Top Ten Surprising Facts About Governor Mark Sanford (VIDEO)

First Posted: 07/27/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:30 PM ET

Dave devoted yet another top ten list to Governor Mark Sanford last night. He started by chastising Sanford for betraying his family and the people of South Carolina, then launched into a list of "facts" about Sanford that would have surprised you a week ago, but now seem reasonable.

Letterman referenced his fight with Sarah Palin in the list saying "Sanford has made it safe for me to joke about Republican governors again." This, of course, was about a joke Dave made about Palin and one of her daughters and the ensuing media melee.

Hold the presses people.
Sanford did not cheat!

Everyone knows that it's not considered cheating if it's in a different area code.
This guy went to another continent. Now that's commitment to the rule. Most rule-abiding people would have just gone to another area code. This guy not only goes to another country, but he goes to a different continent. Now you have to admire that.
And everyone's giving him grief for following basic rules one learns in college. It's just not fair.

I think Dave relishes being a father and can't fathom Sanford flying off to be with his mistress over Father's Day weekend instead of being with his kids. I hope Letterman milks this Sanford fiasco for as long as he can.

"1. Entered politics because he enjoyed polling."

That took me a moment. LOL!

"2. Made it safe for me to make jokes about Republican governors again."

Priceless.

"Put himself above his family and the people of South Carolina."

That says it all, and doesn't even mention his endless lecturing on responsibly and morality.

There is a special place for these guys, and it's getting crowded there.

I hope not to offend others . . .
(cheaters and sorted adulterers)

I abhor adultery, it left deep scares on my family. At 49 years old
I have never strayed in any relationship. (for record)

If this guy would put his selfish needs and desire above
all others in his life. (wife and children, family and friends
people of his state, etc.) He cannot be trusted in much
of his delusional thinking and behaviors.

Especially with the current state of humanity,
in very poor judgment, on so many levels.

He has got to go, with the rest of the rotten politicians
like Blago. We need to ditch these slimballs
ALL OF EM!

I think you're missing the point. Over the years there have been a lot of people who contributed much to the public good (No, I am not counting Sanford among them), yet had screwed-up personal lives which included adultery.

The big issue here for his "employers", the people of South Carolina, should be that he let his personal life undermine his ability to perform the duties of his job. He went AWOL for five days just to visit his mistress. That's grounds for firing.

I actually think that you missed the poster's point. Sometimes we are in too big of a rush to respond, instead of reading thoughtfully to other's comments.
The poster is clearly looking at this from within a family, and its' effects. Not to mention the charecter of a person who cheats leaves them vulnerable to many other vices. If one cannot be trusted to uphold this, one of the most sacred of oaths, there is no way I would trust him much futher.
The people of South Carolina are responsible for their own families, and dare I say, most of them probably run their home better than the Governor. The injured party is clearly not the state, but a Family in ruin.

I'm a democrat and have no love for Sanford.

But back in the '90s, my response to Clinton's infidelity in the Oval Office with a 21 year old intern was, "it's none of my business." I blamed the GOP for making it difficult for Clinton to govern instead of blaming him for letting his weakness cause these problems.

So, to be consistant, I have to say this is none of my business too. If you were just as outraged at Clinton, then have at it. If not, you really have to question your attitude.

And yes, I know that some of the Republican adulterers, like Ensign, condemned Clinton. That makes them hypocrites. I don't consider a hypocritical politician to be any big news.

As a life long democrat, I didn't vote for Clinton's second term because if his wife couldn't trust him, how could I. As this relates to Sanford, Clinton wasn't a hypocrite about preaching a holier than thou message to everyone on family values.

I was hiking on the Appalachian Trail when I watched this. No, that's a lie, I was messin' with an Argentinian woman. Anyway, I'm against cheating. Huh, that makes sense, elect me. Keep it up Dave, go after this SOB, he is cr$%.
