The NYtimes said they had no intentions of negotiating with the Taliban for David's release.

It's nice to know he was a valued employee

That's not the point. It would have set a very dangerous precedent. Just like with the pirates. The best thing to do in those situations is to just beef up security measures for those still in the field.

Now that's one way to figure out who is rightfully detained at Gitmo vs. innocent people who were just at the wrong place at the right time. If the Taliban or Al Qaeda is negotiating for your release as part of a deal in exchange for kidnapped Westerners. . . pretty big clue that you may be a terrorist!
