COLUMBIA, S.C. — After going AWOL for seven days, Gov. Mark Sanford admitted Wednesday that he had secretly flown to Argentina to visit a woman with whom he was having an affair. Wiping away tears, he apologized to his family and gave up a national Republican Party post, but was silent on whether he would resign.

"I've been unfaithful to my wife," he said in a news conference in which the 49-year-old governor ruminated on God's law, moral absolutes and following one's heart. He said he spent the last five days "crying in Argentina."

Sanford, who in recent months had been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2012, said he would resign as head of the Republican Governors Association.

By leaving the country without formally transferring power, critics said he neglected his gubernatorial authority and put the state at risk. It wasn't clear how his staff could reach him in an emergency.

At least one state lawmaker called for his resignation. As a congressman, Sanford voted in favor of three of four articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton, citing the need for "moral legitimacy."

The affair is now over, Sanford said, describing the woman who lives in Argentina as a "dear, dear friend" whom he has known for about eight years and been romantically involved with for about a year. He said he has seen her three times since the affair began, and his wife found out about it five months ago. A newspaper published steamy e-mails between Sanford and the woman. He did not identify her.

"What I did was wrong. Period," he said. His family did not attend the news conference, and his wife Jenny Sanford said she asked the governor to leave and stop speaking to her two weeks ago. The governor said he wants to reconcile, and his wife's statement said her husband has earned a chance to resurrect their marriage.

"This trial separation was agreed to with the goal of ultimately strengthening our marriage," she said.

Sanford denied instructing his staff to cover up his affair, but acknowledged that he told them he thought he would be hiking on the Appalachian Trail and never corrected that impression after leaving for South America.

"I let them down by creating a fiction with regard to where I was going," Sanford said. "I said that was the original possibility. Again, this is my fault in ... shrouding this larger trip."

Questions about Sanford's whereabouts arose early this week. For two days after reporters started asking questions, his office had said he had gone hiking on the trail.

Cornered at the Atlanta airport by a reporter from The State newspaper, Sanford revealed Wednesday morning that he had gone to Argentina for a seven-day trip.

When news first broke about his mysterious disappearance, Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press she did not know where her husband and father of their four sons had gone for the Father's Day weekend. She said he needed time away to write.

Sanford emerged Wednesday afternoon at a news conference, where he mused openly of his love of hiking and how he used to guide trips along the Appalachian Trail, and eventually tearfully apologized to his wife, his staff and his friends _ but without yet saying what he was apologizing for.

"I hurt a lot of different folks," he said, occasionally choking up throughout the news conference that lasted about 20 minutes.

With those watching still wondering what he was admitting, Sanford said: "The odyssey that we're all on in life is with regard to heart."

Excerpts of e-mail exchanges between the governor and his mistress were published online Wednesday by The State. The governor's office wouldn't discuss the e-mails with The Associated Press, but told The State it wouldn't dispute the authenticity of the messages.

One from the governor read: "I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curve of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of the night's light _ but hey, that would be going into sexual details."

In another: "In the meantime please sleep soundly knowing that despite the best efforts of my head my heart cries out for you, your voice, your body, the touch of your lips, the touch of your finger tips and an even deeper connection to your soul."

Several residents said they were disappointed in Sanford.

"He shouldn't have lied to us. He should have been up straight," said college student Gerald Walker, 19, in downtown Columbia. "It's very embarrassing for someone in a leadership role that we are supposed to respect, especially me being a young guy."

Glenn Mitchell, of Columbia, said he felt Sanford's absence showed a lack of concern for the state.

"He left the state unattended," said Mitchell, 54, out of work recuperating from surgery. "He just hasn't been there for us."

But Warren "Cubby" Culbertson, a longtime friend who said he has been counseling Sanford, said the governor was accepting responsibility for his actions.

"Any man can fall. But it takes a real man to get up and honestly, from his heart, confess that he was wrong," Culbertson said. "And he's going to try to change."

Others were less forgiving. State Rep. Todd Rutherford, D-Columbia, called for Sanford's resignation.

