LOS ANGELES — "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" has blasted off at the box office with a $16 million haul from midnight screenings alone. That's the third-best midnight debut ever, behind the $18.5 million taken in last summer by "The Dark Knight" and the $16.9 million for "Star Wars: Episode III _ Revenge of the Sith" in 2005, according to box-office figures from Hollywood.com.

The big midnight numbers put the "Transformers" sequel on track for a huge five-day return through the weekend. Some box-office watchers predict it could pull in $150 million over the first five days and $100 million for the weekend alone.

The first "Transformers" opened with $70.5 million in July 2007.

I've never seen anything so mind-numbingly HORRIBLE in my life. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Why do you feel the need to warn someone about a movie? Did it kill you after seeing it? Obviously not. I've never understood that type of mentality.

If someone doesn't like a movie, why shouldn't they be free to say they didn't like it? I clicked on this article to read people's opinions of the movie.

Watching Megan Fox fixing cars is worth it: http://www.actressscene.com/2009/06/megan-fox-in-transformers.html.

Poll: What big summer movie will make money but had a crappier story?

A. Star Trek

B. Transformers 2

Man, this is a very difficult question.

The right answer is C: Terminator Salvation

Star Trek got very good reviews.

I choose C. Your poll is stupid.

Are you serious? Star Trek was great. I went with two old school Trekkies and they both loved it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:21 AM on 06/26/2009

Yes I'm quite serious. Its not about loving a story. Its about it being crappy. Tokyo Drift is a guilty pleasure, but its a crappy story - fun but crappy.

My 19 year old son came home last night after watching this movie and griped for an hour how he just wasted his hard earned money...He claimed it was over the top pop culture and predictable...a huge waste of time. He said he went in with no expectation but from the very beginning the movie sucked. He said the best part was the end and even that was painful as the movies was over two hours long....

Might I add when he was a little boy, Transformers were his favorite toys.

If your son can view things as over the top pop culture, then why would he go and see a Transformer movie? If you go to see that movie, should you have anticipated that already? Those types of movies require you to turn off the logical part of your brain in the first place. Just sounds like an attempt by you to trash the movie without it appearing that you are doing so in an obvious manner. Just say the movie was a piece of crap and leave it at that. Don't pretend that it was a letdown. Did anyone expect that Transformers was going to be a great piece of moviemaking? You probably didn't see the movie at all. There probably is no actual son.

"'Transformers' Has HUGE Midnight Opening"
So does Paris Hilton, but I don't see a headline for that.
Maybe because it's old news?

Excellent summer tent pole movie. Beautiful CGI, comedic relief and tender moments. Some critics just can't get over the fact that this movie wasn't suppose to be, nor attempted to be anything other than what it is...an action movie with alien robots. There isn't a message about world peace or an answer to the global financial crisis. It is what it is, a good movie, to be enjoyed without the need for a dictionary, western civ text book or Bible.

I agree... I've never understood why people act like these movies are supposed to be taken so seriously. It's a fun summer action movie; not Schindler's List.

Totally agree. Good summer fun, packed with action, humor, crude language, stereotypes, and sexuality. I saw it last night and IT IS AWESOME.

The critics should take a vacation until Oscar season. Until then, can we just enjoy the fluff and superficiality?

Just saw it last night...

Man, I can't believe that Megatron is Optimus' father.....what a crazy twist.

This movie doesn't pretend to be anything else than giant robots beating the tar out of each other, and Megan Fox running around in a skimpy top with little 'support' (and perfect lip gloss, even in a desert).

And that's A-OK--some things don't need to be cerebral to be fun.

The reviews that I have read are less than stellar.

Still, it's not my type of movie and I wasn't planning on going to see it, anyway.

Wow I am so not surprised. Is anyone surprised? Though the first one is a bad movie, it was fun in a rifftrax rifftrax.comm) sort of way. I knew this movie would make bank. Even with the bad reviews. Like Twilight (shudder) which had no redeeming qualities, but racked in a whole lotto' cash. It really doesn't matter. I am sad that their aren't more big blockbusters out their this summer that are good. I was spoiled last summer by all the super-hero flix. 'Cause I love me some super-heroes. I don't love women who are only there for the eye candy, racist robots, repugnant product placement, and Shia stammering like a crazy person through the whole movie. WHY SHIA? Why can't you just speak in coherent complete sentences? WHHHHHHY?

This movie is based on a children's cartoon about alien robots who turn into cars. How do you lower that bar?

GREAT summer movie. GREAT distraction from all the crazy headlines. Giant robots kicking the crap out of each other, what's not to like? Go see it and have fun, there's no law against having a good time!
