LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson still had a faint pulse and his body was warm when his doctor found him in bed and not breathing, a lawyer for the doctor told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Edward Chernoff also said Dr. Conrad Murray never prescribed or gave Jackson the drugs Demerol or OxyContin. He denied reports suggesting Murray gave Jackson drugs that contributed to his death.

Chernoff told the AP that Murray was at the pop icon's rented mansion on Thursday afternoon when he discovered Jackson in bed and not breathing. The doctor immediately began administering CPR, Chernoff said.

"He just happened to find him in his bed, and he wasn't breathing," the lawyer said. "Mr. Jackson was still warm and had a pulse."

Jackson's family requested a private autopsy in part because of questions about Murray, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said Saturday. Murray also told the family an autopsy should be performed, Chernoff said.

Three days after the death of the King of Pop, celebrities descended on Los Angeles for a spectacular celebration of Jackson's life at the annual BET awards show.

Joe Jackson, Michael's father, walked on the red carpet wearing a black hat, sunglasses and a dark suit. He planned make an onstage appearance, show publicist Bobbi Marcus said.

"I just wish he could be here to celebrate himself," he said. "Sadly, he's not here, so I'm here to celebrate for him."

In a statement read at the show, Jackson's parents said they solely had the personal and legal "authority for our son and his children." It was their strongest declaration yet about their son's affairs.

People close to Michael Jackson have said since his death that they were concerned about his use of painkillers. Los Angeles County medical examiners completed their autopsy Friday and said Jackson had taken unspecified prescription medication.

Chernoff said any drugs the doctor gave Jackson were prescribed in response to a specific complaint from the entertainer.

"Dr. Murray has never prescribed nor administered Demerol to Michael Jackson," Chernoff said. "Not ever. Not that day. ... Not Oxycontin (either) for that matter."

Paramedics were called to the mansion while the doctor was performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), according to a recording of the emergency call.

Because Jackson was so frail, Murray "administered with his hand behind his back to provide the necessary support," Chernoff said. Some have speculated the doctor botched the CPR.

"He's a trained doctor," Chernoff said. "He knows how to administer CPR."

Medics spent three-quarters of an hour trying to revive Jackson. He was pronounced dead later at University of California Los Angeles Medical Center.

Murray was interviewed by investigators for three hours Saturday. His spokeswoman called Murray "a witness to this tragedy," not a suspect in the death, and police described the doctor as cooperative.

The attorney said Murray will wait to speak publicly until after the police and forensics investigation is complete.

"One of his best friends just died, essentially in his arms _ yeah he's looking forward to telling his story," Chernoff said.

Chernoff also said the promoter of Jackson's 50-show London concerts, AEG Live, owes the cardiologist $300,000.

"His contract with the promoters states he would receive an amount of money each month to be his (Jackson's) personal physician and they have failed to honor that contract," Chernoff said. "They are two months behind."

Randy Phillips, president and CEO of AEG Live, acknowledged the contract called for Murray to be paid $150,000 a month, but said the contract required Jackson's signature.

"Michael never signed the contract," Phillips said.

He also said the doctor's claim for payment may be against Jackson's estate, not AEG which was merely advancing the money to Jackson.

A private pathologist hired by the Jackson family completed a second, private autopsy Saturday, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing unnamed people familiar with the case.

A second autopsy can allow the family to get some information about a death almost immediately, including signs of heart, brain or lung disease or fresh needle punctures, said Dr. Michael Baden, a medical examiner not involved in the Jackson case.

"Usually if it looks normal with the naked eye, it looks normal under the microscope," said Baden, who recently performed a second autopsy on actor David Carradine.

Los Angeles County coroner's officials said their autopsy found no indication of trauma or foul play. But because of additional tests, an official cause of death could take weeks to determine.

There was no word from the Jackson family on funeral plans. Many of Jackson's relatives have gathered at the family's Encino compound, caring there for Jackson's three children.

Al Sharpton, who arrived in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, said he was heading to the Jackson compound and would talk with the family about how to memorialize the late pop star. Sharpton said they want to hold memorials in key cities around the globe and also planned a memorial service Tuesday at the Apollo Theater in New York.

It also wasn't clear what would become of Jackson's Neverland Ranch. Investor Thomas Barrack previously set up the joint venture with Michael Jackson after the singer nearly lost the ranch to foreclosure.

Barrack feels close to family members and wants to hear their thoughts on how best to honor Jackson's memory, said Owen Blicksilver, a spokesman for Colony Capital LLC, the Los Angeles-based firm where Barrack is chairman and CEO. The investor joined Jackson's brother Jackie, Jermaine and Tito for lunch Saturday at the sprawling Santa Barbara County property.

A White House adviser said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that President Barack Obama had written to the Jackson family to express his condolences.

