now have...

First, that the burden for doing anything pro-gay in the remaining three and a half years of the Obama administration is now shifted to Congress. Obama has no role whatsoever, and no power to influence anything, even though he's still the leader of the free world.

Second, the three big gay rights priorities that Congress should be focusing on do not even include what have organically become the community's top two priorities: repealing DOMA and Don't Ask Don't Tell. They're not even mentioned in the Obama deputy's essay."

At the end of the day, some one has to take a stand, separate themselves from the "majority's opinion", and fight for freedom, basic rights and civil liberties for all. Someone has to do it, and only when those willing to lose political standings, commit such measures, do you truly understand the significance of those actions. I only hope that Obama can one day do the same, to tear the dividing line down and at least admit that there should be no distinction between Gay Marriage and that of heterosexuals. Perhaps then, things will roll into place and our community will start to gain more acceptance.

Someone should tell Chris Dodd that imitation

It's insane for the GOP to oppose gay marriage. Amongst gay people generally, the ones getting married probably tend to be conservative on "real" issues (i.e., not cultural ones, but rather economic and policy issues that actually effect people outside of their extreme private lives).

No. They are not as liberal on non-social issues, but they aren't conservative.

As black voters are more socially conservative, but vote Democratic Party, so are gays now firmly in the Democratic Party camp. Culture wars of the 90's and early 2000's cemented the bond.

Keep putting this nonsense ahead of real health insurance reform, that's a great way for the Democratic Party to squander the support of the American people. Can my party really be this dumb?

And in a related news story, Rep. Barney Frank introduced legislation decriminalizing marijuana possession.

Do you think the Senate Banking Committee Chair and the House Finance Committe Chair might be practicing a little 3-card monte?

Both pick issues that burnish their "liberal" credentials, without compromising their financial industry bona fides.

Right, for all the wrong reasons...

Boston voted last year to decriminalize carrying less than an ounce for personal use, so Frank is just moving in the direction of the electorate.

Give me a break. I certainly hope the G/L/B/T communities don't fall for this. Dodd will say and do anything to get his numbers up and win re-election.

His poll numbers are not looking good.
I'm sure he could use some gay money and support right about now.

I've come out in favor of the sky being green.

I wonder if that makes it true...

Yes, he supports gay marriage, especially for gays and lesbians in the financial/banking/insurance industries.

Am I suppose to swoon that someone came out in favor of continuing a state created institution that says we need to be partnered for life on some nonsense called love. Then six months later you are divorce.

Let me know when folks come out to abolish the insitution of marriage.

Sometimes I think that Americans create these issues that can easily be solved by letting people do what they want since they are not hurting anyone just so that we dont have to deal with the harder issues.

Why do you care if gays want to get married what is it to you? This shouldnt be an issue to be fixed. It should be a given we are wasting time on it.

The reason it angers me is that it elevates the idea of marriage. IT makes it seem like wow people are fighting to get married there must be something glorous about it. Well there ISNT.

Watch pretty soon we are going to be a society organized around marriage everyone is gonig to have to find some kind of partner. What if you dont want a partner. Is that going to be OK too? Or are you going to be looked upon as some anomaly.

You don't need to abolish marriage.

It is optional to enter into, and optional to end.

How about leaving it up to individuals to decide if they wish to do it or not?

Both civil and religious marriage are optional institutions. The former offers some key legal benefits such as the right to not have your spouse deported, financial benefits, custodial rights, etc. that either can't be achieved otherwise or require significantly more effort to attain.

I think the real is issue is more about equality than it is about marriage though for both proponents and opponents of same-sex marriage. Recognition of same-sex marriage will not only cement equality in law, but in the social sphere as well, thus, paving the way for further equality on both levels.