"There is nothing left to save," Rutherford said. "There is no reason for him to remain as governor."

Sanford, a former three-term congressman, was elected governor in 2002. He has more than a year remaining in his second term and is barred by state law from running again.

Sanford was elected chairman of the Republican Governors Association this year after he helped raise a record $10.6 million at the group's 2008 annual dinner to help elect GOP governors. The association said Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour would assume the duties as chairman.

The libertarian-leaning Republican was seldom a firebrand. But he was known for salting tales of family life into policy discussions.

He criticized the $787 billion federal stimulus law and efforts by legislators to claim a share of it by saying in tough times a family would sit around the table and find ways to cut spending.

His vocal battle against the Obama administration over the stimulus money won praise from conservative pundits, but ultimately, a state court order required him to take the money.

Jenny Sanford, a millionaire whose family fortune comes from the Skil Corp. power tool company, has been central to Sanford's political career. She ran his congressional campaigns and his first race for governor. She was an almost daily fixture at senior staff meetings, and often could be seen driving a minivan away from the Statehouse in the mornings.

The two met when Sanford, who has an MBA, was trying his hand on Wall Street. She was working at a brokerage house when he entered a training program.

As governor, Sanford has had seemingly endless run-ins with the GOP-dominated Legislature, once bringing pigs to the House chamber to protest pork barrel spending. He also put a "spending clock" outside his office to show how quickly a proposed budget would spend state money.

Sanford's announcement came a day after another prominent Republican, Sen. John Ensign of Nevada, apologized to his GOP Senate colleagues after revealing last week that he had an affair with a campaign staffer and was resigning from the GOP leadership.

I agree there is no real difference between this and what Bill Clinton did, except for the "yuck" factor. Lord knows if we could line up all of the married cheaters....we would run out of desire to count them. Whatever love is, clearly Sanford was love struck. How many of you have loved someone so much that you were willing to give up EVERYTHING and EVERYBODY for this one person?

What Bill Clinton did is still in the "yucky" category for me, and I am a staunch and die-hard Democrat. BC never loved Monica. She was just a convenience. I guess sordid is in the eye of the beholder too.

Dear Governor Sanford:

On one hand I firmly believe that actions like this are between the husband and wife and not the general public, despite the obvious delight virtually everyone takes in a tidbit of gossip like this. On the other hand, you held yourself up as moral judge to others so it is only fitting that you be subjected to the same standard of public shame and disapproval. As for your tears etc, I don't buy it. You cry, not because you are ashamed of what you did but because you got caught and were about to be exposed for the self promoting hypocrit you are. Maybe Jesus has forgiven you, only you know what is actually in your heart. But I need a bit more convincing.

My question is, where was the local press of South Carolina? Why didn't they ferret this out long ago, and how could he have disappeared for such a long time without aggressive reporting? I think it was the same problem in Alaska, when national reporters starting revealing things about Sarah Palin that most people in Alaska did not know because the local Alaskan press was so bad.

a very sad state of affairs ..(hmm..puns intended or not ?)
yes, I understand human fallibility..we are not perfect
I also understand the ebb and flow of relationships
the "spark" disappears after kids and 20 yrs
the moral side is: you shouldn't cheat
(his wife was right:: relationship needs hard work, love, commitment)

in addition to the private side, (and I do feel for his wife, whom he treats like a loyal staff member)
there are the responsibilities of his job...is this the person you want in office?

the man seems unstable, in words and actions...perhaps he needs to resign

and he didn't "have the courage to admit it", he was "outed" by his behavior and the emails that were being released

add to this the hypocrisy , his past condemnation of bill Clinton
makes it hard to claim moral high ground

for his wife (if she wants him) and his kids I hope there is hope! and it is too bad they could not have dealt with this privately w/o it becoming a public spectacle

and what is it with governors? Sanford, Spitzer, Blagovich

I agree, Sanford made a series of BAD decisions and now must live with the consequences. What is it with governors? Spitzer, Blagovich and now Sanford are the 3 that we KNOW about; kind of makes me wonder about the other 47......

with all these affairs coming to light, one wonders what the institution of marriage is defended against, Pres Obama?