The real story here in all this about Michael Jackson's death is what lead him to be so mixed up and destructive towards himself. The poor man never had a chance to be "normal". Even without more than observing his forays into the media and his interviews. This person was emotionally and psychically tortured horribly throughout his life. Whatever shreds of childhood that remained he white knuckled those and went on to escape into the only world he could. Music and show business. He was deformed emotionally by his father's treatment of him and he went on to complete that deformity through plastic surgery. He couldn't evolve because of this. I am sure it affected his lack of development as an artist as the years started to pass. He became larger than life and didn't truly have the maturity and emotional stability to deal with it. Money and fame became the enablers. I think people forget there was a human being that suffered and knew what he lost as a person. I don't think he ever was able to overcome that. I think it overcame him last week. Fame and fortune aren't balms for lost childhood and a tortured soul. Where were the good influences in this man's early life? I think it's important to celebrate this wonderful artist but also more important to contemplate at what cost to his inner peace, happiness and stability this thing called fame cost him. He died at 50.

I have to confess. Six months ago if you'd mentioned Michael Jackson to me, I would have turned up my nose.

At a Father's Day celebration, my sister provided a download she'd made of songs from our past as we'd all gathered together. One of the songs was Got to Be There.

I was blown away and floored by how beautiful his voice was. I'd grown so accstomed to griping about how he'd mangled his face and lightened his skin. But upon hearing the absolute purity of his voice, I came out of that very real anger I'd harbored for him and began to appreciate his music again.

Now, I'm speechless with the magnitude of the loss and sorry I ever presumed to judge someone I didn't even know...

Glad you said this. I'm the same way. I've been watching some YouTube clips of his performances from 10, 12 yrs ago and earlier - and am reminded again of just how talented a performer this man was. WOW is all I can say when I watch them. He was electrifying. I am left wondering if this man ever had a true friend in his life - someone who just wanted to be his friend, who didn't want anything from him. Someone he could call or could call him and say - let's go get a coffee or go to dinner or whatever. It doesn't seem so. How sad that is. A man who gave so much to so many in the end felt so alone. Hearbreaking.

Electrifying is a very good word for it. Amazing once in a lifetime talent and I'm just happy to have been around to observe and at least share in a portion of it.

I was born in 1974 and so I was of an age to remember about 90 percent of Jackson's career during his adult years. I thought he was awesome when I was a kid. (Shoot, I remember when Alfonso RIbeiro's claim to fame was being the second-best moonwalker in the world after Michael Jackson, and putting out an instructional Breakdancing 101 record called "Breakin' and Rappin'.") In the mid-nineties I got this notion Jackson was uncool or something, possibly because of the cosmetic changes and the odd rumors. After he died I looked him up on YouTube. It's funny, the song that got stuck in my head for a few days was "Don't Stop (Til You Get Enough)"--one of his oldest adult-years hits, and the video for it shows his original face and hair, right down to the Afro, and his smile is unadulterated, sheer joy.

ENOUGH and PATHETIC are the two words which best describe this morbid coverage by a media which is complicit in creating " news " where none of value to the public exists. The " family " has their objectives clearly outlined. They intend to profit from this death as they did during his life.

Joe Jackson only wants to cash in on Michael's death. Did you know he and his wife had a $24 million bakruptcy in 1999. Michael's estate would come in very handy right about now. How are they paying for their current "compound"? I'm surprised that he isn't charging admision to those who want to view MJ's body at Neverland (which I think is goulish. I only hope the Funeral Home did a good job on him, as the Coroner's report was not pretty)

To the commenter's about Joe, Joe and Katherine are legally separated and have been since for at least 10 years. Joe actually lives in Vegas and Katherine kept the compound in Encino. Only reason Joe is speaking now, is cuz he is the patriarch. Notice everyone else is doing the planning for the funeral, moving the belongings or consoling the children.

No one wants to connect the dots and say it right out loud, but the fact is that MJ committed suicide. He had been killing himself for years. This time he just finished the job. He took a long look at himself, disfigured, gaunt, ridden with drugs, and filled with self-loathing--and decided that he'd had it.

The family is talking about suing people, doctors and aides and the like, but this is the time for them to look within and ask themselves if they weren't most responsible for his death, and for his bizarre life. A young, clearly sensitive kid pushed into the "music" business before he could even read, then subsequent fame, wealth, and lack of parental guidance and supervision may have been what started him down his path of self-destruction.

Perhaps one last farewell, then the book should be closed, without a search for vengeance or unending battles.

It doesn't sound as though the doctor is going to get paid any time soon. AEG is saying that Jackson never signed the contract, and that the doctor needs to get paid by the estate. With Joe claiming he and his wife to be the be the legal authority for Michael and his children - I don't think they will be in a hurry to pay the bill. This is going to be a complicated mess.

