Sanford To Reimburse State For Trip To Argentina

In a statement, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said that he would reimburse the state for a trip to Argentina on which he met with his mistress.

"As noted by the Department of Commerce, I attended a trade mission with the Department of Commerce last June. As the agenda notes, the mission was spent meeting with government and private business officials in both Brazil and Argentina. This trip was handled very professionally by the Department of Commerce, and I'm proud of their work there.

"However, while the purpose of this trip was an entirely professional and appropriate business development trip, I made a mistake while I was there in meeting with the woman who I was unfaithful to my wife with. That has raised some very legitimate concerns and questions, and as such I am going to reimburse the state for the full cost of the Argentina leg of this trip," Gov. Sanford said.

According to documents released by the state Department of Commerce on Thursday, the state paid $8,644.03 in airfare alone for the trip -- more than $9,000 altogether.

Ok.....not married here. But recently spent some time with a good friend and his family.
He and his wife are a great supportive couple. They have 3 kids. 2 4yo twins and a new one that will be 1yo next month.
Both of them are haggard, pretty much worn out 24/7. But I've never seen a couple work so hard and so well at being great parents. Both of them work and have to juggle both their and the kids schedules.
I've had candid conversations with them re; the kids, the work and all. Both of them always look at me with clear eyed sobriety stating they wouldn't change any of it. Its awe inspiring.
What Sanford did was reprehensible. And I'm not a born again-er or anything like that.
I just see a guy whose wife bore and raised 4 boys, diligently worked as his campaign manager for all of his campaigns. And he throws, not only his marriage away. But what he and his wife had worked for in relation to his career. Dismissing even his constituents by vanishing for a week.
I get the whole idea of adultery being a private matter. Thats fine.
But I see a degree of betrayal that is completely off the charts.
A marriage is a partnership. Not an inconvenience.
And they say gay marriage will diminish its importance.

This is not a mistake. Adding 2 + 2 and getting 5, now that's a mistake.

This was intentional, planned, and morally bankrupt.

We, the citizens of USA, need a system whereby we can REMOVE the people we elect to "represent" us in politics when they no longer do so.

A campaign platform should be a contract with the citizens; what the person says he/she is going to do/vote must be maintained, or else the contract is void and civil and/or criminal penalties result.

Just like if you hire a contractor to put an addition on your house- you agree on what's to be done, the price, the time, the design, etc and then the contractor arbitrarily changes what YOU are paying for!

Would you not press criminal/civil charges against such a person?
These same principles must be held towards public officials.
Otherwise, you cannot expect anything different.
