SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — A man who works three jobs to support his family _ including one as a limousine driver _ has won a $39 million jackpot in California's SuperLotto Plus.

Clyde Persley, who is married with a 4-year-old daughter, turned in his winning ticket on Tuesday night and should get his first check for about $16 million in four to six weeks, said a California lottery spokeswoman.

The 49-year-old Santa Cruz man operates candy-making machines for Santa Cruz Nutritionals, drives a limousine and picks up extra hours at a restaurant.

He says his first moves will be taking his wife on a trip to Hawaii and hiring a financial adviser.

He bought his winning ticket at a Santa Cruz market where he has played the lottery twice a week for several years.

Shame that the US taxes lottery winnings (not in Canada!! Hurray!!)

He should put half of it in fungible assets like gold -- have to make it harder for team Obama to tax it away later.

No tax on lottery winnings, legal gay marriage and universal health care too.

I love being Canadian.

Don't worry Dem supporters.
Obama will introduce a retroactive Lottery Tax to take all that money away from him and give it to those more deserving ... like this winner after the government takes all his money.

All HIS money? The lottery winnings are paid by all the people who bought losing tickets.

If I won $39 million - but only ended up with $8 million after taxes - I would still be happier than most California clams!

Good for him, I hope he does something with the money that he wants and not what everyone else wants him to do. Also save a little for the future.
Happy for him.

Better to have a hard working middle class american win the lottery than Donald Trump.

Financial advisers have stolen alot more than this guy won. So I would be very wary. Anyway, I'm glad a hard working Joe won.

Study after study has shown that Mutual Fund managers UNDERPERFORM the general market by a wide margin and by a very wide margin when you include their fees. These guys are worse than average.

He should put some of the money in hard assets like gold and be prudent with the rest .... and for pete's sake he should take a long vacation and move so that he can't get hustled by long lost relatives.

Hope he is smart enough to get good investment advice from a certified broker. Most big winners end up worse off than they were before.

Hey, it's good to read he's gotten a financial advisor. Next, change your phone to an unlisted number and refuse all calls from "relatives". I can only wish good things for the winner.

I would NEVER give out my name if I won!

Actually you have no choice. Lottery rules state you must agree to advertising, etc.
09:57 AM on 06/28/2009
You don't have that choice.
By accepting the money you agree to be used by the lottery for advertisemnet.

I believe you can pick up your lump sum check anonymously. A great-grandfather in southeast Washington, D.C. recently won a huge powerball and had his lawyer pick up the check. He also established an LLC.

The following link lists a few other anonymous winners.
