Expensive Homes

ABC News:

There's been a lot of denial among luxury homeowners. In 2006, it was thought that the luxury market wouldn't suffer the same fate as the broader market. A year later, high-end home buyers were thought to have endless, deep pockets, further insulating the top-tier from the cratering economy. As the nation's markets in 2008 went from bad to worse, some in the industry claimed that the dearth of trophy properties outstripped supply.

"Poor" John and Cindy McCain - Now they will have trouble selling off any of the seven homes they own

Why do so few people need to live in so much space? It's obscene. And a completely inefficient and wasteful use of land in a time when populations are rising beyond the earth's resources. Just wait - land redistribution will be the next war in the coming years and not before time either.

I would buy a home like one of those if I were to live at least a 1000 years.
But for a mere 70+ life expectancy (maybe 50 these days), the ROI on those homes makes them not worth it.

The sad part about this story, is this is jusyt history repeating itself....during the "gilded" age of the early 20th century, monstrosities such as these ridiculously large estates were common in many areas of the Northeast, today those large homes have been converted to apartment buildings and office buildings. After they went out of favor and became unaffordable to maintain by most who's wealth was not "real".

Those who fail to learn the lessons of the past....it was pathetic then and is still pathetic now. People's priorities and desire to be seen as "royalty" seems to never end....it has gone on many times throughout history....."the more things change the more they remain the same"

On the list/slide show ya notice too they are very vague about the neighborhood where some of these are located, they could be anywhere on the planet.

One architect has stated that anything over 5000sf is a structure not a house.
Not only the house you get but I'm sure you need a staff just to maintain it, have to dust/clean all those moldings, statuary, landscaping etc. not to mention those who do the cooking, nannying etc.

So what happens after they die off or lose it etc. Well Grey Gardens went decrepit for awhile, Hearst Castle is now a state park, Biltmore is a tourist attraction, most castles and palaces in europe are the same, that tackily decked out mansion in BH owned by an arab sheik is demo'd and they are building what I think are 9 'villas' on the property.......Candy's manse replaced Bing's but ya kinda wonder if she finally sells it of at reduced price to a developer who will do the same, subdivide the lot for like 3 'mansionettes'.

Seems to me that being that rich comes with the very serious down-side of having to put up with other rich people.

I know, I know, they aren't all bad, some are downright great and very giving, but 7/10 times, they are vein, insecure, and have awful taste.

Anyway, my mom used to tell me that no one ever said they had too much money, and its true. If you live comfortably and are relatively sure where your next meal is coming from , you are better off than 60% of the population.

Wealth or no wealth, death is the great equalizer. Remember that monstrosity that Aaron Spelling built that is wife is trying to sell? It didn't keep him alive beyond his time. I'm sure most people want to create a 'home' that is an expression of their taste and their lifestyle even if it's a modest place but some of these gigantic 'hotels' are an expression of what, power, superiority, ego, etc?

Death might be the equalizer, but while they're alive - YEE-HAAA!!!!
When you need a GPS to find the nearest bathroom, your house is too big.

Overpriced hotels passing for homes, Exhibit A, the greed of America and the inequality of capitalism.
