CEBU, Philippines - The Filipino inmates who shot to global fame with a YouTube video of their "Thriller" dance swayed and stomped again Saturday in a behind-bars tribute to their idol, Michael Jackson.

After being told of Jackson's death Thursday in Los Angeles, the 1,500 inmates at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center hit the exercise yard, practicing for nine hours Friday night -- and into the wee hours of Saturday morning -- for the show. They took breaks only to eat or when it rained, said professional choreographer Gwendolyn Lador, hired by the prison to teach the inmates the dance.

"I felt sad because we lost our idol," said inmate Wenjiel Resane, who plays the role of Jackson's girlfriend in the video.

Crisanto Nieri, 38, was feeling a little extra stress. He danced Jackson's part in "Thriller."

"Even as a kid, he was already my idol," said Nieri, who is serving seven years on drug charges. "I am happy that our video became famous, but I feel some pressure to perform well."

A crowd of 700 Cebuanos and foreign tourists watched the performance from a second-floor corridor, swaying to the music and applauding as the inmates, dressed in orange prison T-shirts and sweat pants, stomped and clapped in unison in the hilltop prison, behind thick stone walls topped by electrified razor wire.

Other numbers included "Ben," "I'll Be There" and "We Are the World." The inmates then held up a 5-by-10 foot (1.5-by-3 meter) tarpaulin showing Michael Jackson holding a sword with his name written below it.

Others waved the flags of the Philippines and other nations.

Before the show, the performers dedicated a prayer to Jackson's family.

"I was sad because one of the songs of Michael Jackson, `Thriller,' made us famous around the world," said Francis Mercader, 36, who has spent a year in detention while on trial for drug charges.

Byron Garcia, the Cebu provincial security consultant who came up with the idea of adding synchronized dancing to poorly attended exercise sessions, said he was surprised by the popularity of the 2007 video -- one of more than a dozen inmate dance numbers he has posted on YouTube.

"Thriller" has attracted 24.3 million hits since it was posted two years ago, with nearly a million of them in the 24 hours since news of Jackson's death spread.

The inmates "consider Michael Jackson as a god here," Garcia said. "If not for Michael Jackson, they would not have this international recognition."

"The fame brought them back their self-esteem," he told reporters. "So that's why we have these public performances."

Inmate Alfredo Gaballo, 52, says Jackson "inspired us, so we are all sad about his death."

"The performance today has been amazing," said Karen Benrad, 29, from London. She and about two dozen foreign and local tourists later joined the inmates at the prison quadrangle, dancing to the tune of "Macarena" and "I just can't get enough."

Kim Hua-sung, a 23-year-old South Korean student in Cebu who watched the inmates' performance, said he is also a Jackson fan. "I'm sad that I can't listen to more songs from him."

In Taiwan, two top Michael Jackson impersonators donned fedora hats and sequined outfits Saturday, moonwalking to "Billie Jean" in their own tribute to the pop star.

Thirty-year-old Wang Chih-wei told The Associated Press he secured a photo op with his idol during Jackson's whirlwind tour in 1993 after winning an impersonation contest.

"I didn't know much English so I could only tell him, 'I love you,'" Wang said. "He was very friendly. I melted when he put his hand on my shoulder for the photo."

What about the real Michael and his mission in life? I just wish they will talk more about all the good great things he did for others, of the lives he changed, the ones he inspired, the ones he helped feed, the ones that made positive difference upon meeting him and sharing with him.

Life is about sacrifices, Michael surely had his share, not anyone could have done all he did nor go through all that he did, above all that is said and all he did, and continue doing, now i do believe that there are angels on earth, Michael did what so many of us dont do, care for each other and love for humanity.

This is the first post-MJ death thing that has really moved me to tears, when they got to We Are The World. What an impact, and what a great loss.

if any one doubts that Michael Jackson's music had a profound effect on the world this video should convince them. Like John Lennon, Jackson used his iconic fame to promote a message of world peace & love. In spite of an obviously anguished personal life, that message never changed & it did change things as witnessed by this powerful video. Watch the video of We Are The World. Who but Michael could have convinced such a group of luminaries to "check their egos at the door" & work without benefit of pay, 'goody bags' & other useless frills to record a song that ,like Lennon's "Imagine" , is all about joining collectively as a postive force for change.

Why can't we get our prisoners to do this stuff??

