The Plumline:

Liberal groups allied with the White House are fuming -- mostly in private -- about some comments President Obama made yesterday attacking a provision in the climate change bill that he called "protectionist."

Obama yesterday took a whack at the part of the bill that slaps tariffs on some goods from countries that refuse limits on global warming emissions, which was inserted partly to win over Rust Belt lawmakers worried about industrial job losses. "I think we have to be very careful about sending any protectionist signals out there," Obama said.

2009: The Year Man-Made Global Warming Hysteria Was Sunk by an Iceberg

This is truly the new Dark Ages. In the year 2009 we have the most mind-blowing technologies. The activities of everyday life are made easier than in our predecessors’ day because of virtually every imaginable convenience. Yet, many on this tiny spinning ball are just as uninformed, anti-intellectual, paranoid, and blinded by false ideologies and conventional wisdom as in the days of witch burnings.

In the 21st century, we have leaders who are willfully ignorant of the inconvenient truths that face them, and who plan to uproot our daily lives and our hard-earned money in order to keep with their erroneous beliefs. I am talking about man-made global warming\ climate change.

out of the top 10 warmest years since 1850, half have been before 1961. Any dimwit with an internet connection can go on-line and get this information for themselves. But it’s so much easier as a “world citizen†to just let global warming fanatics spoonfeed lies to you while you lie back in your easy chair calling for carbon taxes from your fellow citizens.

You are incorrect. As of 2007, all of the 11 hottest years had occurred within the previous 13 years, and I have the proof:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/12/071213101419.htm

Then, 2008 tied for eight warmest, so now all of the 12 hottest years have occurred within the last 14 years.

I think Obama has it right. As Krugman says, "there’s perfectly sound economics behind border adjustments related to cap-and-trade." However, it's also true that "we have to be very careful about sending any protectionist signals." If we're doing it to get the support of rust-belt members of Congress, odds are we won't have the actual amounts and products match the economic justification.

If policy-makers in other countries think our cap-and-trade system is bogus, or if they think it's real but the tariffs go beyond what the economics justifies, or if they just don't understand the economics behind cap-and-trade border adjustments, then they may see it as political cover to enact protectionist measures for their politically powerful industries. That in turn could provoke retaliation from other countries. Even when there's good justification for the actual policy, we have to be very careful about the signals it sends.

Hm, you're probably right, but even though I know it's a bogus complaint it makes me wanna ask "what is he, President of the United States, or U.S. Ambassador to China?"

Obama is in way over his head. It is obvious he cannot handle the daily pressures and lacks the decsion making skills to make the tough calls. Will he get better? perhaps. Can we survive his on the job training period? Hopefully.

Until we get the money out of government we are going to have weak leaders. Obama is about average....somehow, the US has to figure out how to allow free speech, but exclude money, not to mention election reform....all lobby money should go into one pot and distributed equally....Obama is failing just like his predecessors...now and then we get a strong guy, but now they are CEOs...

Is there any way to blame this on Bush? C'mon, I know someone can.

I don't see why this bill matters so much. It's really dead. There won't be reconciliation and the Senate bill would have to pass by 60 votes so you can imagine that the Republicans are going to weight it down with all kinds of stones, a.k.a. off-topic amendments, so that it will sink. Plus they will filibuster. Plus the Democrats will not vote en bloc, and, final plus, they will have to give away the store for Olympia Snow or Susan Collins to come on board.
09:00 PM on 06/29/2009
And the Dems will load it up with Earmarks....

And the voters will remember in 2010, 2012 and 2014 which Senators put what dead weight onto our future, and make sure they never work in politics again.

This bill is a new playground for wall street gamblers. Carbon credits are derivatives.

What does the bill do for individuals who want to install the cheapest electricity, rooftop solar?

Nothing.

yet more proof that DLC Obama works for the Bankers.

This liberal has no problem with the bill, except it won't go far enough. Anything will help, right now. Next time vote for liberal progressives and we'll get real change , eventually. At least the Administration is recognizing the problems. That's a giant step up from the last administration and 'that' party, who still deny that our environement is in a fragile state, and that Climate Change is really happening because of manmade pollution.

The Left's prescriptions for slowing climate change are extremely costly and ineffectual.

If you really cared about the environment, you wouldn't advocate for statist solutions to the problem. Roll that up n sm0ke it.

Says the mushy middle. The liberals and the independents are crucial to Democrats winning elections, and both of these groups are becoming disenchanted and disaffected.

Well I'm a registered Independent and have been since I proudly registered to vote and this bill is nothing but a give away to corporations. Here is the CBO's budget initial cost analysis of the bill. Check out the sections for cap & trade.

http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/102xx/doc10262/hr2454.pdf

Also in that budget analysis is how the relief for only the poorest 1/5th of the nation will be distributed. Guess who's doling out those dollars? Hint: It's not the government. At the discretion of the utilities.
