Daily Finance:

As it happens, Nielsen, the ratings firm, recently started tracking such a metric. It's called Nielsen Fusion, and it combines viewership and online usage data. The Fusion rankings for April show CNN with a commanding lead over both MSNBC and Fox News when it comes to reach among all viewers. (That's looking at the full day, not just primetime.) CNN (which is part of the same media conglomerate as Daily Finance parent AOL) reached 125.3 million people in April, versus 105.5 milllion for MSNBC and 104.3 million for Fox.

Fusion ratings is a start to acknowledge the changing way American's view programming. I'm glad its being measured this way now. I watch TV, both live and DVR, the computer and when stuck in the middle of nowhere, my phone.

"Fox, of course, views CNN's emphasis on a newfangled measurement as a mark of its failure to secure the old-fashioned ratings advertisers care about. "

This quote sums it up. Newfangled is not in the lexicon of Fox or its viewers, whereas old-fashioned is the hallmark of Fox and its viewers. I love to see the arrogant attitude at Fox as they ignore the wave of of the future and how it will negatively impact them. Plus, the fact that MSNBC is first in the viewership of younger people, the truly crucial demographic.

It's important to note that I will typically see fox news playing on public TVs. Like mcdonalds, my bank, and gas stations. Perhaps it is a conspiracy, but more likely the bosses that make the rules are picking their favorite stations. So while Fox is gaining ratings, there are tons of innocents like me forced to listen to as we wait for the slow bank teller. I don't know how they do TV ratings, but maybe those places make a difference.

Oh! And old stodgy Fox viewers don't like these new crazy computers...

When you are in a public place and Fox is on the TV, you need to complain and tell the manager that you find it offensive. Most merchants are trying to make money, not a political statement, so they might turn off Fox if they get enough complaints.

My 70 plus neighbor proudly told me how he has email--complete with a dial-up connection. LOL

Yeah but that 18 yr old manager at McD's can't stand up to her boss like that! She needs to make sure she can get prom night off... Ha

But for realz my friend worked for a gas station where it was mandated by corporate (i think they owned a chain of stations in the city, among other things) to always have it on in all their stores. Had you complained to him he would have said "I know, right?!" But they wouldn't have listened to him anyway.

Fusion ratings. That makes sense. No matter what FOX claims, it is NOT America's leading source of news and information. Fox is less credible than the Nation Enquirer.

They shouldn't be. Faux noise has mediocre ratings as an entertainment channel which is exactly what it is.

Besides, I don't want my news to be popular because mean people are screeching hate filled venom and lies at me, I prefer my news to be based in fact so I can do the thinking myself.

"We used to be a television business," says Jack Wakshlag, head of research for Turner Broadcasting.

That's all he needed to say, except that maybe "CNN used to be a reputable news operation" as well. These days it's just Fox-lite.

Why are they comparing FOX with news channels?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:03 AM on 06/29/2009

This makes sense, especially considering a lot of Fox viewers can't read and/ or are computer illiterate.

"The Fusion rankings for April show CNN with a commanding lead over both MSNBC and Fox News when it comes to reach among all viewers."

About time... I never really cared much about ratings, but stopped paying attention completely a few years ago because I knew the internet shift was scewing the results.

Guess now O'Reilly can beat his chest about having the least modernized viewers.

The lack of universal basic cable lineups also skews the results. A lot of markets do not carry MSNBC on basic cable, but have it available on extended cable for a fee. I only watch MSNBC because I pay a premium to do so. They also do not figure in people who download podcasts etc. instead of direct viewership. Ratings are really hard to take seriously in light of all the extenuating factors that are not factored into the calculations.

Exactly right. I switch to CNN for that timeframe. I cannot handle Joe the Jerk. Not even in small doses. And if Mika were any more coward.ly to defend her alleged liberal posture, then she would be a jelly fish.