The doctor worked on Michael for 40 minutes before the staff called 911. If you listen to the 911 call it contradicts what Conrad's lawyer is spewing. When someone has experiences cardiac arrest their life expectancy diminishes 10% with each minute that passes. Paddles would have saved him. My BF's brother is a cardiologist who travels with well known Prime Minister - He carries a portable defib, medication to stimulate the heart, and all medication that the PM needs in case of emergency. This Dr. at the very least should have had a portable Defib! That would have been the difference between MJ's life and death. This guy is trying to get out of malpractice liability.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:50 AM on 06/29/2009

AED - a little machine that shocks the heart rhythm. His "cardiologist" should have had a fully manual one, and drugs, not just lidocaine.
They cost a 1000 dollars. MJ probably would still be here. Have a heart band monitor to his cardiologist's pager.
However, he would have died from some other thing down the road. He abused his body too much.
Hypocalcemia, megloblastic anemia, hypoalbunemia, chronic renal failure - all things a routine blood test would have picked up I wouldn't be surprised if they showed up. I'm guessing he didn't want to go to a hospital so he hired his own Doctors who would look the other way with his drug addiction problems.

STOP clicking on links to articles about his death or investigation. If you are so hateful that you can't find a place in your heart to respect those who grieve, then go read something else!!

They're starting to distance the Phelps clan as far away as legally possible from the funerals of American military who died in Iraq. OK, Jackson didn't take a bullet for his country, but it should be obvious to you he was well-loved. How would you like it if your favorite relative died and a bunch of people who hated him showed up to the funeral and started saying hateful things? Then don't do that to other people.

What I do not understand is the fact that CPR was administered. I have been CPR certified and to many CPR classes. The one thing we are told is to NEVER ADMINISTER CPR IF THE PERSON HAS A PULSE. This Dr. Murry should have KNOWN THAT!! Dr. Murry, said that when he found Mr. Jackson that Jackson had a faint pulse and was still warm to the touch. If this is true then Dr. Murry could be responsible for Jackson's death. If indeed Michael had a faint pulse but was not breathing, then Dr. Murry should have only breathed for Jackson until medical aid arrived and only performed CPR if there was not a pulse. The very act of performing CPR on a person that HAS A PULSE can indeed stop all heart activity and therefore result in manual cardiac arrest. Has anyone looked into this??? Does anyone agree???

Through all the CPR classes I have been to this question has never come up. I will have to make sure to ask it next one I attend. I would however, think that a solid surface would be better for performing CPR. You could probably perform CPR on a bed but I would tend to think you might have to press harder, in order to get a good beat out of one heart, because of the flexibility of the mattress. I have only had to preform CPR once in my life and that was at a travel center I used to work for. A driver went into cardiac arrest while getting ready to pump gas. I preformed CPR for several minutes until the ambulance arrived and EMS took over. The driver was never revived and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. So I can't quite answer that question definitively. I can say that from what I have been taught, CPR is not to be performed if any pulse is present within a 15 second period. If a pulse is found and the patient is not breathing, then you should only breathe for the person to restore fresh oxygen.

I was told never to give CPR on the bed...get the person on the floor IF you can. MJ was 112 pounds he could have easily got him on the floor unless he has back problems. What about the other person who was there he could have helped get him on the floor. And what is this with your hand behind his back-- sounds difficult besides you need both hands to do compressions.

Benjamin Phillips, perhaps that is why he was on the bed and not on the floor. In any event the police have the full confession as the article said the police interviewed Dr Murray for 3 hours Saturday. If the police and forensic doctors do not find anything suspicious why is everyone jumping the gun?

I have read inconsistencies in these reports by the journalist. This is a BIG story. With the rush to get this story to print there are bound to be some things printed on the web and elsewhere that do not add up because the police has not released Dr. Murrays confession yet as the matter is still under investigation. In this case little details may be left out that make a BIG difference in what actually happened.

I'm sure the doctor did only rescue breathing at first until his pulse subsided then CPR was administered! I'm sure paramedics did provide electrical shock, however, one you have reach maximum joles you must restart CPR if pulse and rhytm does not return! You alternate CPR & defib until the person is determine to be decease an unrevivalable by an MD!

Life insurance? Possibly. With many life policies, especially term, they don't cover suicide for the first X number of years and then after that they do. His family is probably loading up on his stuff to sell it to the highest bidder--as talented as that group is with money, even an insurance payout wouldn't last long.

The doctor says that Jackson had a pulse when he found him, and immediately began CPR. However, you aren't suppose to do chest compressions on someone who has a pulse. (from my memory when I had CPR training a couple of years ago).

Didn't realize that it is still CPR if you do rescue breathing without compressions. Thanks for informing me.

I think an important lesson from this, is maybe it can serve as a reminder for all of use to get trained in CPR and other emergency first aid - never know when you may need it.