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:20 PM on 06/28/2009

Because here, it's against the law to threaten prisoners with death for refusing to dance.

Because here, anytime conservatives hear about dance classes in prison, it's "Oh why are we giving prisoners dance classes, how dare they have fun and exercise in prison!"

The filipino prisoners in this video are not doing this as a show of love for MJ. They're doing this because they are forced to. They have no choice in the matter. They are forced to practice for 12 to 16 hours a day, wearing sandals (bloody feet).
As much as we may like MJ, this video is not proof of how beloved he was. It's simply proof that prisoners get mistreated throughout the world.

There are prisoners around the world experiencing horrors we will never see (and many wrongfully imprisoned). People ooh and aah over videos like this because as a whole we're not trained to question what is really happening. The justice system in other countries isn't quite as "fair" as the one in the U.S.

You guys can't read, but you can type. How is that possible?

It says right in the article that the prison warden started including dance synchronization in exercise classes in order to INCREASE ATTENDANCE--a clear indication that attendance was optional.

But nooo, you'd rather just loll in your exceptional American superiority--nevermind that American CIA agents are still torturing innocent prisoners in Bagram.

If you are saying "you guys" meaning my comment as well then I will absolutely agree with your statement about the CIA, which is why I said that people as a whole don't question what is really happening. In our country, in other countries, there's a lot of bad stuff going on. But I wouldn't quite make this prison warden sound like he's operating a dance studio if I were you.

Please, read before you write. There are plenty of better things to force inmate to do than force them to dance to Michael Jackson. And spare us the moral superiority.

Opening one's eyes to what is real is hardly "moral superiority". The poster above wanted us to see another view of what's happening in that prison aside from what the public is generally seeing all over the media. Is that wrong to see another side of things and have another opinon?

This has to be the most heartfelt, beautiful tribute of all. We are truly one world, and it's time for us to realize that we need to show love while we are here. I listen the worlds in "Ben," and "I'll be there" and equate them with this lonely man. All he wanted was love, and he never knew just how much he had.

To these prisoners, they may be behind bars, but the freedom in their hearts can allow them to fly. Thanks to all of them for expressing so beautifully the love the world feels for Michael. May he be looking down now and saying to himself "I did it. I changed the world. I am now immortal."

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen of Cebu.

Wow, not that is love! If only Barak Obama wasn't so jealous because of that insensitve comment he put out. No parent wants to be told their child lived a sad and tragic life. God Bless you MJ and my thoughts go out to his family!

Give me a break.
If OB commented solely on his superstardom, the critics would attack him for ignoring the past allegations. If he only commented on the allegations, he would be attacked for ignoring MJ's impact on the world through his music.
His response was a careful diplomatic comment on something that he is affected by personally just like every other person who has aged while listening to Jackson. He is surely as affected and saddened as every other person who was a fan at any point in their lives.

Making mountains out of molehills is what your doing.

PLEASE READ:
These prisoners have no choice. They are forced to dance whether they want to or not. Those who refuse to dance are "disappeared" and are conveniently said to "have escaped."
The prisoners are forced to practice 12 to 16 hours a day in sandals, bloody feet or not.
Byron Garcia, the guy who oversees all this, basically has complete control over everyone there and has the prisoners dance for friends and guests whenever he so chooses.

We clueless Americans might want to dig a little deeper before we go all mushy over a youtube video.

Its a touching tribute. Well done!

Sorry dude this doesn't look like 12 to 16 hours practice like a baton death march.. It looks like they couldn't wait to sign up... They're freaking prisoners and there is nothing easy about their lives. Nothing.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:27 AM on 06/28/2009

I would look eager to sign up if I had no choice in the matter. I choose living and dancing over being "disappeared."

So here we are, USA, the country with the most incarcerated people in the world, criticizing other countries for their corrections practices. Why don't we start being more humane at home before criticizing what the Filipinos do with their inmates.
We don't see the insides of our prisons because many of them are run by private corporations and in this country, the penal system is a growth industry.
We live in a police state. We don't let our prisoners dance to MJ cause they're too busy cleaning our highways from all the trash our "free" citizens throw out their speeding cars.
Don't get me started....

What a great way to stay in shape.

The State sure knows how to take care of zombie's and people. I wonder how many guards they have at that prison? With all those inmates it looks like Pelican Bay.

my neighbor has been playing that song for 48hrs. not sure how long before the zombies come.
