Sanford might hold onto his current job. His future in the party for higher office is over. What Sanford did was wrong and has permanently damaged his family. But it's amazing how the left is hyperventilating over Sanford as if they think they've found the holy grail of hypocrisy in the GOP. That conclusion is not sustainable. Sanford is done. However if he were a Democrat, the party would've circled the wagons around him like they did with Clinton. Or their cohorts would've kept it out of the news until the Enquirer forced the story on them as in the case with Edwards. http://theclosetconservative.com
Falling in Love is not a sin. Lord knows we need more people in love.
More power to them.
Updated article from The State newspaper that broke this story. Hints of more than one woman Sanford had an affair with:

I talk to ny dearest friend who lives in SC, says so many people want him to resign but he has big money people behind him and they will hard to dislodge and get any sort of fair hearing or trial.
These republicans need to learn to stop running around with their c.h.e.n.e.y hanging out of their pants.
"South Carolina Democrats call for investigation..." What, both of them?
Absent real evidence of wrong doing in a legal sense there should not be an investigation. PLEASE let the Clinton/Gingrich era of government by fishing expedition "investigations" end!
No five words : caught with his pants down
Investigate what? We know everything at this point.
We probably don't know everything at this point which is why he should consider
resigning asap before investigations begin and possible criminal charges can be filed against him.
Can you folks giving him some break? Sanford is a God fearing man. His party invented the concept of family values, not you liberals. He should get a free ride.
Seems like an investigation would cost the state a ton of money that they don't have. Maybe they could use some of the stimulus money to cover it.
Ms. Fowler has it wrong here. I am a S.C. Democrat, but at this point in time, I think he should just remain in office. People from outside the state do not realize the alternative - the Lt. Gov. - and it is not good!
Sanford has confessed tp the only "wrong" against the taxpayers and that was his sidetrip from Brazil to Argentina while on the trade mission. He has offered to pay that money back. So, let him pay and let it go.
We have 12 per cent unemployment, 1/5 of our population has no health insurance. We have some very serious issues in S.C., and to pursue an investigation with the sole purpose of further humiliation and retaliation would be expensive and time consuming.
The larger issue here is that voters, and not just S.C. voters, should do the investigating BEFORE the election. Stop falling for hot button issues - sanctity of marriage, gay rights, abortion - and find out who you are voting for.
One might suggest that the unemployment and lack of health insurance is directly related to electing republicans and trusting that the only indiscretions they have committed are those that have been made public.
If the guy will cheat on his wife, why do you think he will be true to his constituents? If a guy will blow a legitimate shot at the presidency for some chick in Argentina when he had a smart and pretty wife at home who supported him to the hilt, why do you think he might have the good judgment to run the (great) state of South Carolina?
Obviously, these are questions for South Carolinians to answer for yourselves ... not a decision for outsiders, even close neighbors. But the curiosity stands.