Atleast Sanford has the courage to admit and appologise to his wife. He must be appreciated and forgiven.Christ came to this world to save sinner not to condemn them for ever.

Oh for God's sake Sanford. Stop being so dramatic. Either you believed every sickening little homily the religious-righters are so infamous for, and should be shot for your devastating hypocrisy. Or you are a human being and error-prone. But you can't have it both ways. Cut your heart out if you must. But people wouldn't be killing themselves with laughter if you hadn't been so freakin holy.
The real crime is in continuing to love the woman and playing at being a righteous Southern Republican robot.

If we ever needed a Health Care Plan, we sure do need it now. We need to come to the aid of these folks heading up our Govt and making bad decisions that are affecting the American People. As I have said dereliction of duties of such magnitude should be reason to call for resignation, and seek help. We need folks capable of minding the store and being accountable in this Country, not folks secretly deserting the store, the goods and the country, while acting like a deadbeat dad. We don't know how many times this type of escape has happened or if it will happen again. We need a conductor on this train because, This appears to be a train wreck waiting to happen..

The so called heath care plan is not a health care plan! It is an insurance plan. As such it will not work. Much of the cost we have today is directly tied to two things, insurance and suing at the drop of a hat.

True, and at the cost of 1.5 trillions to 3.5 trillions, accoring to all the experts, sounds more like suicide.

SANFORD SHOULD BE FIRED IMMEDIATELY - NOT BECAUSE OF HIS ILLICIT AFFAIR, SINCE SO MANY POINTING FINGERS AT HIM DO IT ALSO - BUT BECAUSE OF HIS HYPOCRISY, HIS LYING, AND HIS DISRESPECT FOR HIS FAMILY AND HIS CONSTITUENTS.

Gov.Sanford should resign, because he went AWOL from his job not 4 an emergency, but to carry on an illicit affair with his mistress! If you, me , or anyone else disappeared from our job our employer would fire us on the spot, no ifs, ands, or buts. Aso when military personal go AWOL they are disciplined, and or put in the stockade! The double standard in this country that allows these politicians to break the law, make their own rules, and, in Gov.Sanfords case leave work without cause, explanation, or reason (except his being horney) truly amazes me !!! It's Shocking that these politicians, with the consent of some Americans, let these hypocrites carry on without any repurcusions/discipline which sets a bad example for us mere citizens. WE wouldnot get away with a 5 day disappearing act form our place of work, neither should Gov.Mark Sanford, he should resign, or be impeached! Do we know yet if he was stupid enough to use taxpayer funds for his Argentine rendevous's, hopefully it's being investigated. I feel sorry for his wife and, 4 sons!!!

I'm not surprised, from the day he "dissapeared" everything started smelling stink. These Republicans so called "religious rights" folks has proven to be the biggest hypocrites in America's politics. They will tell their "clueless base" anything that sounds good, but will not practice what they preach. Why we don't hear from ALL those right wing preachers condenming these acts. Maybe it is because they also have something in their closet. Can anyone believe that this guy Sandford was considered one of the top GOP candidates for 2012 with Sarah Palin? I can't wait for the elections.

"so called "religious rights" folks has proven to be the biggest hypocrites in America's politics"

Sorry but I must disagree! They at least admit that they did something wrong and apologize (and usually suffer some punishment). On the other hand when it is a member of, can we say, non-religious left all we here is "I did nothing wrong!" followed by a stonewall. In the hope, usually fulfilled that people will just forget. Result no apology, no punishment, no nothing.

If that does not qualify as hypocrisy the definition needs to be changed for all of us, not just Democrats in government.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:42 AM on 06/25/2009

The only reason they "admit" their wrong doing is because they got caught! The "religious right" are the biggest hypocrites on the planet. They slam others for cheating then they turn around do the same thing. Obviously hypocrisy causes stupidity?
